WILLIAM TROST RICHARDS (1833-1905): MAINE COAST The sea was what William Trost Richards (American, 1833-1905) painted best. Lot 180:
WALTER STEUMPFIG (1914-1970): OPEN DOOR Walter Steumpfig (1914-1970) was an artist of great mystery and power. He was also an exceptional draftsman.
I took criticism from him while I studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the '50s. His works always seemed to have a lonesome quality or sense of yearning -- as is represented in this work with a figure at the door looking outward from a studio with an empty easel behind him. I wish that I could afford to acquire this oil on canvas titled "Open Door."

Lot 779:
VIEW OF BOSTON AND THE OLD STATE HOUSE, by Francois Xavier Habermann, ... What a fiction this image presents! The artist, Francois Xavier Habermann, obviously knew nothing about Boston, the Old State House, or cared at all about depicting the truth. This print was simply made up for sale to print viewers who themselves probably did not care for the visual truth either. Entertainment is the point of this print -- made c. 1760. Few print viewers abroad ever expected to visit Boston, so what did it matter anyway? I own an 18th century print made in Holland claiming that it depicts Philadelphia. The view looks more like Amsterdam.
