BOB CORONATO -

Lot 563W: BOB CORONATO - "HEAD FIVE MILES THAT WAY,... THEN GO FIVE MILES THAT

by Artistic Holdings Company

April 19, 2014, 5:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $308 - $410

Description: Bob Coronato - "head Five Miles That Way,... Then Go Five Miles That - Hand Signed - Canvas - Edition Image Size: 17"w X 8"h. Limited Edition Of: 75 - "head Five Miles That Way,...and Then Go Five Miles That Way,... ?bring Back Every Critter Ya Find!" ?i Was Part Of A Brand Crew In North East Wyoming And South East Montana Around The Turn Of This Century. We Were Gathering 10,000 Acres At A Time, On A Ranch That Covered Several Counties And Two States. As We Headed Out That Morning Towards The Montana Bad Lands, The Boss Told Us To Head Out Five Miles That Way . . . Etc. I Was Wondering How We Were Supposed To Know When We Reached Five Miles? After All, My Roots Are Back East Where 100 Acres Is A Big Farm. ?nevertheless We Gathered Up Everything We Found And Headed Them Back To The Portable Corals Set Up Near The Camp. We Had A Chuck Wagon, Ranch Bedroll Wagon, A Remuda Of Horses And We Slept In Wall Tents On The Prairie. We Moved Camp About Every Other Day, Covering 20 Some Miles Between Camps. As I Recall We Branded 300 Cows A Day For About Two Weeks. ?the Country We Were Working Was So Rough, Yet Beautiful And Vast. It Really Impressed Me As To The Scale Of The Workplace Where We Were Going To Spend The Days Ahead, Gathering The Cow Calves For Branding. From Ridge Montana (population About 15) Up To Rocky Point And Lightning Flats, I Have The Greatest Memories Of Some Of The Roughest Countryside. The West Really Lives On In This Small Hideout Of Our Country.???about The Artist - Bob Coronato Biography ?we Are At A Clash Of Two Different Times: The Traditional ?cowboy?n? Ways Are Being Overridden By The Modern, Quicker Technologies. This Is The Focus Of My Paintings,? Coronato Says. ?i Try To Document Moments In Time That Show The Ways Of A Fading Lifestyle That So Many People Have Admired.? The Subjects Of Coronato's Work Remind People That There Is Still A Remote, Free West. The Question The Artist Is Asked Most Often Is, ?do They Really Do That?? Coronato Reflects, ?yes, They Do - But Not For Much Longer. The ?west? Is Alive, It?s Just Hiding In Small Corners Of Our Country, Trying To Desperately Hang On And Not Be Forgotten.? Coronato Lives Half The Year In Remote, Eastern Wyoming And Half The Year In Southern California. Upon Graduating From Otis/parsons Art School, He Moved To Wyoming To Pursue A Career As A Cowboy Artist. His Work Has Been Shown At The High Plains Museum, The Coeur D'alene Art Auction And In 1995 Won Best Of Show As The Pendleton Round Up Art Show.

Description: AN UNUSUAL AND HISTORICALLY INTERESTING EARLY-MID 19TH-CENTURY FRAUNHOFER-TYPE TELESCOPE FROM DOLLOND the 2in. objective lens with flared ebony cuff, brass cap engraved externally Dollond and internally Purchased by John West, Opticians of Fleet Street at the last Sale of Dollonds effects of Ludgate Hill, mahogany tube with stand connector and fine-focus wheel, the eyepiece set within ebony cuff. Closed length -- 39.5in. (100.4cm.). Wooden storage box The last family member to own Dollond was William Dollond (1834-1893) who succeeded to the business on the death of his father, George, in 1866. Although comparatively young, by 1871 he was too ill to continue and sold the business to his former employee J.R. Chant who promptly held an auction at the long-established 59 St. Paul's Churchyard address lasting several days from the 8th August 1871. An advert placed in The Times on the 27th July by Winstanley & Horwood lists a vast range of scientific instrument types, including ..a large variety of astronomical, marine and portable telescopes.. of which the present lot would appear to be one example. John West Opticians are recorded in the London trade directory as trading from 92-93 Fleet Street, about 7 minutes' walk from Dollond's premises. ++Optics in good order if a little dusty; tube had several (four-five) long cracks running along the grain, these are closed. Focus wheel only operates when extending the eyepiece; no stand; box associated.

Desirable World War I Mauser Tankgewehr Bolt Action Anti-Tank Rifle

Lot 3510: Desirable World War I Mauser Tankgewehr Bolt Action Anti-Tank Rifle

by Rock Island Auction Company

May 4, 2014, 9:00 AM ChST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Description: Desirable World War I Mauser Tankgewehr Bolt Action Anti-Tank RifleManufactured by the Germans in 1917 and 1918 in response to Allied tank assaults. The Mauser Tankgewehr 18, or "Elefant-Buechse" was the first dedicated man-portable anti-tank weapon. Weighing in at 37 pounds, the T-Gewehr was capable of penetrating the armor of the day and could disable an enemy vehicle in 6-10 shots. A historically important weapon, the T-Gewehr gave birth to the anti-tank rifle and was the grandfather of the modern anti-material rifle. Blade front and tangent rear sights, with matching numbers on the barrel, receiver, bolt components, bolt catch, barrel band, trigger guard and stock, the Mauser banner over "1918" on the receiver ring, and a smooth two-piece pistol grip stock.Manufacturer: MauserModel: Anti-TankBBL: 39 inch roundStock: walnutGauge: 13 mmFinish: blueGrips: Serial Number: 1886

Condition Report: Fine. The rifle retains 40% of the original blue finish, showing a mixed brown patina with scattered spotting overall. Traces of green paint are present on the receiver, possibly the remains of a field-expedient camouflage application. The stock is good with some mild chipping and dings. A slight bend is visible in the rear sight, otherwise the rifle is mechanically very good. A significant milestone in small arms development and forerunner to a class of weapons that affect the battlefield to this very day.

by Bibliopathos

Estimated Price: €5,000 - €6,000

Description: FIRST ALDINE EDITION OF CATULLUS POEMSCATULLUS, GAIUS VALERIUS. Carmina. Venetiis in aedibus Aldi, mense Ianuario MDII. [Venice: Aldo Manuzio 1502].8vo, 19th century amateur blue morocco, gilt anchor on both covers, six raised bands spine with gilt title, gilt decoration at compartments, inner gilt dentelles, ff. [152]. Aldine anchor at title-page.First Aldine edition and one of the first libri portatiles, the handy octavo size books that Aldus popularized. «In their dedications to Marino Sanudo (1466-1536) Aldus and Avanzi emphasize that their Catullus is new. "Moreover, our Catullus will please you", writes Aldus, "because he will not at all the same as he did before, because of many emendations and verses both added and restored to their original position". After ten years of collating manuscripts and printed editions -and attempting to solve the puzzle of Catullan metrics- Avanzi produced a much-improved text. The growing interest in Catullus at the turn of the century, coupled with the popularity and portability of Aldus' octavo format, made Avanzi's text of Catullus the definitive text of the early sixteenth-century. «The novelty of the Aldine consists not only in its text, which is far superior to that of any previous edition and contains many changes even from Avanzi's 'Emendationes', but also in the physical aspect of the book, for Aldus' handy octavo, with its almost unprecedented press run of 3,000 copies, made Catullus far more widely available than he had been in the unwieldy tomes of the fifteenth-century» (Gaisser, Catullus and His Renaissance Readers, p. 52 ff.). Estimated Price: €45,000 - €65,000

Description: An important heavy and very fine German precision pocket watch with 8 day-movement driven by two barrels and two chains/fusée - This watch was mentioned in the Deutsche Uhrmacherzeitung (German Watch Paper) in 1935, edition 49 Case: outer case - brass/gilt, tortoiseshell. Inner case - 18k gold, tiered, polished, case maker punch mark "PHMI", signed movement protection cap. Dial: enamel, Arabic numerals, central date, finely ornamented gold hands. Movm.: full plate movement, keywind, frosted, gilt, signed, 2 barrels / 2 chains / 1 fusee, solid pillars, cylinder escapement, three-arm steel balance, slim balance cock, engraved regulator scale, chatoned diamond endstone on balance. Seyffert no. 71 This important watch is remarkable in more than one respect. There is of course its excellentcondition; but even more interesting is the fact that the watch is driven by two barrels and two chains/fusée. We have only seen this design in on other clock - the portable precision pendulum clock no. 2 by Johann Heinrich Seyffert dating to 1801. Reinhard Meis describes the clock in his book "100 Jahre Uhrenindustrie in Glashütte von 1845-1945" on page 30 et seqq. and believes the second barrel to be a later addition. However, his assumption is refuted by the fact that Seyffert had already produced this watch with its identical driving mechanism a year earlier. It is more than likely that he used the pocket watch as a model for his famous portable pendulum clock. Johann Heinrich Seyffert (1751-1817) Seyffert was the most eminent Saxon watchmaker of his time, even though he probably never passed his master's examination. In 1801 Seyffert became inspector of the Mathematical-PhysicalSalon. He is considered the "secret and unappointed" watchmaker to King Frederick Augustus I, who also protected Seyffert from the Dresden clockmakers company that wanted to bar him from carrying on his craft because of his missing apprentice certificates. Seyffert sold most of his watches to the royal family, scientists and explorers. One of his customers was Alexander von Humboldt, who bought an important pocket chronometer of exceptional accuracy for his expeditions. Source: "A. Lange & Söhne" by Reinhard Meis, Munich 1997, pp.18. Provenance: German collection from the 1920's and 1930's. Cond.: Case: very good. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, capable of running.

Dial: silver, engraved flower and foliate scrolls; applied brass chapter ring with hour knobs, Arabic minutes, radial Roman hours and Arabic 24 hours. A rotating disc with pointer for the moon age in the centre, on top a rotating disc with round aperture for the indication of the moon phase and a fixed and engraved sun pointer for the sunrise; single iron hand. Movm.: square brass movement, firegilt, monogrammed, engraved and pierced floral appliques, chain/fusee for going train, 3 barrels for hour strike and quarter hour strike, baluster-shaped movement pillars, 3 hammers, control dial for quarter hour strike, locking plate, hog's bristle, verge escapement, two-arm steel balance, finely florally engraved and pierced balance bridge. Ulrich Schniep (died in 1588) German clock and sundial maker Schniep was born in Wiesensteig near Ulm; we know nothing of his childhood and apprenticeship. Schniep came to Munich in 1545 and was given citizenship in 1554. He began working for Duke Albrecht V and his successor Wilhelm V awarded Schniep the position of clockmaker to the court. The first volume of "Wissenschaftliche Instrumente in ihrer Zeit" (scientific instruments in their time) quotes Zinner as saying that Schniep supposedly built an instrument for Emperor Maximilian II in 1566, but nothing else isknown about it. Schniep's portable sundials are very obviously influenced by those created by Christoph Schissler, and many of his sundials have survived the time. Schniep's son Alexius was also a clockmaker - the collection of the Beyer watch museum in Zurich holds a powder flask by Alexius that has an inbuilt sundial. Source: http://watch-wiki.org/index.php?title=Schniep,_Ulrich_%28gest._1588%29, as of 03/20/2014 Lit.: "Meister der Uhrmacherkunst" (masters of watchmaking) by Juergen Abeler, 2nd edition, Wuppertal 2010, p. 651. Cond.: Case: very good, slightly worn. Dial: very good. Movm.: very good, alterations, capable of running, cleaning recommended.
