Letters from Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht to Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Chai Uziel

Lot 418: Letters from Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht to Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Chai Uziel

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Two letters of biblical discourse sent by Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht as a young man to Rabbi Ben-Zion Meir Chai Uziel, The Rishon LeZion and Chief Rabbi of Israel, and a letter from Rabbi Yechiel Michel Tukachinsky, the director of 'Etz Chaim' Yeshiva in which Rabbi Goldvicht was learning at the time, to Rabbi Uziel, about Rabbi Goldvicht's special talents. Rabbi Chaim Yaakov Goldvicht (1925-1995), the founder and first head of Yeshivat Kerem B'Yavneh. In his youth, he studied in the Talmud Torah and Yeshiva of Etz Chaim and was considered a prodigy. As a young man, he used to frequent the homes of the great rabbis of the time and was beloved to them due to his exceptional talents and knowledge. Rabbi Goldvicht also had a special relationship with Rabbi Uziel. Rabbi Uziel's letters to him were published in 'Mishpetei Uziel'. 1. A long, interesting, undated letter from Rabbi Goldvicht to Rabbi Uziel, in which he makes "a seemingly tremendous" remark about Rabbi Uziel's book Mishpetei Uziel. Rabbi Goldvicht's remark relies on the words of "our great teacher Rabbi Chaim of Brisk in his book Chidushei Rabenu Chaim HaLevi." At the end of his letter, Rabbi Goldvicht asks "to please notify me if [you have] received an answer from Rabbi Tukachinsky." (Concerning this answer, see below.) The letter was received by Rabbi Uziel on 21.11.1939, as he noted in his handwriting at the head of the page. Good condition. Filing holes and a few wrinkles. 2. A letter from 7.12.1939 "to my very precious Maran HaGaon ... may his chair bear his greatness." In this letter, Rabbi Goldvicht mentions his unanswered question from Novemeber 1939, and asks for Rabbi Uziel's answer, "since it is known that a pious man does not do things incompletely, especially our teacher. He therefore probably knows the explanation and I ask him to answer me hastily, because in my book 'Bikurei Chaim' I have spoken at length about the matter." Rabbi Uziel wrote his answer on this letter itself, which is that his many troubles have not given him the opportunity to look into the matter, but he will do so in his closest spare time. Good condition. Filing holes and a few wrinkles. 3. A letter from Rabbi Tukachinsky to Rabbi Uziel, dated 20.11.1939, about giving a grant from the 'emergency tax' funds designated for the older prodigies of 'Etz Chaim'. Rabbi Uziel had asked to add young Rabbi Goldvicht to the list of grant-awardees and Rabbi Tukachinsky answers that despite Rabbi Goldvicht's young age, the directors of the Yeshiva agreed to add him to the list, accepting Rabbi Uziel's recommendation and taking into account the "excellent talents of this young man and his great knowledge and new ideas on the Torah." Rabbi Tukachinsky emphasizes that the support "is truly little." The letter was typewritten on the official stationery of 'Etz Chaim' and hand-signed by Rabbi Tukachinsky. At the bottom of the letter, Rabbi Uziel noted in his handwriting: "Arranged! Notify whom it may concern on its content." From these letters, the great genius of Rabbi Goldvicht stands out clearly even at a young age, to the point that he was considered a truly great prodigy! Very good condition. Small tears due to filing holes.

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: A letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Mordechai Gifter to Rabbi Chaim Efraim Zeitchik. In the letter, from November 1974, Rabbi Gifter confirms that he has received the fourth volume of Rabbi Zeitchik's book 'Va'Ani Tefila' and adds that it "has brought me great pleasure, and due to the respect I feel towards him [you], I hereby attach several comments I thought of while studying the book." Rabbi Chaim Zeitchik (1906-1989) was one of the greatest Mussar Rabbis of our era. He was a student of Novardok Yeshiva and founded a Novardok yeshiva in the city of Buchach in Galicia. In 1960, he immigrated to Israel and served as the spiritual director of 'Tiferet HaCarmel' Yeshiva in Haifa. He gave Mussar lectures all around the country. After a while, he moved to Jerusalem where he founded the 'Or Chadash' Yeshiva and continued his many works in Torah and Mussar dissemination. A letter from Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, the Chazon Ish

Lot 410: A letter from Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, the Chazon Ish

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: A short letter handwritten by Rabbi Avraham Yeshayahu Karelitz, known as the Chazon Ish, to an unknown addressee, undated. The letter states: "It seems that in Jerusalem, may it be rebuilt, it will be easier to find what you want. However, since according to your letter, it is most necessary, I bless you that you should succeed. And I sign [with] peace, A.Y. [Avraham Yeshayahu]." The Chazon Ish (1879-1954) was renowned for his fantastic diligence in the Torah and as a Halakhic decisor. He anonymously published the first volume of his work 'Chazon Ish' in 1911, and was known ever since by the name of his book. After World War I, he lived in Vilna, until he moved to Israel in 1933. Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinsky, who recognized his greatness, forced him to become a Jewish leader and sent him many questions concerning the religious leadership in the Land of Israel. The Chazon Ish strengthened the renewal of the laws and customs of the Land of Israel. He wrote and published the two dozen volumes of the 'Chazon Ish', written after long and deep study and which explain almost all the passages in the Talmud. His missives and letters were gathered in the book 'A Collection of Missives - Chazon Ish'. 15 cm. About 4 lines of handwriting. Good condition. Slight tears and wrinkles.

A letter from Union of Immigrant Rabbis, signed by the director Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer

Lot 407: A letter from Union of Immigrant Rabbis, signed by the director Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: A letter from Rabbi Eliyahu Kletzkin and Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer to 'The General Committee of Knesset Yisrael' in the name of 'Hitachdut Rabbanim Olei Ha'aretz', the 'Union of Rabbis [who are] Immigrants to the Land.' This organization was founded by Rabbi Meltzer and its aim was to "support the rabbis who had immigrated to Israel and could not support themselves" and "to support the rabbis who settled in the new settlements in Israel to teach Torah and religion." In time, it broadened its activity and its name was changed to 'Union of Rabbi-Refugees of Russia and Other Countries'. The organization was active for tens of years. In the letter before us, from 21.3.1926, the two rabbis, directors of the organization, refer to a one-time support that they ask the General Committee to give to a few rabbis, members of the union, for the upcoming Passover holiday. The writers note especially Rabbi Avraham Zakheim, the author of 'Nitei Eitan', who immigrated to Israel in 1925, the son-in-law of Rabbi Hillel David HaCohen Travis, rabbinical court judge in Vilky, as needing financial help. The signature of Rabbi Meltzer and seal of Rabbi Kletzkin appear at the margins of the letter. Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer (1870-1954) was the rabbi of Slutsk and head of its yeshiva. Later he became the head of 'Etz Chaim' Yeshiva in Jerusalem and chairman of the Council of Torah Sages. He is the author of the work 'Even Ha'Ezel'. Rabbi Eliyahu Kletzkin (1852-1932) was a rabbi and Halakhic decisor, the rabbi of Lublin and many other communities. He immigrated to Israel in 1925 and settled in Jerusalem, where he served as head of 'Ohel Moshe' Yeshiva. Excellent condition. Filing holes.

Letter from Rabbi Duber HaCohen Kook to his parents and sisters - 5655 (1895)

Lot 375: Letter from Rabbi Duber HaCohen Kook to his parents and sisters - 5655 (1895)

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Long letter sent from the city of Post by Rabbi Duber HaCohen Kook to his father, Rabbi Shlomo Zalman HaCohen Kook, his mother Perla Zlateh, and his siblings. In his letter he recalls the obligation the brothers took to transfer a sum of money to their father, with the guarantor being Rabbi Duber's brother, Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook: "Before the holiday I received a letter from my brother, your son the rabbi [Rav Kook], and from my brother, the bridegroom Chaim (Rabbi Chaim HaCohen Kook)... that my brother [Rav Kook] said that he would vouch for the 300 Rubles. It was difficult for him to back off, but at that time he had no possibility of attaining a further 100 Rubles; he cannot be blamed... Although he did not inform us of his situation... I hope that by the time you receive this, I will already have the 100 Rubles from Zoimel." Rabbi Duber also questions his father on the upcoming wedding of his brother, Rabbi Chaim. He then proceeds to discuss an issue from Tractate Hulin at length. On page 4 Rabbi Duber writes (in Yiddish) to his sisters Sarah Hasya and Ruhama (Revi). Rabbi Duber HaCohen Kook (1872-1950) was a rabbi in Kruk and then in Bilistengrad. He was known as a learned Torah scholar and excellent orator, active in all public affairs and well-regarded. He continued his religious and public activities despite a Soviet ban, and was jailed. After many efforts, he was allowed to leave Russia with his family, and in March 1925 emigrated to the Land of Israel. He was named Rabbi of the city of Afula and later headed the Harry Fischel Institute in Jerusalem. His brother, mentioned in the letter, was the famous Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, who at the time of this letter was the rabbi of the small town Zoimel in Lithuania. He later became the Chief Rabbi of the Land of Israel. Good to very good condition.

Decisions made in meetings of the directors of 'Etz Chaim' Yeshiva and the Kollelim in Jerusalem, with the signatures of the Rabbis of Jerusalem and Rabbi Charlap - 1914

Lot 434: Decisions made in meetings of the directors of 'Etz Chaim' Yeshiva and the Kollelim in Jerusalem, with the signatures of the Rabbis of Jerusalem and Rabbi Charlap - 1914

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

December 9, 2014, 5:30 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: A page written on both sides containing two different documents. The documents were written during the outbreak of World War I, whose reverberations reached Jerusalem where the economic situation was most difficult. The two pages are in the handwriting of the secretary of Etz Chaim, Rabbi Yehoshua Meir Reichman, one of the leading public figures in Jerusalem. 1. Side A: A description of the decisions reached during a special meeting between the managers of 'Etz Chaim' Yeshiva and the managers of the Prushim Kolelot in Jerusalem. April 1914. The first decision is that the appointment of directors for the 'Etz Chaim' institution will be done by the managers of the Kolelot and they will choose "people suitable for this holy and honorable position, pious and truthful people". The authorities given to the directors are specified. The second decision concerns the identity of the new 'Etz Chaim' directors. The meeting chose a representative of each Kolel in Jerusalem. The names of six of them are specified, among them Rabbi Yehoshua Shlank, Rabbi Ze'ev Shachor, Rabbi David Kamin and Rabbi Yaakov Moshe Charlap - the representative of the Sovlak and Lumza Kolel, "privileging him in his absence." The meeting decided that the Minsk Kolel should choose its representative, and as regards Chabad Kolel, the participants noted that "after G-d helps us see peace among them, they will also choose an honorable representative". The third decision is that the chosen managers will be responsible for 'Etz Chaim' in its entirety, that is, both the Talmud Torah and the Yeshiva. Several of the new directors are signed on this document, including Rabbi Charlap, as well as the managers of the 'General Committee' and the heads of the Kolelim in Jerusalem: Rabbi Zalman HaCohen Rubin, Rabbi Gedalya Nachman Broder, Rabbi Zerach Epstein (head of 'Torat Chaim' Yeshiva) and more. Rabbi Ya'akov Moshe Charlap (1882-1951) was one of the leading rabbis in Jerusalem, a student of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook well-known for his piety. Served as the rabbi of 'Sha'arei Chesed' in Jerusalem and as head of 'Beit Zvul' Yeshiva and 'Merkaz Ha'Rav' Yeshiva. He was the president of Sovlak and Limza Kolel, and the author of many books on philosophy and Jewish thought. 2.
