RAYMOND GID (1905-2000). DUNCAN YOYO. 1930. 31x23 inches, 79x60 cm. Bedos & Cie, Paris.

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,500

Description: RAYMOND GID (1905-2000) DUNCAN YOYO. 1930. 31 1/4x23 3/4 inches, 79 1/2x60 1/4 cm. Bedos & Cie, Paris. Condition A-: minor repaired tears in left margin; light time-staining in margins. Duncan yo-yos hit the market in 1929 and quickly became an international sensation. Gid's design, using only two colors, encapsulates the sheer joy of the toy through three intricate characters that are not only playing with yo-yos, but are embodiments of the toy itself. Their heads, each with one large eye, resemble yo-yos, and even the letters seem to dance. A rare mixture of Art Deco and humor. Description: W. VAN ANDRINGA DE KEMPENAER (DATES UNKNOWN) RAI. 1935. 38 1/2x27 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x70 cm. Joh. Enschede en Zonen, Haarlem. Condition B+: restoration and overpainting along vertical and horizontal folds; minor abrasions in image. Japan. The RAI in Amsterdam is a massive complex of meeting halls and convention centers. Prior to 1961, when it opened in its current location, the RAI was located on Amsterdam's Ferdinand Bolstraat. The initials are taken from the Rijwiel en Automobiel Industrie, a bicycle and automobile manufacturing trade association that first opened the hall in 1893. Here, the recognizable arch of the building's entrance is visible, augmented with modern neon-like lettering (which did not appear above the building as illustrated). Kempenaer adds a glowing tail light to increase the intensity of the nighttime atmosphere. This is the larger format.

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $5,000 - $7,500

Description: UMBERTO DI LAZZARO (DATES UNKNOWN) ITALIAN AERIAL LINES. Circa 1933. 39 1/2x24 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x61 1/2 cm. I.G.A.P., Rome. Condition A-: repaired tears and minor restoration in margins. Within Europe, Italy was one of the last countries to develop their commercial aviation industry. However, by the mid 1930s Italy had progressed far beyond most of Europe, ranking only behind Germany and France in the number of passengers carried on a yearly basis. This poster seems to predate 1934, when three of Italy's largest airline companies banded together to form a single, government-owned company, Ala Littoria. "By using green lettering below the red and white biplanes, the designer flies the colors of the Italian flag in an inventive manner" (Crouse p. 17). This is the English version. Modern Poster 174, Crouse p. 17, Affiches Art Deco p. 95.

PAOLO FEDERICO GARRETTO (1903-1989). BP ETHYL. 1934. 29x44 inches, 75x112 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: PAOLO FEDERICO GARRETTO (1903-1989) BP ETHYL. 1934. 29 1/2x44 1/4 inches, 75x112 1/2 cm. Condition B+: creases and abrasions in margins and image along vertical and horizontal folds; pin holes in corners. Paper. Framed. "Garretto's modernist graphic shorthand resembles an airbrushed pictograph - an ancient painting or drawing done on a rock wall, such as a cave or a cliff, that was used to convey a specific meaning through simple pictures. In this design Garretto artfully depicts man's control of raw horsepower" (Crouse p. 92). Garretto gives McKnight Kauffer a friendly wink with this design. He plays off Kauffer's 1933 poster for the company (see Swann Modernist Poster sale #1970 lot 66), and employs many of the same elements. On a dark background, the words BP ETHYL slope in a very modernist way and the bold lettering is reinforced by sophisticated, air-brushed shadowing. Where Kauffer used a photograph of a man and a horse, Garretto employs a fluid drawing, which he executes in his elegant style. As a continuation of the campaign started by Kauffer, it is the perfect image. Crouse p. 92.

MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968). DADA 1916 - 1923 / SIDNEY JANIS. 1953. 38x25 inches, 96x63 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: MARCEL DUCHAMP (1887-1968) DADA 1916 - 1923 / SIDNEY JANIS. 1953. 38x25 inches, 96 1/2x63 1/2 cm. Condition B+ / B: fading in text; stains in bottom margin; repaired tear in right margin, through text; minor repaired tears and restored losses at edges. Mounted on Japan. "The Dada catalogue took its place among Duchamp's unique publishing events. Designed as a poster on a 25-by-38-inch sheet of thin, foldable parchment paper, it listed all 212 items and included four short essays by Arp, Tzara, Huelsenbeck and Levesque. These essays were set in blocks of contrasting type running diagonally down the sheet - a text descending a staircase. Duchamp then overprinted the whole page in a bright red-orange, announcing the exhibition with letters that recall original Dada typography. When the painstakingly produced catalogue was finally received, Duchamp has been reported, took a sheet in his hands, crushed it into a loose ball, and suggested that a trash can full of these paper balls be offered to visitors entering the vernissage. Duchamp, characteristically, did not attend the opening." (Caroll Janis, Art in America June-July, 2006). Avant Garde p. 178.
