Lot 516: REAL COMPANIA DE SAN FERNANDO DE SEVILLAPlatinum House
October 12, 2013
Deinze, BelgiumLive Auction
Description: ANDALUCIA. SEVILLA. Accion. black. No 3769. The Sevilla shares are the finest of the superb 18th century trading company shares of Spain. The company was formed in 1747, with rights to trade with all of Spanish America, except Caracas and Havana, and to develop the textile industry of Castile. After almost 40 years of activity, corruption and poor trading-practices brought the company to an end in the 1780s. The piece is one of the greatest classics of scripophily. The very complex design shows the city and port of Seville, under the protection of San Fernando, on one side. Opposite is Neptune and a fine ship. Above, in medallions, are San José, the Virgin of Carmel and San Isidoro. There is so much else - see photo. The share is generally in extremely fine condition, with a fully intact paper seal. If you ask us, this is, on a worldwide level, the prettiest of all 18th century shares.
