The Theatre Street Saleroom
The site for a Theatre was selected by David Fisher on the 21st October 1813. It originally formed part of The Angel public house, which was sometimes known as The Black Boar. It was then in the ownership of Mr George Brook-Keer.
The shape of the building was dictated by the lack of road frontage to the site, resulting in the long passageway leading down from Bridewell Street (the former name from Theatre Street), to a rectangular parcel of land measuring about 100ft by 32ft. The present car park was formerly occupied by a terrace of cottages, which faced the road.
The Theatre was opened on Saturday 5th February 1814 having been constructed by Mr Thompson at a total cost of the order of £2000. It was calculated to hold 70 - 80 people. The building continued as a Fisher Company Theatre until performances ceased in 1844. Ownership changed in March 1833 to Thomas Sadler, a Norwich grocer and the late Benjamin Moulton who was an Auctioneer. Following the cessation of the Fisher Company's activities at the premises, the building still remained in use as a theatre until 1861.
In 1862 the premises were purchased to be used as a National School and at that stage considerable enlargement and adaptation took place. Later, as the Infants School, the premises were sold by auction in 1962 at the Crown Hotel, Woodbridge when it was purchased by Doctor Littler.
