California Artists - 1870-1915
California was officially admitted as the thirty-first state of the United States in 1850. In 1869, with the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens traveled west to seek their fortunes, among them were a number of artists eager to document the landscape of the new west.
These artists were heavily influenced by the Hudson River School, which embodied the dominant techniques for landscape painting on the East Coast. Some, like
