Benchmade William and Mary Style Walnut Tavern Dining Table, Pennsylvania

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: BENCHMADE WILLIAM AND MARY STYLE WALNUT TAVERN TABLE, 20th Century Item # 508JHU02 Entirely handcrafted using inordinately thick and heavy solid walnut planks, this fine benchmade dining table is a perfect representation of the strong and stoic William and Mary style that is so quickly attributed to Pennsylvania during the first half of the 18th Century. It is a piece built to last the test of time, the breadboard ends affixed with thick wooden pegs, permanently locking the tenons into the rabbet of the breadboard. The same joinery is used throughout the frame, making the structure permanent and mostly impervious to time and wear. It remains in excellent condition with only the lightest use indicators and blemishes. Two drawers in the front of the table slide out to reveal a hidden box behind each, this crafted like a candle box with a chamfered lid that slides in and out along rabbet grooves in the frame. Both the drawers and the boxes are hand dovetailed with appropriate poplar secondary woods, each crafted in the Pennsylvania manner. The table rests over beautifully turned and etched legs and terminates on oversized ball feet, the whole structure locked together with an H-form stretcher with a dovetailed medial bar. An unreal amount of time and material expense went into crafting this piece and the result is very impressive. This is truly tomorrow's antique, a piece that will be cherished and enjoyed as it lives on for future generations. Measurements: 59 1/2" W x 35" D x 34 1/4" HCondition Report: Shrink cracks along the grain in the top. Light scuffing to the corners of the top. Screws absent from the cleats (not pictured), allowing the top to simply be lifted from the frame - this is easily remedied by simply inserting screws, but leaving screws out allows the table to be moved easily. Light color loss and typical scratches from use.

Condition Report: Due to image limitations clients should visit our gallery website (www.sillafineantiques.com) prior to purchase to review all item images. Verbal condition reports are also available by calling (717) 658-8274 Monday through Friday 9a-5:30p or by emailing sales@sillafineantiques.com

In fine condition. William Partridge Burpee was born in Rockland, Maine on April 13, 1846 to Nathaniel A. and Mary Partridge Burpee. As a young man he was educated in Rockland schools and in the Kents Hill Academy in Readfield, Maine. He exhibited a great deal of interest as a youth in painting and drawing, and received his formal training from the marine painter, William Bradford (1823-1894) – probably in the late 1870s. Burpee’s early work of the 1880s reflects Bradford’s influence as well as other painters such as Fitz Hugh Lane, Frederic Edwin Church, Martin Johnson Heade, F. A. Silva and A. T. Bricher.

English William IV Mahogany Antique Writing Table or Desk c. 1830

by Silla Fine Antiques

Ships From: Shippensburg, PA US

Description: ENGLISH WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY LEATHER TOP WRITING DESK, Circa 1830 w/ Ebonized Highlights Item # 509HTW18Z A remarkably striking piece, this fine English William IV writing desk has survived in simply stunning condition. Entirely original with only the most minor of restorations to surfaces and structure, this particularly noteworthy in light of the fragile lyre-leg design. Only two blocks have been added inside of these legs for strength, the structure otherwise untouched. The top features a black gilt-tooled leather writing surface with only minor wear edged by mahogany with large turrets at each corner, these over barrel-spools of alternating mahogany and ebonized highlights. The conforming frame hosts two very deep drawers on one side and faux drawer facades on the other side, allowing the writing desk to be viewed from all angles with equal beauty and poise. The drawers are of the finest quality of craftsmanship, the precise and perfect dovetails and pins carved from thin mahogany planks, the dense pine drawer bottom only lightly chamfered on the edges and set into the sides. The very light elements of the drawer are strengthened by the quarter round molding applied on the right and left interior edges of the drawer, a practice typical through much of the 19th century in London. Both drawers and faux drawer fronts retain original and highly detailed stamped brass pulls. Lyre-form legs with three flutes of brass raise the desk carcass, these of perfect balance between the curve of the lyre and the sabre of the leg, all outward facing angles elegantly reeded. Ebony borders highlight the sides of the lyre and base with applied scroll rosettes on each terminal of the opposing S-scrolls that make up the lyre. An incredibly complicated turned stretcher locks both legs together, this with bold and tasteful ring turnings, the largest of which are ebonized for effect. This is a piece that was crafted with utmost attention to detail - the quality of structure is evident in the underside, where each corner is joined with dovetail and open tongue-in-groove joints and through tenoned vertical members. It is most effective and is clearly executed by an orderly and decisive hand. For the serious collector and connoisseur of fine English furnishings, this is a classical form that has clearly been cherished and cared for - it is a form that has remained incredibly tasteful for nearly two-hundred years, all that while remaining preserved in nearly total originality.Measurements: 32 1/2" D x 50 1/8" W x 30 1/4" H; 23 7/8" H to underside of frame Condition Report: Minor blemishes to later leather top including surface scratches, discoloration and minor abrasions. Old patching to turret tops. Wax filling in ebony border around faux drawers. Back edge of one drawer bottom replaced. Original under leg brackets with mostly replaced screws, a few original screws remaining. Most screws in structure are replaced. Added blocks inside lyre legs for strength. Old splice repair to one foot. No key. Remnants of very early finish preserved under wax with later refinishing; overall gorgeous color and patination. Overall excellent condition.
