Description: DAMAGED BY FIRE An autograph signed letter, extensively damaged by fire, to The Lady Osborne Beauclerk at Curraghmore, Portlaw, Co. Waterford, from her son [Lord] Tyrone, on paper with a Windsor monogram, with associated envelope also damaged by fire, marked 'Salved from fire GPO Dublin', and with a second unrelated envelope with Saorstat Eireann superprinted stamp, also addressed to Lady Beauclerk. In November 1922 the sorting office of the G.P.O. in Dublin was at the nearby Rotunda Rink Post Office. In the early hours of 6 November, armed men (presumably Republican irregulars) forced an entry, spread petrol and set the building on fire. An official report mentions 'the loss of a great quantity of correspondence'. Lady Beauclerk was the bluest of blue bloods. A daughter of the Marquess of Lansdowne, she was the widow of the 6th Marquess of Waterford and the wife of the 12th Duke of St. Albans. Curraghmore was the seat of the Marquess of Waterford. The contents of the letter appear to be mainly social. An intriguing memento of troubled times.
