was
founded
in
Basle
in
1918
and
came
to
prominence
primarily
through
four
exhibitions
of
its
members’
work:
at
the
Kunsthalle
in
Basle
(1918
and
1920),
the
Kunsthaus
in
Zurich
(1919)
and
the
Kunsthalle
in
Berne
(1920).
The
driving
force
behind
it
was
Fritz
Baumann
(1886–1942),
a
painter
and
teacher
from
Basle
who
before
World
War
I
returned
to
his
native
city
