Description: Barnum and Bailey / Imre Kiralfy's Columbus. 1891 30.375 x 38.25in. Strobridge, Cincinnati. Condition A-: expert restoration in margins and image. In red, yellow and blue "hundreds of radiant damsels, in flashing costumes, with myriads of vari colored lanterns celebrating the great achievements of Columbus in front of King Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain A New addition to circuses towards the end of last century was the "Spectacle," a recreation on a gigantic scale of stories mythological, fictional or historical Often, they involved the circus' entire crew and animals, and competing circuses tried to out do each other with their lavish productions. In 1891, this would have been one of the earliest of these "spectacle" performances. ImreKiralfy was a Hungarian showman and producer of large-scale theatrical events whom Barnum hired to put on shows for his circus. Among other such spectacles were "Cleopatra," 'Joan of Arc," "Cinderella," "Solomon and the Queen of Sheba," "Nero or the Burning of Rome," "Jerusalem and the Crusades
