Never can I find enough shelf space for the small stuff I gather. This wall-hung whale-side shelf could help very nicely.

 Lot 34 Image

Lot 34: FRAMED WATERCOLOR How Family Crest, Pennsylvania. Gilt frame worn. 15"...
I collect American-made family arms, but my collection is of Boston-made arms. This Pennsylvania watercolor arms must date to the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century. Lots of inscription may be read on this work to help to date it and identify the heraldry master.

 Lot 51 Image

Lot 51: CASED MINIATURE PORTRAIT Of a gentleman. Brass locket mount with hair ...
Well painted and without pretense, but how this miniature painting cries out for the identification of the sitter and the limner.

 Lot 53 Image

Lot 53: ANTIQUE AMERICAN CHIPPENDALE SIDE CHAIR In mahogany with voluted ears ...
The smartly shaped splat in the back is what attracts me to this side chair. I call it the owl eye pattern that seems to have been favored by coastal New England chairmakers.

 Lot 59 Image

Lot 59: ANTIQUE AMERICAN SPANISH-FOOT SIDE CHAIR In maple with rush seat. Vasi...
Here is a side chair type that seems to have come out of the Portsmouth, New Hampshire area in the eighteenth century. It is an attractive specimen.

Showing its age, this child's canted high chair is a charmer. I like the sausage turnings and the stance of the chair.

Lot 139: PEWTER COFFEEPOT In bulbous form. Eagle mark of Boardman, New York. He...
Lots of nice pewter is offered in this auction. This marked Boardman coffeepot seems almost from the same mold as the coffeepot of the next lot with an eagle Griswold mark.

 Lot 142 Image

Lot 142: PEWTER TEAPOT By Thomas Danforth and Samuel Boardman. Height 7".
Thomas Danforth and Samuel Boardman are the makers of this splendid pewter teapot. It is a wonderful example of the work of those pewterers who also made the two teapots of Lot 146.

 Lot 150 Image

Very desirable works of the American Federal Period (c. 1800) are these double lemon-top brass andirons which come with a pair of period brass jamb hooks having oval backplates. A buyer would be wise to seriously consider this! The lemon shaped tops do not show up with much frequency.

I like the red-on-tan geometric design on this finely crafted, tightly woven Menominee splint basket with handle.

 Lot 157 Image

Lot 157: OLD NANTUCKET SWING-HANDLED BASKET Unmarked. Height 4¾". Diameter 8".
Nantucket is the place where baskets of this sort were, and still are, made. I prefer the older baskets such as this one.

 Lot 162 Image

Lot 162: ANTIQUE AMERICAN ONE-DRAWER BLANKET CHEST With original rosewood grain...
Wonderful surface to the paint on this blanket chest recommends it. It is a New England chest made c. 1800.

Nice color on this deep blue ribbed glass bottle with original stopper. I remember that there is an almost identical bottle in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Lot 230: Cape Cod - Chatham MA - Portraits Oils
Sears family history from Chatham, MA comes with this pair of framed folk portraits that date c. 1835-40. Here is an opportunity to perform some research for identification of the sitters.

 Lot 231 Image

Lot 231: PAIR OF PRIMITIVE PAINTINGS Portraits of a man a
There seems to be some cleaning needed with this pair of strange primivitive painted portraits of a man and a woman. They come with sponge-painted frames.

 Lot 242 Image

Lot 242: FRAMED PHOTOGRAPH "A Nantucket Cloud"... "For David and Eleanor Craig ...
1933 is the year I was born, but that is not why I select this photo. I pick it simply because I feel that it is beautiful -- "A Nantucket Cloud" -- how poetic!

 Lot 248 Image

Lot 248: AMERICAN SCHOOL, 19th Century, "Portrait of Henry Swasey"., Oil on pan...
A funny little face is seen on this "Portrait of Henry Swasey." In 1839 he was two years old when the portrait was painted. Read the entry to learn more about his being lost at sea as a mature man bound for England in 1860.

 Lot 273 Image

I've often mentioned in the Artfact Newsletters my 17th century family home in Dedham, MA. Here it is pictured on Dedham pottery.

Quite a few examples of British lustre pottery are offered in this auction. I select this example because it depicts Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Much sought after by collectors of transfer ware blue and white is the image of the Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Island. At the Winterthur Museum there is an entire room devoted to this ware.

 Lot 352 Image

Lot 352: CHARLES HENRY GIFFORD, American, 1839-1905, "

Lot 353: CHARLES HENRY GIFFORD, American, 1839-1904, "Back to shore", depicting...
Gifford made this atmospheric twilight image of fishermen in a dory rowing back to shore with sailboats shown against the evening sky. It is a somber and moody painting that appeals to me.

 Lot 379 Image

Lot 379: SHAKER NO. 7 ARMED ROCKER Mt. Lebanon, New York origin. Sans taped sea...
You can purchase the right style woven tapes at the Hancock Shaker Village in western Massachusetts. Spend a couple of evenings weaving the seat and you will gain much appreciation for this Shaker, Mt. Lebanon No. 7 masterpiece.

This nicely shaped and straight forward eighteenth century American Tavern Table appeals to me. It bears an appropriate old red-sash finish.

 Lot 403 Image

Lot 403: ANTIQUE ENGLISH DARK BLUE STAFFORDSHIRE PLATE &#
I like the conceit of Lafayette seated before Washington's tomb. The image is hardly accurate as Washington was not put into an urn. But the idea is classicly appropriate.

 Lot 413 Image

Lot 413: ELDRED WHEELER PIPE BOX In pine with one drawer.
The maker, Eldred Wheeler, is a living woodworker who descends from generations of woodworkers. He is a master cabinetmaker. Years ago I acquired a piece of his furniture for the contemporary American furniture collections for the MFA, Boston.

Here is a Boston-made percussion Damascus side-by-side shotgun by William Read. The dolphin-form hammers are nice.

 Lot 533 Image

Lot 533: AMERICAN SCHOOL, Early 20th Century, Monument Valley., Oil on board, 9...
If I recall southwest landscape correctly, this is not Monument Valley. It looks like an image of the cliffs of the Green River, so often painted by Thomas Moran. In fact, this might have been based on a painting that Moran made in the late nineteenth century.

Lot 86: HANNAH FINDLATOR (B.1977) OLD WOMAN SEATED IN THE SNOW 122cm x 163cm (...
I like the composition of this oil on board that is signed and dated 2004. It suggests a lonesome quality experienced in winter with barren trees and snow.

Lot 104: ALEXANDER MILLER (B. 1960) FIGURE 60cm x 50cm (23.5in x 19.5in)
Obviously the bum on the street pictured in this oil on canvas hardly knows what he is about. Indecision is his fate as he looks into the light.

Lot 181: ETHEL WALKER (B.1941) WHITE WATER 101cm x 90cm (39.75in x 35.5in)
Here is a big abstraction entitled "White Water." An apt title but it could just as well be a representation of mountains with snow. What matters is that the painting generates a sense of motion and dynamic spatial forms.
