TRAIN ACCIDENT LETTERS

Lot 996: TRAIN ACCIDENT LETTERS

by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

February 11, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $100 - $150

Description: TRAIN ACCIDENT LETTERS Fine pair of antebellum letters by the Brewson sisters of Atlanta concerning the death of a family friend, John Natt, killed in a train derailment caused by human error. The letters, dated Jan. 24 and Feb. 26, 1859, read in part: "...painful news of the death of Mr. John Natt. He was killed on the Winchester and Alabama Rail Road, the cars ran off the Bridge and upset down the embankment, there were five hurt and one killed Natt. He lived about two hours. He never spoke after he was mangled…we are told. His jaw bone was broken and a contusion on the back of his head. It occurred on the 18th of this month…break the news as gently as you can to his bereaved child and aunt…John's body is laid in a vault in Nashville and placed in a metallic case thinking that you would like to have him removed....the cars was thrown off by a piece of timber which had been used by some of the train hands as a scotch and which had been left on the track. He was buried by the masonic fraternity. We have not found out yet what disposition has been made of his property…". Very good.

Estimated Price: $280 - $360

Description: Bob Coronato - "head Five Miles That Way,... Then Go Five Miles That - Hand Signed - Canvas - Edition Image Size: 17"w X 8"h. Limited Edition Of: 75 - "head Five Miles That Way,...and Then Go Five Miles That Way,... ?bring Back Every Critter Ya Find!" ?i Was Part Of A Brand Crew In North East Wyoming And South East Montana Around The Turn Of This Century. We Were Gathering 10,000 Acres At A Time, On A Ranch That Covered Several Counties And Two States. As We Headed Out That Morning Towards The Montana Bad Lands, The Boss Told Us To Head Out Five Miles That Way . . . Etc. I Was Wondering How We Were Supposed To Know When We Reached Five Miles? After All, My Roots Are Back East Where 100 Acres Is A Big Farm. ?nevertheless We Gathered Up Everything We Found And Headed Them Back To The Portable Corals Set Up Near The Camp. We Had A Chuck Wagon, Ranch Bedroll Wagon, A Remuda Of Horses And We Slept In Wall Tents On The Prairie. We Moved Camp About Every Other Day, Covering 20 Some Miles Between Camps. As I Recall We Branded 300 Cows A Day For About Two Weeks. ?the Country We Were Working Was So Rough, Yet Beautiful And Vast. It Really Impressed Me As To The Scale Of The Workplace Where We Were Going To Spend The Days Ahead, Gathering The Cow Calves For Branding. From Ridge Montana (population About 15) Up To Rocky Point And Lightning Flats, I Have The Greatest Memories Of Some Of The Roughest Countryside. The West Really Lives On In This Small Hideout Of Our Country.?

Estimated Price: $18,000 - $24,000

Description: The rarity of this work cannot be overstated. Though Ogden Pleissner created dozens of depictions of duck hunting and upland bird hunting, this is believed to be the first big game scene to ever come to auction. Back by the tent and fire, the deer or elk hunters have just returned or are preparing to head out in search of their quarry.Ogden Minton Pleissner was born in Brooklyn, New York, and studied figure painting and portraiture with Frank DuMond and Frederick J. Boston at the Art Students League of New York. Despite growing up in the city, Pleissner was attracted to the outdoors and as a teen he visited dude ranches in Wyoming, where he sketched from life. In later years, Pleissner and his first wife Mary were regular guests at the C-M Ranch in Dubois, Wyoming.Pleissner wanted to be classified as a landscape painter first, who also loved to hunt and fish. During World War II, Pleissner painted for the United States Air Force and "Life" magazine. During his years in the service, he primarily completed watercolors as the portability and immediacy of that medium accommodated working in the field.Pleissner's work is included in more than thirty public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and hangs in the offices of the Pentagon, West Point, and the Air Force Academy. While Pleissner's subjects range from the landscapes of Europe to salmon fishing in Quebec, his style is informed by the classical traditions. He is quoted as saying, "A fine painting is not just the subject . . . It is the feeling conveyed of form, bulk, space, dimensionality, and sensitivity. The mood of the picture, that is most important."
