by Louis J. Dianni, LLC

August 9, 2014, 12:00 PM EST

Fishkill, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $300 - $500

Description: Title: N/AVolumes: 1Publisher: N/ADate: 1869Binding: Leather and adhesive, brown morocco.Page decoration: CrewelworkSignature: NoneNumber of pages: 60Provenance: New Hampshire EstateSize: 9.0x7.0"Weight: 8.6ozCondition: The binding has come loose, making the pages delicately attached to the spine. There is rubbing and bumping along the edges of the cover and many pages have become ragged at the ends.History: Crewel embroidery was, in the past, embroidered to create elaborate and expensive bed hangings and curtains. Now it is most often used to decorate cushions, curtains, clothing and wall hangings. Recently several other items such as Lamp Shades, Handbags, have been added to ever growing list of crewel home furnishings. A Tambour Work technique is also used for creating chain stitched rugs, and is sometimes referred to as crewel work.Unlike canvas work, crewel embroidery requires the use of an embroidery hoop or frame on which the material is stretched taut and secured prior to stitching. This ensures an even amount of tension in the stitches, so that designs do not become distorted. Although nowadays, crewel and free embroidery is generally executed with a small portable hoop, early embroidery was executed on large free standing frames. Such free standing frames were common parlor furniture in most homes. The rectangular canvas mount could tilt and pivot over so that the needleworker could also access the back of the canvas with ease. This book contains a variety of patterns along with the instructions for how to create them, all in French. At the beginning of the book is a gold engraved plate of school girls having a snowball fight.

by Louis J. Dianni, LLC

August 10, 2014, 12:00 PM EST

Fishkill, NY, USA

Description: Bowie knifeMaterial: SteelConstruction: ForgedMarks: SW Silver & Co CornhillFeatures: An unmarked Joseph Rodgers & Sons, 15" blade bowie knife having a clip point, hand checkered grip and German silver cross guard. A fine leather covered wood scabbard also has German silver mounts and push button release of blued spring steel. Finely crafted and in near mint condition. Nearly identical examples are to be found with both Rodgers and Silver's markings. These dually marked pieces employed the identical features of this knife. Both Rodgers and Silver maintained offices in New York and courted the American trade. This knife with 15" blade would rank among the largest and best condition knife for the period.Period: c. 1880Blade Size: 15" L x 1.75" WOverall Size: 20" L x 3.25" WWeight: 3 poundsCondition: Fine condition with some scuffs to leather. Small nick on blade near point approximately 1/8". Some light discoloration to steel.History: Joseph Rodgers and Sons in the mid 19th century had no equal for quality cutlery and numerous Stephen Winkworth Silver & Co appear to have started life in 1838 as Clothiers with premises in London and Liverpool. Four years later they expanded with an outlet at Bishopsgate, London and increased the size of their Liverpool premises. They also opened workshops at Commercial Road East, London. It is probable that around this date they started to concentrate on supplying clothing and furniture for the traveller. As they were already forging strong connections in the East through supplying the military and emigrants, they were ideally placed to import India rubber as a business alongside their clothing and furniture. The European discovery of the qualities of Gutta Percha in this year were also to have a dramatic effect on S.W. Silver's business. In the London Illustrated News of July 29, 1848 they described their 'Emmigration Outfitting being exclusively at No. 4 Bishoshopsgate Within' while 'Naval and Military Officers, Midshipmen, Cadets, Civilians, Ladies, &c. are outfitted as heretofore at the Cabin-Passenger Outfitting Warehouse, Nos. 66 and 67, Cornhill, London and St. George's Crescent, Liverpool'. They capitalised on the need for immigration to Australia and New Zealand and the discovery of Australian gold in 1851 must have further increased their business. They boasted that they had a 'representative in every Australian Colony, to whom they ship Clothing monthly' and as they had 'a large interest to maintain in those Colonies' that they could supply 'a comfortable Outfit, including Bedding, for Male or Female Emigrants from Four Pounds (net) upwards or less (Two Pounds if needful)' to make emigrating easier. In 1861 Silver advertised in the London Commercial Directory that they could supply 'Furniture for Camp, Barrack, Cabin, and Colonial Use, embracing every variety of Cabinet Work, Canteens, Trunks, Portmanteaus etc'. Their cabinet making is good quality and they cast their flush brass campaign handles with their details, as illustrated. We are fortunate in that they marked most of their goods with their details, a fact that they had pleasure in pointing out was necessary in an advert in The Daily News in 1856. SW Silver chests typically have these flush handles to the sides of their chest to allow for lifting, a detail not known of other makers. Most campaign chests from the mid 19th century onwards tended to have packing case cupboards which would prohibit the use of any other type of handle. Aside from marking the handles, they also fixed pressed brass plates with their details to their furniture. They were the only English furniture company to participate in the New Zealand Exhibition in 1865, a fact not unnoticed by the judges who wrote in their Reports and Awards 'The suitability of some exhibits of furniture, where lightness, portability, and convenience are required, is particularly noticeable in some chairs, which, although fit for luxuriantly furnished apartments in point of appearance, can yet be folded and removed with all the readiness of a camp stool'. By 1875 the company had an 'Explorer's Room' at their Cornhill premises. They had also expanded to take in 4 Sun Court, Cornhill where they had an 'office of the Colonies'. SW Silver produced waterproofed clothing alongside their other requisites for travellers. This expanded to using rubber in making insulating wire and cable with the company so successful that in 1852 they took the step to move north across the Thames to Woolwich Reach. Their factory became so large (covering about 15 acres) and employed so many local people (approximately 2,800) that the area became known as Silvertown. Twelve years later Charles Hancock sold his Gutta Percha Company to SW Silver and the factory was renamed the India Rubber, Gutta Percha, and Telegraph Works & Co. Ltd. By 1900 they had branches in Liverpool, Bradford, Birmingham, Sheffield, Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Glasgow, Belfast and Dublin. As well as the works at Silvertown there was also a factory in France at Persan-Beaumont.It was probably the addition of Hancock, with his strong knowledge of Gutta Percha that led SW Silver into the sports market. Although they are known to have made tennis and squash balls, they're chiefly known for their golf balls. They started the production of golf balls under the brand name Silvertown in 1888. To start the balls were given a number to identify them, such as the Silvertown No. 4. Later, names such as the Silvertown Snippet, Silviator, Sovereign, Stoughton, Granton and Lynx were used. Perhaps their most recognizable balls are the Silver King range produced from about 1910.The exact nature of SW Silver's relationship with Benjamin Edgington is not known. They were both important businesses in their own right. Perhaps it was simply an alliance with a view to an amalgamation that never happened. In their joint advertising one took prominence over the other dependent on the goods illustrated. If it was a tent it would be Edgington and his address would be used, if furniture then SW Silver with their address. Their adverts do suggest however that they issued a joint catalogue. They marketed their businesses extensively together with regular adverts in The Geographical Journal and numerous testimonies as to their reputations in guide and travel books. Sadly, when exactly this relationship ended is not known but they were still advertising together in 1927. The India Rubber, Gutta Percha, and Telegraph Works & Co. Ltd., which operated as a separate business to SW Silver, was sold to the British Goodrich Rubber Company in 1933. In 1967 Benjamin Edgington Ltd. were involved in a takeover by Thomas Black and Sons (Greenock) Ltd. Blacks shops can still be seen on the High Street in England.

The company was started in 1919 when the circus created by James Anthony Bailey and P. T. Barnum was merged with the Ringling Brothers Circus. The Ringling brothers purchased the Barnum & Bailey Circus in 1907, but ran the circuses separately until they were finally merged in 1919. In 1957 John Ringling North changed the circus from using their own portable tents to using venues, such as sports stadiums that had the seating already in place. In 1967 Irvin Feld bought the circus, but in 1971 he sold it to Mattel. He bought it back in 1982.

Already at a young age Avalokiteshvara has resolved to support all living creatures and to help them to salvation. He swore an oath never to ease his efforts otherwise he should shatter into a thousand pieces. According to legend he then ranged the world. As he paused to look at his work, he noticed that the suffering of the people did not diminish. This moment let him doubt, so that he broke into a thousand pieces. Immediately countless Buddhas came to him to put him together again. But this time they gave him a thousand arms and eleven heads, so that he could better fulfill his vow.
