It´s Something You Take In Before You Focus On It Or Truly See It. Trees, Still Seemingly Barren Of Leaves, Take On A Pinkish Cast As A Million Tiny Buds Swell Towards Bloom. Rivers And Streams Run Full With The Spring Melt And Yellow Grass Gives Way To Brilliant Green. The Light Itself Seems Cast With A Warmer Glow, Even While The Nights May Still Hold The Winter´s Chill. June Carey´s "early Spring At Stony Creek" Embraces That Golden Moment When We Become Aware That The Change Of Season Is Upon Us. Life Is Renewing. This Is One Of Those Rare Images That Causes The Smells, Sounds And Feelings Of A Time And Place To Come Flooding Forth. The Whole Scene Is So Familiar And Feels So Close To Home We Are Certain We Have Been Here. Like "above Slide Ranch" Or "fall Vineyard," This Fine Art Giclee Captures The Essence Of A Single Location So Precisely That Its Allure Is Universal. Let Some Of The Light Of Spring Warm Your Walls All The Year Through.

JUNE CAREY - SUNFLOWERS OF CASTIGLION FIORENTINO

Lot 445W: JUNE CAREY - SUNFLOWERS OF CASTIGLION FIORENTINO

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $960 - $1,200

Description: June Carey - Sunflowers Of Castiglion Fiorentino - Hand Signed - Limited Edition Canvas - - Image Size: 24"w X 20"h. Limited Edition Of: 75?.tuscany, Against The Foothills Of The Apennine Mountains Sits The Small, Walled-city Of Castiglion Fiorentino. It Is In Magical Places Such As This That The Soul Of The Region Resides. It Is Here, In The Shadow Of The Ancient Stone Tower, Il Cassero, That Cultivated Fields And Old World Charm Thrive. ?on The Peaceful Flatland Of The Val Di Chio, Just Below The City, I Climbed Out Onto The Floor Of This Field Of Sunflowers,? Reminisces June Carey. They Were Tall And I Wanted To Stand Among Them, To Look Up And See The Sun Glowing Through Their Golden Crowns. I Made My Way Amongst The Giant Leathery Leaves, Trying Not To Step On Anyone?s Feet. I Was Able To See, Through The Many Flowery Faces, My Beautiful And Ancient Etruscan Village Silhouetted Against The Sky, Creating The Dramatic Background I Hoped For In This Painting. I Wondered If The Etruscans Planted Sunflowers Here. I Didn?t Linger, For I Know The Very Much Still-living Proprietor Tending These Flowers Could Have Soon Arrived To Question Me. As I Escaped Through The Mud, I Sensed A Thousand Years Of Culture Still Thrived In This Field. ?these Large Girasole Are Just Now Reaching Their Full Maturity And Are Covered With A Million Buzzing Bumble Bees. Their Heads Are Heavy With The Seeds And Have Begun To Lean Over With The Weight. The Petals Droop Gently Down Across Their Giant Smiling Faces. Too Heavy To Follow The Sun, The Flowers Simply Remain Facing East.? ?sometimes I Park Outside The Main Gate Of The City And Walk Up Into The Busy Streets To Go To My Local Post Office Or Shop For A Local Wine Or Book. There Is A Coffee Bar And Pizza Place Just Outside The Massive, Medieval Gate, Where Old Men Always Sit Playing Poker, Laughing And Talking. The Old Women Are Never With Them. They Are Inside The Village Walls Hanging Out The Clothes To Dry Above The Narrow Streets, Running Small Shops, Buying Fresh Bread For The Day And Talking Loudly To Each Other. Their Voices Echo Noisily Within The Ancient Stone Walls.? You Can Brighten Any Room With Happiness Of Fresh Flowers And The Romance Of Tuscany. "sunflowers Of Castiglion Fiorentino" Is Available As An Oversized Masterwork? Fine Art Canvas For Large Spaces And As A Moderately-sized Fine Art Canvas Edition As Well. You Might Not Have A Home In Tuscany, But With The Art Of June Carey You Can Enjoy Tuscany In Your Home!

Estimated Price: $1,820 - $2,275

Description: James Bama - Contemporary Sioux Indian - Size: 30"w X 20"h. Limited Edition Of: 75?.the Distinctive Portraits Of James Bama Have Earned Him The Respect Of Art Collectors And Critics Worldwide. The Focus Of "contemporary Sioux Indian" Is Oglala Sioux Wendy Irving, A Modern-day Indian Whose Choker Necklace, Ribbon Shirt And Braids Wrapped In Otter Skin Indicate That He Clings To The Traditions Of His People, Yet Finds Himself Caught Between Two Worlds. To Give The Painting A Contemporary Flavor Bama Placed Him Against A Peeling Wall That Warns, "no Parking, Violators Towed Away," Suggesting That The Indian Does Not Fit In The White Man's Affluent Neighborhood. "these Are Sophisticated Young Indians, Very Aware Of What Is Going On," Says Bama. "they Are Not About To Sit Back Passively And Endure Injustices. They Seem Limited In What They Can Do Other Than Become Educated And Find A Niche In The White Man's World Where Their Old Ways Have Been Accorded Little Or No Place."

JAMES C. CHRISTENSEN - THE CHESS MATCH

Lot 2142W: JAMES C. CHRISTENSEN - THE CHESS MATCH

by Artistic Holdings Company

August 2, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $5,650 - $7,062

Description: James C. Christensen - The Chess Match - Hand Signed - Extra Large Canvas Edition - Image Size: 72"w X 48"h. Limited Edition Of: 40?.there Are 1,327 Named Openings And Variations To A Match In The Oxford Companion To Chess, But How Can A Player Remember Any Of Them When The Day?s Spectators Include A Pair Of Dragons? ?actually, I Don?t Think Anyone Is Worried About Them At All,? Laughs The Artist James C Christensen. ?they Enjoy A Well Played Game. It?s The Little Guys With The Lances That Get Ornery When They Are Captured.? Welcome To "the Chess Match" As Imagined By James, The Professor Of The Imagination. ?these Characters Are Quite Passionate About The Game. You?ll Notice That They?ve Incorporated The Checkerboard Pattern Into Their Clothing And Even Onto The Castle Walls. But, They?ve Only Learned The Game As Distant Observers, Somewhat Like You Or Me Getting Fascinated Over A Rugby Match On The Aussie Channel. We Could Get All Excited, Run Into The Backyard And Form Up A Scrum But We Wouldn?t Know The Nuances Of The Game. Still, We?d Have All Sorts Of Fun And Maybe Even Lose Some Teeth In The Process. ?the Two Players Remind Me Of Oberon, In Red, And Titania, In Blue, From Shakespeare?s "midsummer Night?s Dream," Each With Their Own Castles And Followers. Instead Of Playing With The Traditional Black And White Pieces I Was Going To Tip A Hat To Alice In Wonderland By Using Red And White. From A Design Point Of View, It Was A Little Boring,? Reveals Christensen, ?so I Went With Blue Instead Of White. I Didn?t Think Much About It Until A Friend Stopped By And Pointed Out That I Happened To Choose The Colors Of Utah?s Own Holy War - The University Of Utah (red) Vs. Byu (blue).? As For The Field Of Play, It?s Classic Christensen. There Is Little Doubt That The Two Queens, One With Her Magical Staff And The Other With Her Broadsword, Are The Most Powerful Players On The Board. The Kings, Being Slightly Less So, Have Compensated For Their Diminutive Stature With Rather Tall Thrones. At This Point In The Game, The Blue King Has Opted For A Nap, While The Red King Does His Best To Direct Traffic With A Staff Not As Potent As His Queen?s. ?i Had Fun Playing The Different Pieces Off Of Each Other,? Relates James. ?knights, Castles And Kings All Employ Minions And Ogres To Move Them About The Field. The Red Bishop Is Very ?rome?, As If He Has Just Arrived, Ornate Mitre And All, From A Conference At The Vatican. His Counterpart Is A Red-haired, Crazy Druid Running Around (technically, Diagonally) With A Bunch Of Skulls On His Belt. You Have The Napoleonic, Great Garabaldi Pawn In The Foreground Very Serious And Very Fired Up For His Role While His Opposite Number Seems To Be Having Trouble Mustering Any Real Sincerity.? Then, There?s The Crowd That Surrounds The Main Event. Advisors, Apprentices And Dragons Are Part Of The Action. Like Children Mimicking Adults, A Group Of Faeries Play Their Own Version Of The Game. A Traveling Salesman, In This Case A ?pawn-broker,? Entices The Locals With His Wares. A Chip Monk Hides In The Woods Holding A Pawn. Has He Swiped It Or Is He Looking To Get In A Game? An Old, Lost King Lies Half Buried In The Ground. Seventy-eight Of His Companions, Known As The Lewis Chessmen, Were Discovered In 1831 On The Isle Of Lewis, Scotland. These Medieval Ivory Pieces Date Back To The 12th Century And Are Believed To Have Been Brought To The Scottish Islands By The Norwegians, Who Ruled Scotland At The Time. ?for Those Who Know Me Well And That Think I?ve Forgotten Something Here, I Haven?t. Hidden In The Forest Are At Least Three (maybe More) Fish Adding Their Enchantment To The Day?s Festivities. After All, It Wouldn?t Be A Christensen Without Magic In The Air. And, Oh, By The Way, It?s Red?s Move.?

Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Single Shot Rifle

Lot 623: Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Single Shot Rifle

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: serial #105072, 32 WCF, 28" half round half octagon barrel with a very good bore showing some pitting, most prominently in the throat. The metal surfaces of the no. 1 weight barrel show 80-85% thinning original blue with the loss due to silvering at the muzzle and on the edges of the flats, as well as usage marks and fine scuffs scattered across the surface. A few light impressions are visible, most notably a small ding appearing on the outside edge of the crown at the six o'clock position. The receiver shows 85% original blue now silvering at the edges and overlaid with fine usage marks as well as two or three small oxidation spots. The lever shows traces of case-hardened color on forward areas adjacent to the hinge pin, with the remaining outside surfaces showing a smooth gray surface with several spots of finely pitted oxidation. The smooth walnut buttstock and schnabel forend with ebony insert remain in near excellent condition, showing thinning original varnish with scattered impressions and usage marks across the surface. No cracks are apparent. Two small 1/2" crescent shaped chips are visible on both sides of the base of the buttstock, halfway between heel and toe. Oddly identical in appearance and location, both remain unobtrusive and do not affect the adjacent crescent steel buttplate which shows a smooth surface with traces of case-hardened color. The rifle is sighted with a blade front sight and buckhorn type rear sight. The sight elevator bears a 1901 patent date, identifying it as a replacement. Manufactured in 1887, this nice little low wall begs to be shot. (146678-34) {ANTIQUE}
