Description: Don Bachardy (b.1934) Joe Randolph "J. R." Ackerley, portrait of the British writer and editor, mixed media on wove paper, signed lower right, 75 x 55cm (29 1/2 x 21 1/2 in); with a portrait of Ackerley's sister Nancy West, mixed media on wove paper, signed lower left, 75 x 55cm (29 1/2 x 21 1/2 in) (2). Joe Randolph "J. R." Ackerley (1896-1967) started working for the BBC in 1927, upon which he was promoted to literary editor of its weekly magazine The Listener. Ackerley was openly homosexual, a rarity for his generation, and was an influential gay right's campaigner in the 60s and 70s.
