January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €6,400 - €8,000

Description: Oil on canvas Germany, circa 1850 Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker (1820-1900) - German history painter Signed 'C. Becker' (hardly legible) lower right in the balustrade (partly retraced)Verso inscribed presumably later 'Carl Ludwig Becker Berlin'Dimensions: 120.5 x 125 cm Highly detailed scene in cheerful colors by the Berlin artist; Becker's works of a similar format fetch up to €12-15,000The present painting by the German painter Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker depicts a view onto a balcony with a colorful figural scene. In the center a young man is proposing to a beautiful Italian woman in a violet dress. The couple is surrounded by further figures, presumably young woman's sisters. On the right, an elderly woman is peeking from behind a curtain and curiously watching the scenario unfolding in front of her. In the background one can discern the palace facades of a Venetian street. The various textures of the garments, flowers and stonework are rendered with great skill, partly accentuated with impasto brushwork. The bold, fresh colors give the composition a cheerful liveliness and underline the festive atmosphere. The painting is signed 'C. Becker' lower right in the balustrade next to the lady's purple robe (partly retraced). It is inscribed on the verso 'Carl Ludwig Becker Berlin' presumably later. The work is overall in good condition with fresh colors. There are numerous retouchings, e.g. to the neck and décolleté of the central figure as well as partly to the faces, clothes and the background. The edges are little rubbed. The stretcher frame measures 120.5 x 125 cm.Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker (1820-1900)Carl Ludwig Friedrich Becker was born in Berlin in 1820. Between 1837 and 1840 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and afterwards continued his education as a pupil of the German painter August von Kloeber. In 1843 Becker was awarded with a grant, which enabled him go to Paris in 1843 and to Rome from 1844 until 1847. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, After, Pair of Cantilever, 1927

Lot 104: Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, After, Pair of Cantilever, 1927

by Auctionata

January 19, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €560 - €700

Description: Tubular steel, painted black, blue cord yarn known as 'Eisengarn' Germany, 1927 Manufacturer: unknown Czechoslovak manufacturer from the 1930s Tubular steel of smaller diameter than the original design Height: 81 cm, 48 x 60 cm Very good condition Cantilever after the model 'MR10' by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, an everlasting timeless design classicThis pair of cantilevers were made in the 1930s by an unknown Czechoslovak manufacturer. They correspond, with minimal differences, to the cantilever model 'MR10', designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe in 1927. After the chair was exhibited on the Werkbund exhibition within the Stuttgart Weißenhof-project, the idea was picked up by countless manufacturers and eventually produced in slight modifications. The two chairs presented here are characterized by a slightly smaller diameter of the tubular steel. Also unusual is the black finish of the tubular steel, which suits the blue fabric covering. The chairs are 81 cm high, 48 cm wide and 60 cm deep. They are in very good, original condition with signs of age and wear. The fabric covering presumably renewed.Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969)The German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe was born in Aachen. While studying he worked for Bruno Paul and Peter Behrens. His first architectural works were yet conventional but step by step he found his own way which meant reduction and focus on the essentials. These are the groundbreaking ideas which led to his most famous architectures, the Weißenhof-Siedlung and the Barcelona pavillon. His use of the steel skeleton and the iron glass contruction is important for modern architecture until now. (afa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

A young lady, her back facing the viewer, is playing the piano while an elderly man accompanies her on the cello. Another man holding up a dead hare stands in the background. The composition in subdued colors shows a fine and detailed execution typical of the artist's work. In the Graphic Collection of the Schloss Wilhelmshöhe there are several sketches and preparatory drawings for this painting, in which Ruhl conceived the composition and the individual figures (inv. nos. 3096, 3302, 3300, 3304, 3294, 3303, 3290, 3070) Remains of the monogram 'RL' and the dating '36' can be found on the right of the depiction. The painting is in good condition. There are some retouchings, mainly in the left area. A crack in the wood plate running over the entire height of the image has been professionally restored. The frame shows some losses. The framed work measures 71.5 x 67.5 cm, the panel measures 51 x 46.5 cm. Ludwig Sigismund Ruhl (1794-1887) Ludwig Sigismund Ruhl received his first drawing lessons from his father, the sculptor Johann Christian Ruhl and as a young man attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Kassel where he met the painter Ludwig Emil Grimm. Ruhl studied aesthetics and art history in Göttingen and later at the Dresden Academy where he made the acquaintance of Arthur Schopenhauer, whom he portrayed in 1815. He attended the Art Academy in Munich, starting a friendship with the landscape painter Karl Philipp Fohr, followed by a sojourn in Rome. Here he was inspired by the Renaissance masters and painted in the style of the Nazarene school, depicting primarily religious motives. Eventually he returned to his hometown Kassel in 1818. He traveled to Hanau, Frankfurt and Berlin. During this time he created drawings, paintings, primarily with allegorical and historical subjects, and illustrations to Shakespeare's dramas. In 1832 Ruhl took a professorship at the Academy before being appointed director of the museum in Kassel and later the Academy. During the 1840s Ruhl mainly depicted mythological motifs. In his later creative period Ruhl returned to drawing and created several design for ceramics. (tfa) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Description: Brandholz / Stuttgart, Namens-Anteil 1 Anteil Febr. 1933 (R 8).Lochentwertet (RB).Rückseitig ein Übertragungsvermerk. VF #1212.

Black contour lines, deformed body parts and mask-like faces determine the two figures. Drissi was keen to capture all emotional facets of human existence in all its poignancy. He lined up in an art historical tradition that had broken ground with the works of the German Expressionists. The painting is signed with 'Drissi' in Arabic and script lower right. It is in good condition, showing some soiling to the paint surface and wear affecting the frame. The overall dimensions are 60 x 42 cm, and the hardboard measures 58.2 x 40.5 cm.Mohamed Drissi (1946-2003)Mohamed Drissi was born in the Moroccan city of Tétouan in 1946 and is considered one of the most original painters of his generation. He studied art in Tétouan, Paris, Barcelona, Brussels and New York. His favorite subject was the 'human being' and especially the taboo topic of prostitution. In this context, Drissi painted a colorful variety of abstract-expressive paintings of mostly androgynous women's bodies and mask-like heads. However, the faces of Drissi's figures reflect the full range of human emotions, which are enhanced by the postures and gestures. The expressive power in Drissi's works is reminiscent of the great German Expressionists such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Otto Mueller. The works of Egon Schiele and Edward Munch are also brought to mind.Drissi's works fetch record prices at international auctions. As a sculptor he was always interested in the use of unusual materials such as iron, lead foil and parts of scrap with which he built his impressive figures and animals. The present sculpture is work after César and consists of bronze. The work corresponds to the formal language of the artist and suggests that its model was made of screws, winds and pieces of scrap. The sculpture is in very good condition with minimal traces of use. The figure was welded on a round base. It measures c. 100 cm in height and the diameter of the base is 37 cm. César, in fact César Baldaccini (1921-1998)César, whose full name César Baldaccini is hardly known, was born in Marseille. He began his artistic training at the age of 14 years, when attending the École des Beaux-Arts at his city of birth. In 1943 he moved to Paris, where he deepened his studies at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He finally graduated as a student of Marcel Gimond (1894-1961) in 1947. In these years, he already met artists like Picasso and Giacometti, whose anti-academic attitude deeply influenced his later artistic development. In the 1950s, César started to work with scrap and industrial waste. In 1960, he joined the movement of Nouveau Réalisme and experienced his international breakthrough with his metal works, which he called 'Compressions dirigées'. His later sculptures were inspired by Pop Art and Appropriation Art. César characterized a constant urge to extend the existing techniques in sculpture. Works of the renowned sculptor are represented in numerous international museums, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz. His works are based on music and color that were identified as central aspects of his artistic approach. The present work is titled 'SÜD-ÖSTLICHER DIWAN' (South-eastern divan) and surprisingly shows a blue female nude in a reclining and quite frivolous pose. A second blue figure is depicted in the upper left corner and seems to render the abstract colorful background a certain spatial depth. The composition is characterized by broad, energetic and slightly primed strokes that remind of dynamic sounds of an exhilarating musical play. The painting signed and dated lower right 'Ernst Wille 77'. It is additionally inscribed on verso 'Ernst Wille geb. 26.9.16'. It is in very good condition with minimal traces of wear. The stretcher is framed with simple studio slats, measuring 91.5 x 91 cm.Ernst Wille (1916-2005)Ernst Wille received his artistic training at the 'Werkschule' in Cologne as well as at the Art Academy in Munich. Here, he became a student of Karl Caspar (1879-1956), Hans Gött (1883-1974) and Adolf Schinnerer (1876-1949). His works particularly included drafts for frescoes, sgraffiti and mosaics. Besides, Wille also worked with metal. Various study trips lead led him to France and Holland. His works may be found, for instance, at the city hall in Cologne, the 'Neue Galerie - Sammlung Ludwig' in Aachen and at the 'Volkshochschule' in Cologne. Description: Multiple, serigraph in colors on cotton (printed tablecloth)Switzerland, presumably 1990sDaniel Spoerri (born 1930) - Swiss artist, dancer and director of Romanian origin; one of the most important exponents of the object art and founder of the 'Eat Art'Signed in felt tip pen 'Daniel Spoerri', inscribed 'ea' and numbered '8/49' lower rightDimensions: 189 x 130 cmIn excellent condition Rare and signed copy of Daniel Spoerri's famous 'Tableau Piège' in the form of a tableclothObject is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.One of the pioneers of the 'Eat Art', Daniel Spoerri (born 1930) is best known for his use of food in his artworks. The topic of food as the 'mother of all art' is a recurring subject in the artist's oeuvre. In his three-dimensional 'panel paintings' or 'Tableau Piège', including dishes and leftovers, 'real still lifes' so to speak, Spoerri moved away from the traditional painting on canvas. In doing so, he gained international attention. With the present work, published as a multiple, Spoerri has returned to the two-dimensionality. The fact that 'the food' is printed on a tablecloth, testifies to the well-known humorous component in Spoerri's artistic oeuvre. The tablecloth is signed in felt tip pen 'Daniel Spoerri', inscribed 'ea' and numbered '8/49' lower right. The work is in excellent condition. The dimensions are 189 x 130 cm.Daniel Spoerri (born 1930) Born in Romania, Daniel Spoerri emigrated with his mother, a Swiss citizen, to Switzerland in 1942. In Zurich and later in Paris, he studied classical dance and pantomime. In the 1950s, Spoerri worked as an assistant director to Gustav Rudolf Sellner at the State Theatre in Darmstadt. In 1959, he moved to Paris and met Jean Tinguely, Arman, Yves Klein and Francois Dufrêne. He founded the 'Edition MAT' and published his first multiples. In addition, he produced his first objects, especially the famous 'Tableaux Pièges' (Fallenbilder). In 1960, Spoerri co-founded the group 'New Realism'. In 1968, he established the 'Eat-Art Edition' and opened a restaurant in Düsseldorf, which existed until 1972. There, he performed with Joseph Beuys, Ben Vautier and Dieter Roth and other major artists. From 1978 to 1982, Spoerri taught 'Three-dimensional Design' at the Cologne Werkschulen, and from 1983 to 1989 he was a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In 2009, he opened the restaurant 'Eat Art' and the exhibition center 'Ab Art' in Hadersdorf am Kamp. Spoerri's works are on display in many important museum collections, including the Tate Britain, the MoMA, the Museum Ludwig Cologne, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the MUMOK in Vienna. Description: Acrylic on paper Switzerland, 1976 Luciano Castelli (b. 1951) - Swiss artist Signed and dated with pencil on verso 'Luciano Castelli 1976' as well as titled 'Lucianos Arsch'Provenance: Private collection, Zurich; Collection Deyhle Dimensions: 103.5 x 68 cmGood conditionCastelli belonged to the group of the 'Neuen Wilden' active in Germany and Austria in the 1980s; his large, mostly erotically connoted works on paper fetch up to €30,000 at international auctionsObject is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.In the 1970s, Luciano Castelli generated the first triumphs of his artistic activity. During that time he discovered his fondness for monumental depictions of nudes, testifying an explicit erotic and often expressive character. The present work is a typical example of these 'wild' compositions and shows a back view of a female nude dressed with erotic lingerie. The unsuspicious character of the pink background obviously contrasts to the momentous title of the work. The work is signed and dated with pencil on verso 'Luciano Castelli 1976' as well as titled 'Lucianos Arsch' (Lucianos Ass). It is mounted onto white cardboard and appears in good condition; there are tiny pin holes in the corners and the lower left corner is slightly creased. The sheet dimensions are 103.5 x 68 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 124 x 89 cm. Luciano Castelli (b. 1951)Luciano Castelli was born in Lucerne in 1951, where he studied under Max von Moos at the School of Applied Arts, between 1968 and 1969. A three year apprenticeship as a graphic designer followed. In 1972 he took part in the documenta V in Kassel. In the following year he moved to Austria where he produced his first self-portraits. In 1974 he took part in the famous exhibition 'Transformer - Aspects of Travesty' held at the Kunstmuseum Lucerne in Switzerland. After a stay in Rome the artist moved to Berlin in 1978 where he made the acquaintance of the artists Rainer Fetting and Salomé. Together they opened the Galerie am Moritzplatz organized as a self-help gallery. Castelli founded a punk rock band 'Geile Tiere' ('Horny Animals') together with Salomé and shot the movie 'Rooms full of mirrors' with Rainer Fetting in 1982. The following year, the three artists held a performance at the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The artists were by this point well established as the 'Neuen Wilden'. In 1984 Castelli shot the movie 'Venice by night' with Knut Hoffmeister and was awarded the Normann Prize in Lucerne. His works are part of numerous private and public collections, such as the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection in New York or the Maison Eurpéenne de la Photographie in Paris. Today, Luciano Castelli lives and works in Zurich. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Using simple tools and materials West created a functional object, which blurs the boundaries between design, art and commodity. The chains are draped to form a round foot and then rise to end in a single-light fixture, the cable is simply pulled through the chain links and barely visible. The versatile Austrian artist created chairs and lamps by alienating everyday objects and often adding an ironic touch. The 'Privat-Lampe des Künstlers II' plays on the contradiction of the heavy metal and its seemingly floating state. The lamp is in good condition. There are slight traces of oxidation. The height, without fixture, measure 179 cm. The lamp has a single-light fixture and is fully functional. No guarantee on functionality.Franz West (1947-2012)Franz West was born in Vienna 1947.
