Estimated Price: $800 - $1,200

Description: A.O. MAKSIMOV (DATES UNKNOWN) [WAR LOAN / FORWARD FOR THE MOTHERLAND!] 1916. 38 1/2x26 1/2 inches, 97 3/4x67 1/4 cm. Condition A-: restored loss in lower left edge; minor abrasions and restoration in margins and image; light staining in lower right corner. A medieval Russian knight is galloping off to battle carrying a flag bearing the Romanov coat of arms. As one of the last attempts of Tsarist Russia to raise funds for their doomed involvement in World War I, Tsar Nicholas II abdicated in March 1917. As a result, the Bolsheviks took power. Whether the Russian aristocracy rose to the occasion and contributed to this loan is unclear, but what is certain is that the loan was never paid back. In March 1918, Russia signed a peace treaty with Germany, left the war and repudiated all Allied war loans. Copies of this poster were sent to America from Russia and used (with English text banners) "in conjunction with a film to benefit the work of an American medical relief group" (Theofiles p. 143). Theofiles 194 (var).

P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN). [SALON DES CENT.] 1899. 24x19 inches, 63x48 cm.

Lot 163: P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN). [SALON DES CENT.] 1899. 24x19 inches, 63x48 cm.

by Swann Auction Galleries

August 6, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,500

Description: P.H. LOBEL (DATES UNKNOWN) [SALON DES CENT.] 1899. 24 3/4x19 inches, 63x48 1/4 cm. Condition B+ / A-: minor repaired tears and creases in margins and corners. Hand-signed by the artist in blue pencil. Lobel's entire artistic legacy consists of only a few lithographs and two prestigious posters; one for the print dealer Pierrefort, and this one, for the 31st Salon des Cent. It is a shame that he didn't create more work, as his style reflects an intimate familiarity with Toulouse-Lautrec and the precepts of the Nabis. Here, the layout, drawing quality and masterly use of lithography (using the white of the paper to create the net) all show the marks of a first rate artist. This is the version before text. Tennis p. 10, Wine Spectator pl. 60 (var), Salon des Cent p. 67 (var), Meisterplakate 275, DFP-II 542 (var), L'Affiche Tennis (39).

Lot 266: DESIGNER UNKNOWN. W.F. CODY / BUFFALO BILL. Circa 1905. 39x29 inches, 99x75 cm. Weiners Ch. Wall, Paris.

by Swann Auction Galleries

August 6, 2014, 10:30 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: DESIGNER UNKNOWN W.F. CODY / BUFFALO BILL. Circa 1905. 39 1/4x29 3/4 inches, 99 3/4x75 1/2 cm. Weiners Ch. Wall, Paris. Condition A-: repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; light staining in margins. A rare poster comprised of scenes from Cody's life, which previously appeared on two earlier Buffalo Bill posters, primarily Scenes in the Life of Col. W. F. Cody, 1895, and also three vignettes from Chief of Scouts and Guide for U.S. Army, circa 1888 (see Buffalo Bill p. 37 and p. 53). The 1895 poster, which was a horizontal format without a central bust image of Cody, features small, full-color scenes of Cody, as well as the busts of four U.S. Presidents: Grant, Arthur, Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. Appearing on this French poster is the bust of just one President, William McKinley, elected in 1897. There are also two small vignettes that do not appear on either of the earlier posters; one for Cody Day at the Omaha Exposition (which was inaugurated in 1898), and an image of Bill's first cabin. There exists an English variation of this poster, printed by the Enquirer Litho. Company in Cincinnati, dated 1899. Buffalo Bill toured France twice during his lengthy career; the first time in 1889, and the second and final time in 1905.
