Clique, Le
British group of painters active in the 1830s. It was a short-lived group of young like-minded artists who first met as students at the Royal Academy Schools, London, in the late 1830s. The Clique comprised Richard Dadd, Augustus Egg, W. P. Frith, H. N. O’Neil and John Phillip. Associated with them were Thomas Creswick, Alfred Elmore, Thomas Joy, E. M. Ward and William Bell Scott. Clique, Le
British group of painters active in the 1830s. It was a short-lived group of young like-minded artists who first met as students at the Royal Academy Schools, London, in the late 1830s. The Clique comprised Richard Dadd, Augustus Egg, W. P. Frith, H. N. O’Neil and John Phillip. Associated with them were Thomas Creswick, Alfred Elmore, Thomas Joy, E. M. Ward and William Bell Scott. The original members were united by friendship, shared aspirations and idealistic career aims. Their initial disenchantment with the functions of the Royal Academy also unified them, but it soon faded. All of the original members, except Dadd, later became ARAs or RAs.
