A Parisian ormolu mounted mahogany époque Louis XVI guéridon.

by Lempertz

May 15, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €20,000 - €25,000

Description: A Parisian ormolu mounted mahogany époque Louis XVI guéridon. A small, round decorative table with one drawer to the apron.Martin Carlin, who is considered one of the most important cabinetmakers of the ancien regime, was probably born in Freiburg im Breisgau in around 1730. Nothing is known of his apprenticeship in Paris. He married the sister of Jean-François Oeben on 26th February 1759, thus forming family ties to one of the other great ebonists of his time. He registered as a master on 30th July 1766. Most of his furniture was sold by the marchands-mercier Simon-Philippe Poirier and Dominique Daguerre. His pieces were generally light, portable items such as gueridons, small ladies desks, sewing tables and music stands, which he often had decorated with Sèvres porcelain plaques.Carlin's style changed dramatically around 1775 when Japanese lacquer furniture came into fashion. His pieces were typically decorated with opulent gilt bronzes which he purchased from selected dealers. Nam June Paik, Ginsberg, 1989

by Lempertz

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €40,000 - €60,000

Description: Signed and dated 'PAIK '89'. The present work shows the diversity of Nam June Paik's artistic expression. Within various mediums he combines the abstracted depiction of a television screen with real integrated television sets and a stylised portrait. The underlying theme is the so-called 'white noise'. The term indicates, amongst others, the condition of the television set which has no signal and shows just black and white interference. With the painterly depiction of small printed symbols on the canvas, such as stars, aeroplanes or faces, Paik is imitating this 'white noise' which is simultaneously made visible by the openings in the canvas onto the three 'Watchman' screens. 'Watchman' was a trade name for a small portable television set from Sony. First produced in 1982, it was frequently used by Paik for installations and multiples. Applied metal pieces in the shape of television sets frame the openings in the canvas giving the impression of the eyes and mouth of a stylised face. Together with a nose, represented by a perforated sheet screwed to the centre, and the rough strokes of acrylic paint for hair and beard, a stylised portrait manifests itself, representing the title figure, Allen Ginsberg. Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) was a US American Beat Generation poet, whose friends included Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs, and who created a scandal with his poem 'Howl', published in 1956. One joint work with Paik includes the television project 'Good Morning, Mr. Orwell' from 1984. 97 x 101.7 cm Acrylic over colour silkscreen on canvas, collaged with metal elements and 3 watchman, electric cable 97 x 101.7 cm 1989

Leonhard Miller, Nuremberg, 56 mm x 92 x 12 mm, dated 1609

by Auktionen Dr. Crott

May 16, 2015, 5:00 PM CET

Frankurt, Germany

Estimated Price: €7,000 - €10,000

Description: An extremely rare portable folding ivory equatorial sundial A round horizontal dial on an ivory baseplate with hour division encloses an inset compass with a brass-set glass cover. A lid connected by four hinges has an inner vertical dial, also with hour division. The gnomon is a piece of string spanning between the two plates; different pole heights can be set by feeding the string through one of three holes in the lid. Above the vertical dial horizontal lines with the signs of the zodiac are inscribed "Quantitas Diei" and indicate the respective length of the days; the needle-shaped gnomon above is part of this arrangement. Below the round horizontal dial two more dials are engraved in the ivory: one shows the Italian hours, another the Babylonian hours. Signature of the maker: "Lienhard Miler 1609". The cover of the sundialsshows on the outside a sixteen-part compass rose with the sun in the middle; the compass rose is framed by leaves, branches and fruit. The outside of the baseplate shows - again framed by branches, leaves and flowers - a circular conversion table for moon and sun hours with the moon age on the outer ring and an inner ring with double 12 hour scale. In the centre an originally gilded revolving brass disc with a pointer has a circular scale with a double 12 hour scale around a quarter moon and several stars. The baseplate has a small compartment on the left side that can be covered with a small brass lid - probably intended for keeping spare parts such as pieces of string. The lid and the baseplate each have four ornamental studs on the outside. Lienhard Miler was born before 1580 and died after 1652. He usually signed his work in the way we see on this sundial - with his master?s mark, aheraldic lily and added the year the piece was created; from the many signed pieces we can assume that he was active from 1602 to 1651. Cond.: Case: very good, worn, hairlines.

An inlaid Bohemian Eger cabinet.

by Lempertz

May 15, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €26,000 - €30,000

Description: An inlaid Bohemian Eger cabinet. A deux corps, the cabinet resting on a table with two drawers. The doors decorated with relief marquetry depictions of a king approaching a besieged city and Sylvia and Coridon, the drawers with Diana and Actaeon and a landscape. The sides with depictions of an ancient warrior (possibly Mars). The interior containing 11 drawers surrounding a central compartment flanked by pillars. This type of cabinet with multiple doors developed in the 16th century when humanist scholars began to amass collections of rare and valuable objects. These collections, which were to become the curiosity cabinets of the Renaissance, required new forms of furniture. These pieces were designed to allow their aristocratic owners to transport their collections and to display them in an appropriately representative manner to visitors and friends. Thus, the portable, multiple drawered cabinet was born. The complicated closing mechanisms, secret compartments and intricate décor of such pieces often set high demands on the cabinetmaker's art. The demand for such pieces in the 17th century grew even further after the presentation of the so-called pommerschen kunstschrank. Objets de vertu became status symbols and collecting became a fashion. The Eger cabinets with relief inlays became an easily recognisable type and were produced in a similar form for a period of over 100 years. They were mainly produced by the Eck, Fischer and Haberstumpf families, who perfected and developed this technique in their workshops over generations. It was Adam Eck who revived this inlay technique, which was already recorded in use in Northern Italy in the 15th century, and popularised it in the early 17th century. H 148, W 66.2, D 42.4 cm. Last quarter 17th C., the table later.

Condition Report: The varnish redone, minor losses, shrinkage cracks.

500BC to 500AD Iron Age. Irish stone head.

by Whyte's

May 9, 2015, 1:00 PM GMT

Dublin, Ireland

Estimated Price: €3,000 - €5,000

Description: 500BC to 500AD Iron Age. Irish stone head. Granite, angled break at the base along one side. Height: 255mm; width: 120mm; depth: 170mm; weight: 8.78kg. Irregular, upright stone with flat base. The surface has rough overall texture, apart from the detail of the head/face and a tapered raised feature at the front, directly below the head. The back of the stone is curved. The outline of the head is smooth, projecting at an upward angle from the body of the stone. h:10  w:4.70 d:6.70 in. Provenance: From a 300 year old house, Claregalway, Co. Galway. Other Notes: The academic Etienne Rynne, in considering the corpus of carved stone heads in Ireland in 1972, noted that the dating of these objects was 'extremely difficult', as features of pagan heads are paralleled in heads from the medieval period. Carved stone heads from the Iron Age in general are distinguished by simplicity in terms of the execution of the facial composition. In this instance, the work comprises nearly circular, slightly bulging eyes, broad nose and wide slit mouth with minimal definition of the lips. The only other area of the stone to be skilfully fashioned is in regard to a subtle, tapering 'throat' outlined below the front of the head. No attempt was made to define the ears or to include the hairline, or to detail the hair in any way. The simplified finish of the object suggests that the head could date from the Iron Age, although with an isolated find of this nature, it is never absolutely certain that it is of prehistoric origin. Medieval stone heads, of which there are numerous examples in Ireland, in general were designed to project from a wall, like corbels, or in doorway arches. This stone head, with its flat base and upward tilting face, does not appear to have been designed to fit into a wall in that way, but seems intended to function more as a portable item, like a bust. The wide mouth can be compared to a stone figure on a large stele from Holzgerlingen, Wurttemberg, dated to c. 380 BC. A wide mouth is a feature of a head from the sanctuary of Roquepertuse near Aix-en-Province, dated to the fourth century BC. The combination of circular eyes and broad nose has affinities with pre-Christian stone carvings kept at Armagh Cathedral. These include a carved head and a complete figure that were interpreted by Helen Lanigan Wood in an article in 2000 as sun god representations. A face carved into a stone block at Camlyball, near Newtownhamilton, Co. Armagh, was given round eyes, contrasting with the lentoid eye forms that typify many instances of prehistoric stone heads. A sandstone head from a fourth-century Roman shrine at Caerwent, Monmouthshire (Newport Museum and Art Gallery), considered on stylistic grounds to be a non-Roman artefact, also has the rounder eye delineation adopted in this stone head. The stone head comprises a flattish oval facial composition on a squat, roughly worked pedestal. The work has the economical, not to say not primitive, quality that points to an Iron Age origin for the piece. The essence of the features is expressed by carefully picking out circular, bulging eyes, a broad nose and a wide slit mouth. The curiously raised aspect of the head is a unique and intriguing touch.
