Lot 66: JOSEPH MORRIS HENDERSON R.S.A (1864-1936) RIVER STUDY 35.5cm x 45.5cm ...
This 14" x 18" oil on board by Joseph Morris Henderson R.S.A. (1864-1936) is a river study that flows with freely observed form and coloring. I would not doubt that this was made on site "en plein air" by the artist -- and hence its effective luminosity.

This painting of the "Turf Stacks" by Paul Henry R.H.A., R.U.A. (Irish 1876-1958) is a small oil on board (7.5" x 10"). Its small size suggests it was a sketch made on site. Perhaps it is the direct observation that makes this landscape so powerful.

 Lot 549 Image

Lot 549: Carlo Bugatti Metal and Bone Inlaid
Unusual or exotic are the terms that come to mind while viewing this bone inlaid metal and wood writing desk designed by Carlo Bugatti c. 1900. Moorish influence is evident in the complex ornament of all surfaces. Placement of this desk underneath an orientalist painting of late nineteenth century vintage would please me. Note that description includes reference to condition: Some repairs to the central niche, and probably replaced writing surface.

 Lot 551 Image

Lot 551: Wurlitzer 'The Bubbler' Jukebox Designed
I'm not much of a fan of Jukebox music -- but how could one resist owning this Wurlitzer "The Bubbler" designed by Paul Fuller, Model No. 1015, c. 1946? Spectacular!-- even with its losses to the walnut veneer and a crack in one plastic tube.

 Lot 555 Image

Lot 555: Two Charles and Rae Eames 'DCW' Design
The Charles and Rae Eames "DCW" Design chairs, introduced in 1945, are, to my mind the best works made by both Evans Products Co. and Herman Miller. Buy this set and own these historic products. They are very comfortable. I know because I own one like these, but mine is red rather than black.

 Lot 668 Image

Lot 668: Victor David Brenner (American 1871-1942)
I believe the sculptor who made the image of Lincoln for the penny is Victor David Brenner (American 1871-1942). This is a superb shallow relief by this sculptor in bronze measuring 9 1/2"x 7 1/4". It is mounted on a green and black marble plaque. This handsome example of American sculpture is well worth collecting. Another is Lot 669, the relief of Theodore Roosevelt by sculptor James Earle Fraser (American 1876-1953) who worked for St. Gaudens and who was a mentor of my late father, the sculptor Avard T. Fairbanks (1897-1987).

 Lot 106 Image

Lot 106: Gustave Baumann. Rose Farm. Woodcut in colors.
This lot and the following one (Lot 107) offer colored woodcut prints by Gustave Baumann (1881-1971). Both are beautiful and ingeniously made by multiple colored printings from carved wood blocks. Baumann's woodblock prints were not always appreciated for their artistic importance. But in recent years they have become eagerly collected. I would acquire both to own a nice pair of signed and numbered works by Baumann.

It measures 53 3/4" x 29 1/2" and is 29 1/2" deep. Stout and strong design/workmanship speaks eloquently for the arts and crafts ideals.
