Lot 1144: PIE SAFE. Poplar with twelve punched tin star decoarted panels and rec...
Pie safes appeal to me as they represent recycled material in that the punched tin usually came from shipping containers. There are two pie safes with punched tin panels in this sale. Look also at Lot 1322 and make your own choice. The tall legs on the one pictured in this lot suggests that the owner wished to keep the contents well elevated away from mice, rats, ants and other pests. In practice, such legs were often stationed on small containers holding water or oil to prevent vermin from climbing up the legs. I own a pie safe like this one but mine is painted. It stands in a back room off the kitchen and now holds bottled and canned goods rather than pies.

Ornament your mantelpiece with this pair of Girandoles. These were made in America sometime in the mid 19th century. Their floral cut prisms are the best quality for the period. The two step marble base with its foliate brass separation marks these girandoles as top of the line. If you have no space on your mantelpiece then use the girandoles to light your sideboard. Sunlight streaming across them will cast dazzling rainbow prismatic bits of light throughout your chamber.
