The beautiful oil painting shows a country idyll in the evening light. Two cows are trotting leisurely along the street towards the farmhouse in the back. Four whit geese are picking on the riverside right next to were the cows are walking. Behind a stone bridge leading across the river, stands the old farmhouse quietly. Its dark roof can hardly be recognized in front of the wood behind it. Only one window is highlighted from inside by the red shine of the hearth, suggesting that the farmers are home. The born Norwegian Sophus Jacobsen lived in Düsseldorf, Germany, since 1853 where he was the pupil of Hans Fredrik Gude. He specialized in landscape painting. His paintings are very sought after today and can be found in many international collections.
The painting is in optical very good appearance, yet shows some restored areas and the canvas has been relined. The total size including the frame is 79 x 113,5 cm, the size of the canvas is 70 x 105 cm. The painting boasts an old paper label on the backside attributing it to Sophus Jacobsen.
