CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD JACKET

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 8, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $750 - $1,000

Description: CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD JACKET Ca. 1888 California National Guard jacket, blue wool trimmed in red at the collar, sleeve ends and rear vent, with white piping on either side of the front panels and vent sides. The jacket originally bore nine buttons in front: those are lost and have been replaced with six newer brass examples. However, there remain four original California buttons on the sleeves (two each) and two larger buttons, one on each of the rear vents. The buttons bear an image of the Seal of California and the acronym: "N. G. C.", made by Waterbury Button Co. The jacket is lined in padded cotton and bears the large maker's ink stamp of major uniform manufacturer Schlamm Bros. of San Francisco. A later costumer's stamp was added near the neck line. The jacket has been heavily moth-eaten in places yet could still be displayed for historical purposes.

EARLY MANUFACTURE UNION GREATCOAT WITH CAPE

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 8, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $7,000 - $9,000

Description: EARLY MANUFACTURE UNION GREATCOAT WITH CAPE Rare, early war Union greatcoat with integral cape in excellent condition. This federal blue wool knee-length coat the five original Waterbury Button Co. U.S. buttons at front as well as the six buttons used to close the front of the cape. The sleeves terminate in 3 1/2" cuffs, and the collar bears several rows of stitched reinforcement - all with stitch patterns typically found in period garments. The original "eye" used to button-up the collar remains. The upper-left breast bears a pocket, concealed by the cape. A belt with buttons on the back of the coat allows the wearer to draw in the waist for a closer fit. The entire bottom of the coat is as always unhemmed. Within, the coat bears a thin lining about the shoulders, and the sleeves are fully lined to the wrist. The inside of the left sleeve is stamped with the maker's name: 'SMITH BROTHERS NEW YORK" Additionally, its owner stenciled his initials "J. A. M." in white letters on the inside of the back of the coat. A few stitches on the neck and one sleeve have sprung and there are scattered moth holes, though far fewer than are usually seen and largely on the cape. This coat shows genuine use, with multiple effective but crude and unprofessional repairs to small tears in the body of the garment, with the anticipated wear about the neck and sleeve ends. A very difficult garment to find, in superior condition.

(TITANIC CREW) CAPTAIN EDWARD J. SMITH

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

July 9, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: (TITANIC CREW) CAPTAIN EDWARD J. SMITH (1850 - 1912) Captain of the R.M.S. TITANIC who was lost in the sinking of the vessel. Smith was an English naval reserve officer who later entered the service of the White Star Line and quickly rose through its ranks. In 1904, Smith became the commodore of the White Star Line and was responsible for controlling its flagships. In 1912, he was the captain of the maiden voyage of the TITANIC and was last seen on the bridge of the vessel as it went down. Exceedingly rare partly-printed D.S. "Edwd J. Smith," 1p. 7 3/4" x 6", May 5, 1893, a Board of Trade "Certificate of Discharge" issued to Second Mate T. G. Raddish, a sailor who had completed his service aboard the R.M.S. BRITANNIC. The document shows that the 29 year-old crewman served in North Atlantic service from April 10 to May 5, 1893 and was discharged in Liverpool. Printed near the bottom is a certification: "I certify that the above particulars are correct and that the above named Seaman was discharged accordingly, and that the character described hereon is a true copy of the Report concerning the said Seaman." which is signed by Smith as the vessel's master, and countersigned by another official. The discharge also bears two "V.G." stamps in areas for Raddish's conduct and ability. Some toning along left edge from adhesive, otherwise fine condition. Smith joined the White Star Line in 1880 and assumed command of the BRITANNIC, a post he held until May of 1893 when he left to briefly command the ADRIATIC. Signed as the future TITANIC captain was a rising star among the fleet's officers.

God creating the stars, - historiated initial on a leaf from an illuminated Hymnal, in Latin

by Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

July 8, 2015, 10:00 AM BST

Mayfair, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £1,000 - £1,500

Description: historiated initial on a leaf from an illuminated Hymnal, in Latin, on parchment [northern Netherlands (perhaps Haarlem), mid-fifteenth century] Single leaf, with large initial C (opening the hymn Conditor alme syderum … typically sung at Vespers during Advent) in blue with scalloping white penwork, set on burnished gold grounds with large oval notches at corners, enclosing God the father as a bearded and haloed figure in red robes standing in a stylised grassy landscape pointing up at five gold stars (illustrating the text Creator of the stars at night … ), fine sprays of angular burgundy and muted green and blue acanthus leaves with single line foliage leading to golden buds and flowerheads in same colours as before in upper and lower margins, these joined by a single decorated bar of compartments of blue, gold and burgundy in the inner border, simple initials in red or blue, red rubrics, capitals touched in red, 15 lines in a strong and formal bookhand on obverse with mixed text and music on a 4-line red stave, small marks at corners of reverse from previous mounting, slight oxidising and flaking to face of saint, else good condition, 342mm. by 215mm. The exaggerated white penwork of the initial, the multi-coloured text bar and angular acanthus leaves in muted colours point towards the northern Netherlands. The shape of the initial and its grounds are near-identical to those in a copy of Dirc van Delft, Den Boeck Vanden Kersten Ghelove , dated 1455 (Brussels, Bibl. Royale, MS.21974, see Manuscrit à Peintures di XVe Siècle , 1987, no.21), and the radiating straight single line foliage is very close to the takkenbossen motif as employed by the Master of the Haarlem Bible (see J. Marrow, The Golden Age of Dutch Manuscript Painting , 1990, pp.234-5), and this leaf was probably also produced by him or a member of his workshop.

Lamport and Holt Ltd.

by Deutsche Wertpapierauktionen

July 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Wolfenbüttel, Germany

Estimated Price: €20 - €50

Description: 160 cumulative 6 % pref. shares à 1 £ 7.11.1912 (Capital 1 Mio. £.).Eindrucksvolle Stahlstich-Vignette eines die Wellen durchpflügenden Übersee-Dampfers.Randeinrisse. VF #936.
