Ludwig Bemelmans. Yolanda and the Thief

Lot 358: Ludwig Bemelmans. Yolanda and the Thief

by Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles

April 19, 2014

Los Angeles, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: Ludwig Bemelmans. Yolanda and the Thief. Gouache on paper and wood, 1945. Image size: 24 1/4 x 20 1/2", matted and framed to 33 x 29" Bemelmans extended the design of the piece onto an ornate frame. It is signed/ dated in black on the frame's white-wood inset: at left, "'45" and at right, "Bemelmans." Frame has a few dings; a few nail holes on outside edges of frame where an extra frame was formerly attached do not show when the painting is hanging. This piece was perhaps an initial design for a poster for the film "Yolanda and the Thief." A unique original painting by Madeline's beloved creator who, like so many others, gave Hollywood a whirl - briefly. Working with MGM's fabled Arthur Freed unit, Bemelmans' whimsical story for the film, starring Fred Astair and directed by Vicente Minelli, should have been a hit, but wasn't. Instead, it become a cult classic, involving con men on the lam, a fictional Latin American country, guardian angels, and a well-swindled fortune falling prey to love. In addition to writing the screenplay for the 1945 fantasy/musical/romance, Bemelmans also gave designing the poster a try. This is his attempt and although it never was used for the poster, it is as enchanting as any Bemelmans. Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.

Lot 4: LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949). DIRECT CHINA COTTON IMPORTERS. Circa 1910. 32x23 inches, 82x59 cm. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich.

by Swann Auction Galleries

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: LUDWIG HOHLWEIN (1874-1949) DIRECT CHINA COTTON IMPORTERS. Circa 1910. 32 1/2x23 1/4 inches, 82 1/2x59 cm. G. Schuh & Cie., Munich. Condition A-: minor abrasions in image; restoration and repaired tears at edges; overpainting in margins. This image is in many ways the sister poster to Hohlwein's better-known and better-referenced image for Marco Polo Tee. Both images are made using the same composition; a central figure against a black background, surrounded by three green squares. Here, one of the squares contains the text of the poster. Hohlwein often used depictions of the local population to promote products from Asia, Africa or South America. With this image, he proves that his draughtsmanship is so deft that by merely changing the central figure he can re-employ an existing layout and color scheme without fear of being boring or repetitive. This is one of two images he created for the New Hampshire-based company. Hohlwein / Munich p. 162.

by Swann Auction Galleries

April 24, 2014, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: ALFRED RUNGE (DATES UNKNOWN) & EDUARD SCOTLAND (DATES UNKNOWN) ERSTER PREIS / KAFFEE HAG. 1915. 35 1/2x23 1/2 inches, 90 1/4x59 3/4 cm. Kempedruck, Bremen, Condition B+: restoration in upper left corner; discoloration along top and right edges; minor abrasions and creases in image. Runge and Scotland are virtually unknown except for this poster and one other they designed a few years earlier for the same product. At first glance, with its use of light and shadow without any outlining, this poster appears to be the work of Ludwig Hohlwein (who also designed a poster for the company in 1913, which featured a tennis player drinking coffee). What decaffeinated coffee has to do with playing tennis is as obscure as the actual position this player finds himself in, and yet the image itself is one of the finer, early tennis posters. Serious tennis connoisseurs will appreciate the "convex heart racket: a model which will disappear after the 1920's" (Tennis p. 40). Tennis p. 40.

Estimated Price: $1,200 - $1,800

Description: FRANZ PAUL GLASS (1886-1964) AUSSTELLUNG MUNCHEN / DAS BAYERISCHE HANDWERK. 1927. 48 1/4x36 1/2 inches, 122 1/2x97 3/4 cm. Gebr. Obpacher A.G., Munich. Condition B+: losses, tears and repaired tears in margins, some affecting image; creases in margins and image; foxing in image. Paper. Glass, who studied at the Decorative Arts Museum in his native Munich, opened up his own studio in 1910 and shortly thereafter joined up with five other Munich-based graphic designers (Fritz Huebner, Carl Moos, Walenty Zietara, Emil Preetorius, and Maz Schwarzer). "Die Sechs" was a group of talented poster designers who worked for the same printer. They hoped that by joining together they could compete with Ludwig Hohlwein for Munich clients. Here, in a refined and bold style, Glass promotes an exhibition of Bavarian hand-craftsmanship. The hand, which contains the Bavarian colors and lion, as well as small vignettes of craftsmen at work, stands out starkly against the poster's yellow background, and the typography is well-arranged at the bottom of the image. Rademacher / Masters p. 118, Deutsche Plakat p. 247, Kunst 168.

Lot 150: Grosshandlung Johann Friedrich Klett / Eisengiesserei und Maschinenfabrik Klett & Comp.

by HWPH Historisches Wertpapierhaus AG

April 26, 2014, 11:00 AM CET

Wuerzburg, Germany

Estimated Price: €5,000 - €13,000

September 1817 in Nürnberg geboren. April 1884 in Aschau. Countries:DeutschlandRegion:Deutschland

Die Gesellschaft war die erste Aktiengesellschaft Niederbayerns!Franz and Wilhelm Steigerwald founded the Royally Bavarian Privilleged Glassworks Theresienthal in 1836. The manufactory gots transferred into a public corporation one year later. It was the first one in Lower Bavaria. After bankruptcy in 1843, the Nuremberg Bank and, in 1857, the Royal Bavarian Bank took over the glassworks. Michael von Poschinger bought the works in 1861 and married Henriette (the daughter of Wilhelm Steigerwald) in 1863. Michael von Poschinger released a quick recovery of the glassworks. King Ludwig II built his famous castles and palaces and order a lot of glass from Theresienthal from 1869 to 1886. During the epoch of art nouveau, many distinguished artists worked for Theresienthal, for example Hans Christiansen. The works recovered tremendously after the Word War II. Egon von Poschinger (son of Michael von Poschinger) sold his stocks to Max Gangkoffer and to the Hutschenreuther AG in 1973, which completely took over Thereseintahl in 1982. Theresiental produced non-industrial luxury glass. Hutschenreuther had to sell Theresienthal in 2000. The manufacturing was ceased from 2001 to 2004. Then the foundations Eberhard-von-Kuenheim Stiftung, Stiftung der BMW AG and further sponsors helped Theresienthal to start the manufacturing again. In 2006, a family living in the region took over the work, which is named Kristallglasmanufaktur Theresienthal GmbH today.

Countries:Russland, EstlandRegion:Europa

Jardim Zoologico e d'Acclimacao em Portugal (Zoo Lissabon)

Lot 1114: Jardim Zoologico e d'Acclimacao em Portugal (Zoo Lissabon)

by HWPH Historisches Wertpapierhaus AG

April 28, 2014, 2:00 PM CET

Zorneding, Germany

Estimated Price: €60 - €100

Description: Lisbon, 18 April 1904, Share of 20$000 Reis, Segunda Serie, #720, 36 x 32.5 cm, black, white, horizontal fold, stamp cancelled at the back, border with animals of the zoo.Lissabon, 18.04.1904, Aktie über 20$000 Reis, Segunda Serie, #720, 36 x 32,5 cm, schwarz, weiß, Knickfalte quer, rückseitig stempelentwertet, Randbordüre mit den Tieren aus dem Zoo.Zoos came late to southern Europe. In 1883, a group of interested citizens of Lisbon organized the founding of the first zoo on the Iberian Peninsula, gaining the enthusiastic support of King Luis. The principal founder's were Peter van der Lan, a well-known optician and scientist from Holland, and Dr. Sousa Marins, a medical doctor from Lisbon. They formed a company, the Jardim Zoologico e d'Acc1imação em Portugal, and raised the necessary capital by selling shares. The king and his father Don Fernando bought sizable holdings, and became honorary presidents of the company. Building was completed in 1884, and the zoo opened for the public in the same year, in the first of its three locations: the São Sebastião da Pedreira Park, on the edge of the city. The opening ceremonies, in the presence of the royal family, were a great success, as was the zoo itself. However, the novelty wore off and the financial situation deteriorated. By 1893 the zoo could no longer pay the rent for the property. It moved to the Palhava Park, but this did not improve the financial situation. A capital increase created by the issuing of new shares was not sufficient to stop the zoo's decline. The poor condition of the zoo and the decreasing number of animals was paralleled by the dwindling clientele. An opportunity for revival came in 1904, when the zoo moved to its present location, the Quinta das Laranjeiras. This site was larger than the previous one and allowed more opportunities. Further sales of shares subsidized this improvement and the number of visitors rose again. The city of Lisbon gave financial support, and the zoo's future seemed secure. In 1962, the company bought further land to house its growing collections. The city decided to withdraw its support in the 1970's, and by the late 1980's the zoo was bankrupt. The early 1990's brought new support as well as a necessary renovation program, which improved conditions for the animals. It now compares well with other European zoos. At some point the original company was dissolved, and a new company, the Jardim Zoologico e de Acc1imação em Portugal, S.A., was formed to acquire the zoo. Jahrhunderts, entworfen.Countries:PortugalRegion:Europa

Description: Collection of 71 letters and cards (in large part signed) Germany, 1 October 1939 - 8 February 1954 Erich Heckel (1883-1970) - German painter and graphic artist of expressionism and a founding member of the artist group 'Brücke' Extensive collection of letters to his friend Ottmar Hollmann 60 single sheets, overall 101 written pages and additional cards Letter including a small pen and ink sketch In fine condition This extensive collection of letters by the artist include 45 autographic letters with signature, two autographic unsigned letters, a letter from an unknown hand with autographed signatures, seven autographic postcards with signature, an autographic manuscript as well as 14 hand labeled envelopes and a telegram. All letters are directed to Heckel's friend Ottmar Hollmann (born 1915), who as a captain in the Air Force fell prisoner in Canada in the beginning of war (some letters carry the Canadian censor stamp). The postwar letters went mostly to Dusseldorf. The early letters often contain news of common friends who are probably called only with shortcuts due to political considerations: 'Si', 'Be', 'Kü', 'Tue', etc.; some of the abbreviations can be broken down from later letters, so 'Kü' is the publisher Küpper, 'Di' is likely the archaeologist Dietrich von Bothmer, 'Be' his brother Bernhard von Bothmer (Egyptologist). Ernst Morwitz, over whom Heckel came in contact with the George-circle, appears as 'EM'. Heckel was forbidden to paint since 1937, in the course of 'degenerate art' 729 of his works were confiscated and removed from German museums. In 1939 he had to experience how many of his works were destroyed during the public burning of books on 20.03.1939 in the yard of Berlin's main fire station. He is careful not to speak about artistic or political problems in his letters. The postwar letters give more insight into the artistic work of Heckel, in particular technical aspects, also teaching at the Karlsruhe academy, particularly since Hollmann taught himself in arts and submitted samples of his work to his friend for a critical review. Some letters are about twelve paintings Heckel created before the war that he finally received back from the U.S. after a long time. The letters are dated from 1 October 1939 to 8 February 1954 and also provided with locality (Berlin, Baden bei Wien, Hemmenhofen, Karlsruhe, Kampen, Sils-Maria and without location). A hand written postcard from Siddi Heckel to Hollmann as well as an autographic letter to the often mentioned girlfriend Hollmann's, the artist Paraskewe of Bereskine, are also included. The collection includes various formats from postcard size to Folio and is in fine overall condition with minor marginal blemishes and occasional crease marks. Some letters were perforated unclean. Erich Heckel (1883-1970) Erich Heckel was born 1883 in Döbeln and studied architecture before he dedicated himself to the Fine Arts. In 1905 Heckel founded with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, and Fritz Bleyl (who quit in 1907) in Dresden, the 'Brücke' - a group of expressionist artists. Later the group was joined by Max Pechstein, Emil Nolde and Otto Mueller.
