Other Notes: Walter Elmer Schofield (1867-1944) trained first at the Pennsylvania Academy (1889-1892), and the Academie Julien in Paris in 1892, after which he remained on the Continent for most of the next three years before his marriage in 1897. From 1903, Cornwall's coastal and rural scenes featured strongly in his work although he made regular trips to the Continent to paint and maintained his connection with the United States throughout his life, making the crossing almost every year in peacetime by steamer to the USA from England between 1902 and 1938. With a rigorous painting style, his early works consisted of subtle, muted colours, but during his career his colour palette became bolder and more vibrant. Seen as a key figure in a group of painters identified as the Pennsylvania Impressionists, Schofield received significant recognition from such bodies as the Carnegie Institute, Pennsylvania, and is remembered as one of the pioneers of American landscape painting.

The painting was examined at Cheffins Auction House, Cambridge, while the painting was off the wall and access to the reverse was possible. The painting is executed in oil on a linen canvas support of medium weight and weave. The painting is unlined and appears to be attached to the original wooden stretcher, all keys are present and unsecured. The
painting measures 616 x 768mm. There are minor undulations in the canvas along the upper edge. At each corner there is a
small tack hole surrounded by a circular indentation in the paint. This is likely to be the positioning of cork spacers while the paint layer was still wet and was used to ensure that nothing lent against the surface of the work while the paint dried. It is likely that this was done by the artist himself. A horizontal, vertical brushstroke near the centre of the work
has small areas of loss in the impasto, although this area appears stable and the flaking does not appear to be an ongoing issue. The paint layer is in a good condition overall. There is a varnish layer which is uneven and has yellowed slightly. The painting is framed in a gilt compo frame which is in good condition.
