Ben Steele - Starry Night Hotel

by Artistic Holdings Company

June 9, 2015, 10:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $1,220 - $1,620

Description: Ben Steele - Starry Night Hotel - Hand Signed - Canvas Edition -image Size: 43"w X 39"h. Limited Edition Of: 25 - What Do Pop Art, After Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, After Rembrandt, Neon Gas And Helper, Utah Have In Common? Artist Ben Steele. "starry Night Hotel" Embraces Them All And Expresses His Belief That Great Art And The Great Artists Are More Accessible Today Than Ever Before. Thanks To Our Online Society, The Greater The Image, The Broader The Awareness Of It Has Become. If Pop Art Lionized The Irony Of Our Commodity Driven Lifestyle And Celebrated The Imagery Of Mass Culture. Steele Creates Paintings That Are Affirmations Of “culture” Being Popular With The Masses. “the Big Picture Is Right Here, Right Before Your Eyes,” Steele Explains. “i’m Not Trying To Hide Anything Or Be Heady About It. Art That Looks Down At You Because You Can’t Understand What It Is About Is No Fun. I’m Putting Layers In So People Can Have Fun And Enjoy The Process Of Discovering Them. I Would Love It If A Collector Purchased Starry Night Hotel Because They Were Taken With The Image And Was To Only To Realize Later (spoiler Alert!) That ‘ear-ily Low Prices’ Was A Reference To Van Gogh Cutting Off His Ear.” Big Picture Also Describes The Scale Of Steele’s Images. At First Glance His Sprawling Canvases Pay Homage To His Unique Mix Of Americana And The Masters Of Past And Present, But Soon The Subtleties Of His Use Of Light (in This Case Neon, Lamplight And Sunset) Become Apparent. “my Process Is Similar To After Rembrandt’s Because I Build The Effect With Layers Of Glazing,” He Explains. “i Can Only Imagine How Much Fun After Rembrandt Would Have Had Painting Neon Lights!” Steele’s "starry Night Hotel" Is Available In Two Formats, A 29"w X 26"h Giclée Canvas And A 22"w X 20"h Giclée Paper.

PINCHUS KREMEGNE Oil Signed Russian Ukrainian

by Gilden's Arts

June 11, 2015, 5:00 PM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: PINCHUS KREMEGNE 1890-1981 Zaloudock, Lithuania 1890-1981 Switzerland (Lithuanian /Russian / French) Title: Still Life with Bouquet of Flowers Technique: Original Signed Oil Painting on Board laid on a Wooden Panel Size: 30 x 25 cm / 11.8 x 9.8 in Additional Information: This oil painting is hand signed by the artist "Kremegne" in the lower left corner. French painter who was born in Lithuania. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in Vilna from 1909 to 1910. He moved to Paris in 1912, living in Montmartre in the studio complex known as La Ruche, where he was soon joined by Chaïm Soutine and Michel Kikoïne, whom he had met at the art school in Vilna. Both he and Soutine were represented by the dealers Paul Guillaume and Léopold Zborowski and had friends in common, including Amedeo Modigliani. Although he first exhibited as a sculptor, he soon gave this up and devoted himself to painting. He developed a lyrical, partly expressionist style under the influence of Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, the paint applied with a full brush, but his work always remained gentler and more naturalistic than Soutines and without the latters frenzied distortions. His colours, which were at first sombre, later became strong and fiery. Besides figure studies and still-lifes, such as Coffee Pot and Grapes (1929; untraced), his works included a number of landscapes, mostly scenes in the south of France at Cagnes or Céret which he spent some time during the Second World War escaping from the occupied zone in France. He also visited and worked in Corsica (1924), Scandinavia (1927) and Israel. Provenance: The collection of Professor Victor Deutsch Condition: Some craquelures throughout and some painting missing at the corners and alongside the left edge of the board. The board has been laid on another board to support it.

[Extraordinary copy] Klassiek-barok-modern, Lecture by Theo van Doesburg. Antwerpen, De Sikkel/ Amst

by Zwiggelaar Auctions

June 9, 2015, 7:00 PM CET

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Estimated Price: €150 - €300

Description: [Extraordinary copy] Klassiek-barok-modern, Lecture by Theo van Doesburg. Antwerpen, De Sikkel/ Amsterdam, Em. Querido, 1920, 31, (1) p., with 17 illustrations on plates, original cover by Theo van Doesburg. Trifle foxed as usual, spine sl. tanned and with small tears. Extraordinary copy for several reasons: the name of the original owner in pen on the half title: A. Elzas Archt. 1927. Abraham Elzas was an important architect and produced the building plans for Van Doesburg's house in Meudon-Val-Fleury. On Elzas, see the online article: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gebruiker:Tekstman/Abraham_Elzas. Furthermore, this copy is remarkable for the original architecture sketch in pencil above the colophon on the final page, finished with the typical De Stijl colours in gouache and with tiny notes in pencil. This drawing is mostly likely made by Elzas, but could also have been made by Van Doesburg.

After meeting the painter Pissarro in 1883, Gauguin left the stock market and became a professional painter. Antoni Tàpies (Spanish, 1923-2012)Known for his use of unusual materials to create paintings with a wall-like appearance, Antoni Tàpies is one of the most well-known Catalan painters of his generation. Born in Barcelona, Tàpies abandoned his law studies to pursue an artistic career. Largely self-taught, his early works mimic the styles of Pablo Picasso and Vincent van Gogh. In the 1950s, his work became increasingly abstract and aligned with the growing Art Informel movement. Tàpies participated in three Venice Biennale exhibitions (1952, 1954, 1958) prior to being selected to represent Spain at the 45th Venice Biennale in 1993, during which he was presented with the Biennale’s Award for Painting.
