Apple Tree Auction Center

 Lot 128 Image

Lot 128: COBALT DECORATED 4 GALLON GRAY STONEWARE CROCK W/EAGLE, NEW GENEVA FAY...
I love salt glaze stoneware made in Western Pennsylvania in the 19th century. This is New Geneva ware of Fayette County.

 Lot 129 Image

Lot 129: JAMES HAMILTON & CO COBALT DECORATED 3 GALLON
The pottery made by James Hamilton & Co. is another firm of Western Pennsylvania. I own several pieces like this and use them as waste baskets. Since both this example and the previous crock are listed with cracks, they may be acquired reasonably enough. If the buyer uses them as I do it does not matter if they have a crack or a break.

 Lot 214 Image

Lot 214: L & J.G. STICKLEY OAK ARTS & CRAFTS SETTLE, ORIGINAL FINISH W/...
The settle of the Arts and Crafts tradition is the essential piece of parlor furniture to acquire in order to furnish a chamber in the proper style c. 1900. L & J.G. Stickley are well respected makers.

 Lot 216 Image

Lot 216: LIMBERT OAK ARTS & CRAFTS SINGLE DOOR BOOKCASE, STAMPED SIGNED O...
Less well known than Stickley is the firm of Limbert -- but such a book case would look very well with the settle.

 Lot 217 Image

Lot 217A: ANTIQUE PERSIAN HERIZ - CIRCA - 1930 8.2 X 11-3.
This Persian Heriz c. 1930 like a fine example. It could provide the floor covering for an Arts and Crafts parlor setting.

 Lot 232 Image

Lot 232: GENTS 1979 18K Y G ROLEX PRESIDENTIAL WATCH W/ CHAMPAGNE DIAL, DAY &a...
Here is obviously an important watch. I am not personally inclined to wear such valuable articles as I tend to lose them. But for a person with a great sense of style this watch might be just the right item to complete his wardrobe.

 Lot 252 Image

Lot 252: NICODEMUS POTTERY MEDAL PRESENTED TO ARTIST ROBERT O. CHADEAYNE 1965 B...
Documents of this sort appeal to me. It is only 4" high, so would fit nicely on a small shelf or dresser.

 Lot 298 Image

Lot 298: ANTIQUE KAZAK CAUCASIAN RUG, CIRCA 1910, 4.2' X 8.0', SIGNED
The richness of color in this Kazak or Caucasian rug appeals to me.

 Lot 340 Image

Lot 340: QUEEN ANN MAHOGANY OPEN ARM CHAIR WITH SCROLLED ARM SUPPORTS, PIERCED ...
Probably made north of Boston c. 1770, this open armchair features nicely scrolled arms and handles.

 Lot 397 Image

Lot 397: 3 COLOR GEORGE WASHINGTON JACQUARD COVERLET
Here is a masterpiece jacquard coverlet weaving from Lancaster Pennsylvania. It depicts George Washington and records the weaver as Philip Schum - in 1869.

Fusco Auctions

 Lot 1006 Image

Lot 1006: Dinky #622 10 Ten Army Truck
There are soldiers who drove big 10-ton army trucks in World War II. A brother of mine was one who did so for a time, serving under Patton. I hardly think that he would wish to recall that experience with a toy. Yet there are many youngsters who would love to imagine themselves behind the wheel of such a monster.

 Lot 1015 Image

Lot 1015: A.C. Williams Seated Pig Penny Bank
What a classic: a real piggy bank! Also, it was made at about the time of my birth. I like its form and simplicity.

 Lot 1021 Image

Lot 1021: Spanish Art Burlington Magazine Monograph II
E. Weyhe of New York was a book dealer, art dealer, publisher, and connoisseur of things off the beaten track. It was a thrill to stop in the Weyhe shop and poke through holdings. Always one would come away with obscure but useful publications that could not be found elsewhere. No doubt this book contains important insights into artists now long forgotten.

 Lot 1031 Image

Lot 1031: A.C Williams Domes Still Bank 1899-1934
A bank! A cast iron bank. I know that there are many people who have shelves of such banks in their homes. To me, this one looks to be special -- especially because it preserves most of its original paint.

 Lot 1051 Image

Lot 1051: Group of Five Antique Reference Books
I never thought that I would be identifying a copy of my own book about furniture. I've given away so many copies that I now realize it is regarded as a landmark publication which many try to acquire. I've stopped giving away copies because I'm down to the last two -- which I keep in reserve for our two daughters.

 Lot 1066 Image

Lot 1066: Pair of Old Bait Casting Reels
Old fishing equipment appeals to me because I once enjoyed fishing in lakes, ponds and streams. These are the kind of reels that would work well for casting out bait from the end of a pier -- in search of bass or pike.

 Lot 1076 Image

Lot 1076: Early 20th c. Lion Tail Right Ears Up Still Bank
I am a sucker for lions as my middle name is Leo. This looks like a nice iron bank for keeping change gathered in one spot.

 Lot 1105 Image

Lot 1105: Group of Eleven Collectible Reference Books
As you may have noticed, I am not a keen student of what is called "collectibles". For those who are, these books may prove useful.

 Lot 1139 Image

Lot 1139: 1893 Columbian World Exhibition Photo Book
The World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 set the stage for a renewed interest in classicism. The white city of the Worlds Fair went on to promote a garden beautiful movement and reshaped the mall in Washington DC. It would be intiguing to own this period and photo record of the Chicago Fair.

 Lot 1145 Image

Lot 1145: The Emerald City of OZ Frank Baum 1910 Reilly Lee
I report that collectibles are not my thing. Now I point to a classic book of 1910 which really appeals to me-- The Emerald City of Oz with color plates all intact.

 Lot 1151 Image

Lot 1151: The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyon
Here is a classic book. The text of which comes from 17th century England. Early American children began to learn to read through the Bible and by reading Bunyon's Pilgrim's Progress. It is filled with moral lessons. This looks like an appealing volume with numerous illustrations made at the turn of the century.

 Lot 1164 Image

Lot 1164: Vintage George Washington Cast Iron Still Bank
Well, here is a figure to protect your coins -- George Washington as an iron bank is painted red, white and blue.

 Lot 1188 Image

Lot 1188: Cast Metal Bank Building Still Bank
The last bank in this auction that catches my eye is this standing bank building. It is made of cast white metal (not iron). White metal is, like pewter, an alloy made with tin and other metals that lowers its melting point. So this is not a thing to place on the top of a radiator or heater. Some white metals will melt in boiling water. The form of this bank might compliment other banks you have gathered together over the years. If you have not done so, than this example may be where to begin.

Farmer Auctions

 Lot 18 Image

Lot 18: Tobacco Leaf Quilt
The folk art of quilting is seemingly timeless. Here is a fine quilt of c. 1900 that would look well in either a period or contemporary setting.

 Lot 24 Image

Lot 24: Cast Iron Boot Scraper
I do not know the date of this cast iron boot scraper. But as spring arrives it would be a useful greeter on the back porch before entering the home. I like its abstract design.

 Lot 29 Image

Lot 29: Figured Walnut William & Mary Style Gateleg Table
Robust turnings are found on this gateleg table of fairly modern vintage. It is standard for an auction house to attach the word "style" after a period term to indicate that a work is not actually of the period. Therefore, this table is identified as a walnut William & Mary style gateleg table. That terminology is important because it means that the buyer will not be expected to pay an "antique" price for the object. If this were a table actually made in the early 1700s the price would sail off the charts. But here is an opportunity to by a fine piece of craftsmanship at a fraction of the cost of an antique.

 Lot 56 Image

Lot 56: Lionel Train Set
For the lovers of toy trains I here again select the Lionel set with its original fittings and boxes with cardboard liners.

 Lot 106 Image

Lot 106: English Book Press
Ah, an English book press is just the machine for a serious collector of period books!

 Lot 147 Image

Lot 147: Ladies Star Sapphire Ring
Handsome is the optical effect of a sapphire on the human eye. I'll not go into tedious detail about the optics involved. But this ring looks like a desirable piece to me.

 Lot 176 Image

Lot 176: American Sterling Tiffany & Co Cocktail Set
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries the drink known as a cocktail became popular in elite society. Tiffany & Co., was attracted to such marketing opportunities and produced some handsome sterling silver cocktail services -- often inspired by Asian art -- as with this example.

 Lot 181 Image

Lot 181: American Sterling S. Kirk & Son Co Pitcher
Here is a fine example of the repousse work of S. Kirk & Son of Baltimore, MD.

 Lot 186 Image

Lot 186: American Sterling S. Kirk & Son Co Monteith Bowl
Even more elaborate and larger is this monteith bowl by S. Kirk & Son which was used at the table or sideboard to chill, rinse, and hang stem wineglasses. This also is a fine example of Kirk's repousse work that took so many hours to produce by hammering from within, and then with a rounded chisel chasing the ornament onto the outside of the vessel.

 Lot 3 Image

Lot 3: ANONYMOUS [DAY OF POLISH JEWS.] 1942. 26x19 inches. Segenon, Tel Aviv.
Graphically powerful is the image of this poster made in 1942 - illustrating the Day of Polish Jews and symbolizes the Holocaust rememberance ...for the Jewish community as well as the rest of the world.

There is a group lot of about 40 various Hebrew book plates. The one illustrated on Artfact is a delightful design evocative of the beautiful sound of music for which Jewish culture is justly famous. A wonderful group of Judaica artifacts for any collector.

Lot 12: VARIOUS ARTISTS [ISRAELI PORTFOLIO.] Circa 1960s. Each approximately 1...
Children picking Jaffa oranges and other fruit in the 1960's is emblematic of the idealism and fresh beginnings at the time of settlement and development of Israel. This is one of 20 small posters offered in a single lot. The black trunk of the tree is the shape of the geography of the land. It is hard to know if this was an intended or accidental visual reference . The colors red, blue and yellow are used together with green and orange in complex harmony. Oranges were important farming exports that helped sustain life in a hostile and hot environment.

 Lot 26 Image

Lot 26: A. ALCHNI [LISTEN! THE STORM IS CALLING US! KEREN KAYEMET.] 37x25 inch...
The man cultivating his land in the face of a storm is, of course symbolic. The words of Bialik, the Israeli national poet (born in Russia) is included in the title. It quotes the poet who calls on Jewish men and woman to volunteer to work the land of Israel and florish. Especially as a colorless print, it is an effective pictorial representation of hard times of the Jewish people in Israel before independent times.

 Lot 29 Image

Lot 29: JOSEPH BASS BRASILIANA. 1957. 39x27 inches.
Movement is captured in this zig-zag composition of Brazilian dancers who perform against a red backdrop. That use of red is especially appropriate to suggest the pulse of life.

 Lot 41 Image

Lot 41: HAMORI S.S. JERUSALEM. Circa 1953. 38x27 inches. Lewin Epstein, Israel...
This is a wonderful artifact that may recall warm memories from passengers who crossed the Atlantic and the Mediterranian with the Zim passenger liners at the times of pre trans-Atlantic flights. As a modern design this poster contrasts human-built environments at land and sea effectively using a blue circle complimented by a burnt orange-colored background. These colors are, of course, emblematic of sea and land respectively.

By tilting and abstracting an image of a skier, this poster makes a dramatic announcement of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival of 1949.

Catalog: Vintage Posters
 Lot 85 Image

Lot 85: ANONYMOUS MIDDLEBURY WINTER CARNIVAL. 1966. 23x18 inches.
An unusual graphic abstraction of a ski and ski pole in black and white against blue makes the viewer pause to grasp its meaning for the Middlebury Winter Carnival of 1966.

Catalog: Vintage Posters
 Lot 90 Image

Lot 90: ANONYMOUS SUN VALLEY. 38x25 inches.
Here is a photomontage of the heroic skier Gretchen Fraser, winner of the 1948 St. Moritz Winter Olympics Women's Slalom. It depicts her at Sun Valley where the sun is, of course, an important feature of the composition -- a bright orange disk in the sky.

Lot 158: HENRY REB LE SALEVE. 1932. 46x62 inches. Generale, Grenoble.
The brave new world of mankind's assertive technology in the Alps is stressed in this 1932 print showing a massive terminal of the Saleve telepherique located near Geneva.

Catalog: Vintage Posters
 Lot 164 Image

Lot 164: F. C. VEIT NEW HAVEN R.R. 40x27 inches.
Through carefully considered light and shadow the artist F.C. Veit employed an unusual viewpoint that looks up into the face of a woman. Her face is filled with warm reflected light. The visor of her hat offers equally warm transmitted light. Behind the glowing and smiling face is represented the locomotive engine of the New Haven RR. The title of which is printed below in canted letters of vermillion or scarlet red. A swatch of sky completes the triadic primary color harmony for this effective poster.

 Lot 195 Image

Lot 195: ANONYMOUS BUFFALO BILL''S WILD WEST AND PIONEER EXHIBITION. 28x42 inch...
Here is a poster to celebrate Buffalo Bill's wild west and pioneer exhibition. The hot colors of this poster express the heat of the American desert. Oranges, reds and yellows prevail. One can virtually "feel" the heat coming off the sun-drenched and parched earth. Depicted is the Great Train Hold Up - one of Buffalo Bill's dramatic reenactments. This offered contrasts between the iron horse and the real animals. It also presented dramatic confrontations to attract a crowd.

 Lot 211 Image

Lot 211: ANONYMOUS IMPERIAL AIRWAYS. 1939. 25x40 inches. Ben Johnson & Co.,...
The anatomy of passenger travel by air in 1939 is depicted in this example of a Hydravian plane by Imperial Airways. It is a 4-engine prop with pontoons. Note that the lettering is in orange against a green background. Looks to me like passangers were not crammed into tight seating. Oh my, how times have changed!

Lot 223: ANONYMOUS ON THE BOWERY / STEVE BRODIE. 1895. 82x39 inches. The Strobr...
The story behind this print is that Steve Brodie faked his jump with a dummy. But many people were on hand to witness the event and they believed that he made the leap and lived -- for he won the bet of $200 that he could do it. This is a dramatic image that advertised one of Brodie's vaudeville acts in 1894 entitled "On the Bowery".

Lot 309: HOWARD CHANDLER CHRISTY WE THE PEOPLE. 1937. 42x28 inches.
In 1937 the fashionable American artist Howard Chandler Christy was commissioned to design this image of "We the People." Since Christy was most famous for his portraits of idealized women, he decided to show the founding fathers pictured under a large female muse who rises in smoke and dominates the composition with appropriate and colorful symbols. The project finally resulted in a 20x30 foot painting that hangs in the U.S. Capitol building. While George Washington looks appropriately inspired, the elder statesman, Ben Franklin, seems unimpressed.

I love the little Dutch interior scenes made by Ostade and others. They are so filled with decorative objects that help me understand how such things were used. I also realize that these objects are often placed in paintings to represent complex symbolic meanings.

 Lot 14 Image

Lot 14: James Inskipp, (British, 1790-1868), Landscape Scene
Nice luminosity of sky and reflection on water are features that attract me to this painting.

Catalog: Fine Art
 Lot 19 Image

Lot 19: Henry Dawson, (British, 1811-1878), Landscape
When I look at this British landscape painting I realize that the quest for meaning in the light of sky and remote places is part of the Romantic era which American artist Frederick Church expressed so well. Turner also had a big influence on the artist who painted this late afternoon landscape with a mysteriously arched and distant bridge.

 Lot 26 Image

Lot 26: Raffaele Mainella, (Italian, 1858-1907), Desert Oasis
The exotic world of the Near East drew many artists from around the world to the holy land in the third quarter of the 19th century. Here, a lone camel with rider is pictured on a bank of sand and is reflected below in the water of a desert oasis. This is a watercolor.

Lot 100: Wayne Morrell, (American, b. 1923), Winter Walk

Lot 124: Robert Ottokar Lindneaux, (American, 1871-1970), The Silversmith
Not often is one given the chance to acquire an image of a Native American (probably Navajo) silversmith at work. This looks like it was observed directly when it was made in 1930. It is an oil on canvas that measures 37 1/2"x 33 1/4".

Catalog: Fine Art
 Lot 166 Image

Lot 166: Seymour Rosofsky, (American, 1924-1981), Portrait of a Man
I wonder if this image is a portrait of the artist Seymour Rosofsky (American, 1924-81) himself. It is a forceful frontal portrait with strong light and shade.

 Lot 280 Image

Lot 280: Anders Leonard Zorn, (Swedish, 1860-1920), La Mere dinommee La Madone

 Lot 310 Image

Lot 310: John James Audubon, (American, 1785-1851), Great Auk
I realize that this print is from a recent issue of Audubon's birds of America. The reason why I'm attracted to this print is because it pictures an extinct bird, the Great Auk. In the 1950's while I studied in the Pennsylvania Academy of The Fine Arts, I also worked nights at the Academy of Natural Sciences at Broad and Cherry Streets, Philadelphia. There I painted the background for a Great Auk diorama while the museum preparator relaxed the study skins of a pair of these great birds and mounted them in lifelike positions in the habitat. Ever since I've had special fondness for the Great Auk that vanished from this world in the 19th century.

 Lot 98 Image

Lot 98: An 18 Karat White Gold, Peridot Ring and Pendant Convertible,
I believe that it is difficult to judge the full merits of this peridot ring of some 60 carats without seeing it first hand. How much greater it is in reality, I can only imagine.

 Lot 108 Image

Lot 108: A Four Strand, Beaded, Red Coral Necklace,
Colonial portraits of children almost always show them with a strand of coral beads. The youngest children are shown with coral and silver bells (an early form of a pacifier). When I was at the Winterthur Museum and my children were young, I acquired coral bead necklaces for them to wear. I thought that a strand or two around a child's neck looked marvelous.

Mailboat cancellations are intriguing as the envelope produces evidence of the whereabouts of packet ships. This one is a sailor's envelope of 13 May 1860. I can relate to this, for the writer comments that on a recent voyage he encountered a storm that tore away most of the sails and their rigging.
