Lot 44:
Helen Dumond oil on board, landscape, 16" x 20". There are a number of paintings by Helen Dumond in this auction. This oil on board landscape measuring 16"x 20" is a pleasant green image that shows fertile fields probably directly observed by the artist painting on the site.
Lot 45:
Helen Dumond 2 oil on panel of landscapes, 1 with houses and 1 double ... The artist Dumond is represented with two oil panels of landscapes -- one showing houses and another double sided. The fact of a double sided painting suggests to me that she was making sketches on site directly from nature.
Lot 107:
2 Eric Sloane books, 1 with a 1971 sketch, signed Eric Sloane. Eric Sloane is an artist who celebrated the achievements of early rural Americans. There are two Sloane books in this lot, together with a 1971 signed sketch by the artist. There are other lots offering Sloane books worth considering. Take a look and select for yourself. |
Lot 215:
Set of 4 rush seat stenciled chairs. I like the character of these four stencil side chairs. I cannot tell exactly how old they are from the catalogue image, but I suspect that they were made sometime before the Civil War.

Lot 332:
Print of New York, Crystal Palace. New York's Crystal Palace followed the more famous Crystal Palace of London. Both were exposition or fair miracles that displayed architectural inventiveness and served large audiences. The New York Crystal Palace did not enjoy a long life as it burned not many years after it was constructed. This image I believe is a fairly rare and desirable print.

Lot 337:
Print birds-eye view of Mount Vernon, G.F Bill, 1859, Massachusetts. This lithographic birds-eye view of Mount Vernon was made by G.F. Bill in 1859 in Massachusetts. It is an image that should appeal, as it gives an overall view rarely seen. It sould be useful for those who wish to remember their Mt. Vernon experience after making a journey to see the recently renovated grounds. There is a newly opened museum at Mt. Vernon that celebrates the Father of the Country and his great estate in Virginia.

Lot 3203:
(77) PIECE MINTON CHINA DINNERWARE "WINDSOR", PLEASE CONTACT US FOR MO... I often recommend purchasing sets of dinnerware at auction rather than buying the equivalent at much higher prices at a retail shop. One can't resist the value in a beautiful dinner set such as this.

Lot 3:
LAURENCE PHILLIP SISSON (American, 1928-) I believe Laurence Sisson was a New Englander when painted this and the following oil on board . He is a virtuoso painter who manages to use transparency and opacity of pigment to maximum advantage and with great draftsmanship. Contrast the brilliant and bold harmony of colors of gold and blue in this painting with the moody and dark colors of the following (Lot 4) of an almost surreal nocturnal landscape. Both represent New England scenes-- but what a contrast!
Lot 4:
LAURENCE PHILIP SISSON (American, 1928-) EVENING AT THE MAINE COAST Moody and dark is this oil on panel by Laurence Sisson. This is a large work that measures 36 1/2"x 44". It is a tidal landscape for which Sisson is a master interpreter.
Lot 32:
EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE (American, 1896-1978) "MORNING AT GLOUCESTER" Gruppe's familiar haunts as a painter focus on the port town of Gloucester, MA. Here is an oil on canvas showing a two-masted schooner tied to a wharf with a building behind. The key to Gruppe's facility with paint is how freely and convincingly he handles reflections in the water. I met Gruppe in his studio many years ago when I was a sailor and hitchhiked, visiting artists in their studios on Cape Ann, north of Boston.

Lot 39:
ANTHONY THIEME (American, 1888-1954) "PUNTA JORGE, LAGUNA DE ATITLAN G... Thieme was a virtuoso painter from the Rockport/Gloucester area. His best known paintings represent coastal scenes in New England and also in Florida, where he spent winter months. This is a landscape unusual for Anthony Thieme -- a view in Guatemala made in 1948. It is an oil on canvas that measures 25"x30".
Lot 49:
ALDRO THOMPSON HIBBARD (American, 1886-1972) SPRING SHOWERS A powerful and classic oil on canvas by Aldro Thompson Hibbard, who was a master of rolling mountain and country village views made in the Berkshires and Vermont. This one represents Spring Showers in the mountains. It is signed and measures 16"x20".
Lot 57A:
WILLIAM L. SONNTAG (American, 1822-1900) PANORAMIC VALLEY VIEW (POSSIB... This scenic landscape or panoramic valley view is by an artist who painted a generation before Bruce Crane. This is the work of William L. Sonntag (American, 1822-1900). The view may represent New Hampshire. The little townscape in the middle of the canvas can probably be identified. The painting is an oil on canvas that measures 28"x 39 3/4". It has been relined and is on new stretchers-- in a period frame.
Lot 69:
GEORGE INNESS (American, 1825-1894) SUNDOWN-CATTLE DRINKING This looks to me like it is an early Inness -- indeed it is signed lower right "G Inness" and is dated "1868". It measures 16"x 24" and is an oil on canvas, relined and with restored inpainting.
Lot 100:
ANDREW O'CONNOR JR. (American, 1874-1941) VICTOR This bronze is perhaps a proposal for a heroic victory monument to WWI. The figure is entitled "Patria" and bears the mark of foundry A.A Hebrard of Paris. It stands 24" high.
Lot 201:
SIR ALFRED JAMES MUNNINGS (British, 1878-1959) "STUDY OF 'NEWMARKET LA... Munnings is the undisputed twentieth century British master of oil paintings depicting horses. But here is a study of a Newmarket Lad attending a horse. It is simply an unfinished sketch -- but what a powerful and direct observation it is! It is an oil on panel that measures 9 3/4"x 11 1/2". There is another Munnings in this auction. Do not miss it!

Lot 258:
WILHELM FRIEDRICH KUHNERT (German 1865-1926) "LANDSCAPE, RUHUDJI" Here is a handsome oil on board -- an image of an African golden-colored savannah with distant mountains and hills. It measures 15"x 25 1/2", and is painted by the German artist Wilhelm Friedrich Kuhnert.
Lot 278B:
LAURA GILPIN (American, 1891-1980) "THE PUEBLOS A CAMERA CHRONICLE" Laura Gilpin was a well known photographer in America. This book of her photos document pueblo life in the American Southwest. Looks to me to be a desirable acquisition.
Lot 308:
FREDERIC ARTHUR BRIDGMAN (American, 19th/20th Century) "COWS IN A WOO... Rich coloring in this landscape by American artist Frederic Arthur Bridgman appeals to me. It is signed by the artist and measures 11 3/4" x 16".
Lot 370:
WILL ROWLAND DAVIS (American, 1879-1944) PORTRAIT OF AN OLDER WOMAN There are several paintings by Will Rowland Davis, American artist, in this auction. This one looks to me to be a strong and sensitive portrait of an older woman. Light in this portrait is beautifully rendered. Do not miss looking at the other paintings by Davis.

Lot 510:
CHINESE EXPORT FAMILLE ROSE BARREL FORM MUG Here is a beautiful example of late eighteenth century Chinese export porcelain decorated in the Famille Rose pattern. It bears initials "JEW" interlaced in the central monogram on its side. I find that Famille Rose export is particularly satisfying. Note that the next choice is also in the Famille Rose pattern.
Lot 528:
CHINESE EXPORT ARMORIAL SAUCE TUREEN This armorial sauce tureen made in the Chinese export trade is decorated in a way that would look well with the partial tea set listed above in Lot 524. The tureen is beautiful in form and ornament.
Lot 538:
MAHOGANY CARVED CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIR In recent years I've found that some of the most remarkable acquisitions at reasonable costs have been examples of single side chairs that were once probably part of a set. This Massachusetts side chair looks to me to be a late eighteenth century example nicely carved. Be sure to check this one out at first hand to determine its age by lifting the slip seat and inspection of construction features and color of wood that indicates age.
Lot 552:
LARGE SCRIMSHAWED ANTIQUE TOOTH Scrimshaw of this quality is not often encountered -- There is much to enjoy in the pictures scratched into the tooth -- including a three-masted ship flying an American flag and a group of sperm whales as well as a woman with an embracing man.
Lot 559:
INTERESTING SHIP'S MAHOGANY LAVATORY CABINET I've not seen anything like this before. But then I've not been frequenting shops dealing in marine collectibles. That this lavatory cabinet is made of mahogany indicates it was made for an elegant vessel.
Lot 589:
TWO PART CURLY MAPLE QUEEN ANNE HIGHBOY Eighteenth century Rhode Island furniture is usually very beautiful. This Chest on Frame or Highboy with its flat top and legs that end in slipper feet is in the manner of the Newport School -- perhaps the work of Christopher Townsend or a member of the Townsend/ Goddard clan of elegant woodworkers.
Lot 595:
CARVED AND PAINTED EAGLE WITH FLAG PLAQUE ATTRIBUTED TO GEORGE STAPF Two painted eagle plaques are offered in this sale. Take a good look at both. I select this one because it is so unusual to find one made in the Harrisburg/Lancaster, PA. area. This one is attributed to George Stapf (1862-1958). If you can visit the Winterthur Museum in Delaware, you will find a sizeable collection of Eagle banner plaques displayed in an entry hall -- a spectacular collection worth seeing.

Lot 660:
WONDERFUL ANTIQUE MICMAC DECORATED QUILLWORK SLIPPER CHAIR The Algonquian Micmac Indians of Maine and coastal Northern Provinces of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick produced porcupine quill work decorated baskets as well as elaborately wrought quill work decorated chairs. This example is a rare item to make it into the antiques auction market. This chair represents collaboration between native tribal people and descendants of settlers who came to the New World -- probably French. The frame of this chair no doubt was made by a non native craftsman. I once acquired for the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, a quillwork decorated Micmac chair the frame of which was produced by a chairmaking factory.

Lot 663:
AFTER KARL BODMER (Swiss, 1809-1893) TWENTY-FIVE ASSORTED ENGRAVINGS What an opportunity this lot presents. Bodmer was the artist who accompanied the expedition to the American West with Maximilian, Prince of Wied Neuwied, on a tour of the United States between 1832-34. The eighty one plates issued in Maximilian's Travels are based on sketches made by Bodmer. Most of the original drawings are displayed in the Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska.

Lot 665:
FINE PAIR OF FEDERAL BELL METAL DOUBLE URN TOP ANDIRONS What a handsome pair of andirons these are! Bell metal is a particularly desirable alloy of brass because its color, which is more pinkish/red rather than the yellow brass, derives from a high content of copper.

Lot 710:
EARLY STAFFORDSHIRE FIGURE OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN To celebrate this past year of Franklin's 300th birth, would it not be a joy to own an English Staffordshire-made image of the great man?
Lot 810:
OUTSTANDING QUEEN ANNE DROP-LEAF TABLE IN RED PAINT This looks like a wonderful Queen Anne drop-leaf table that bears old, if not original, red paint. Its provenance cited is: Ex- Kent Tuttle, a well-known dealer in New England. The table stands 26 1/2" high.
Lot 847:
WONDERFUL 18TH CENTURY BANISTER BACK SIDE CHAIR Here is a fine banister back side chair of the eighteenth century. It is painted black and shows much wear. The seat is made of splint oak or ash and bears some paint. The height of the seat is 13 1/2" -- too low, but clearly the result of its having its feet cut down -- as evidenced by the bottom stretchers scraping the floor. It is nice to see an antique like this left as is.
Lot 851:
STACK OF SEVEN GRADUATED PAINTED ROUND BOXES There are two lots of painted boxes in this auction. Look at both. This lot is my favorite, as it offers an instant and handsome collection.
Lot 1022:
MAINE REDWARE GLAZED CROCK What a handsomely made glazed redware crock this is. I like the bold splotch underglaze decoration on its sides. This work is probably covered with a lead glaze. It is therefore unwise to store any food within it -- simply admire the crock for its artistic beauty.
Lot 1024:
GREEN GLAZED REDWARE HANDLED JUG I love the form and color of this redware handled jug. My guess is that it was made somewhere in the Newburyport area late in the eighteenth century. The lead glaze shows iridescence or a display of rainbow like colors even in the highlights displayed in the catalogue image. The microscopic breakdown of the surface of the glaze is an indicator of age.

Lot 1051:
AMERICAN PEWTER TEAPOT BY ROSWELL GLEASON Rosewell Gleason was an important pewterer of Dorchester, MA. I removed woodwork from two rooms of his home before it was burned by arsons in that town. These rooms are to be installed at the MFA, Boston, with the building of a new American wing.
Lot 1060:
UNUSUAL VERTEBRAE FOLK ART TABLE Quirky is the word for this folk art table. It is made of a whale vertebrae with amusing additions to make it into a table.
Lot 1092:
TWO GALLON OVOID CROCK BY NORTON & FENTON Nice form distinguishes this salt glaze stoneware ovoid crock marked by makers Norton & Fenton of East Burlington, VT. This is just the right size to serve as a waste basket beside a desk if it is not displayed on shelves together with other distinguished examples of American pottery.
