Cranbrook Colony
Group of English painters working c. 18551900. The name was attached in the early 1860s to an informal group of genre painters who spent their summers working in the village of Cranbrook in Kent. The brothers George Hardy (18221909) and Frederick Daniel Hardy (18261911) were disciples of Thomas Webster. F. D. Hardy first settled in Cranbrook about 1854. Webster moved there in 1857 and introduced his friend J. C. Horsley to the Hardys. G. B.
