 Lot 1 Image

Lot 1: 1960 s Cleveland Browns Nodder Bobble Head
An amusing Cleveland Browns Nodder Bobble Head -- a novelty item of mass culture of 1960-61.

 Lot 132 Image

Lot 132: 1964 NFL Championship Game Program MINT
Artistically this is one of the most interesting compositions I've yet seen in photos for sports program covers. Moreover, it is in pristine condition and represents a championship when the Browns beat the Colts 27-0!

 Lot 140 Image

Lot 140: Cleveland Browns First Game Ever Program 46
Aug. 30, 1946 is the date when Cleveland Browns played against the Brooklyn Dodgers in Akron's Rubber Bowl. Offered here is the first game ever program in '46. It comes with a newspaper that has an article about the game. The image of a fashionably dressed woman seated on a football shows how smartly many dressed when attending games in the 40's. This is a classic program.

 Lot 145 Image

Lot 145: 1946 Browns vs. Seahawks First Game Program
Here is a program for the first regular season of '46 when the Browns beat the Miami Seahawks 44-0! The Lot comes with a page from Life Magazine that depicts the game.

 Lot 94 Image

Lot 94: A LARGE IRON METEORITE FROM METEOR CRATER
Several impressive fragments of meteorites are offered in this auction. I select this one because it comes from a site near Winslow, Arizona, where the largest impact crater exists and which represents an event about 50,000 years ago that had the force of more than 100 large atomic bombs. Read the entry for this and the other meteorite specimens and learn about our iron-nickel "visitors" from outer space.

 Lot 113 Image

Lot 113: AFRICAN PUFF ADDER
This specimen recalls the fatal day when a former Zoology lab partner of mine died from the bite of an African puff adder. This took place many years ago and many years after we had studied as undergraduates in a course about Comparative Vertibrate Anatomy.

 Lot 132 Image

Lot 132: AN EXTREMELY RARE FOSSIL SEA MONSTER - MOSASAURUS
Here is a gigantic specimen that measures 22 1/2 feet long. It is the fossil of one of the most ferocious creatures of the ancient (Cretaceous Period) seas-- the Mosasaurus. This is a Prognathodon -- a species of the mosasaurs of the late Cretaceous oceans -- and this is the first Moroccan specimen of its type to be mounted in its entirety -- about 70 percent complete.

 Lot 143 Image

Lot 143: FOSSIL SHARK'S TOOTH
Here is a tooth of one of the largests sharks of all times, the Carcharocles megalodon. The shark that owned this tooth was over 50 feet long! Fortunately, the Megalodon shark does not survive today.

 Lot 146 Image

Lot 146: FOSSIL DRAGONFLY
Solnhofen limestone deposits of Germany produce the stone used for making traditional lithographs. The limestone of Solnhofen also produces spectacular fossils like this fragile dragon fly that measures 5 1/4" in length and a wingspan of 7". Look for other Solnhofen fossils in this auction. The limestone beds were laid down some 90 million years ago.

 Lot 26 Image

Lot 26: EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE (American 1896-1978)
The rich coloring of this oil landscape by the famous Cape Ann artist Emile Albert Gruppe reminds me somewhat of the splendid woodland interiors made by John F. Carlson. In Gruppe's work the water shimmers like hammered and burnt bronze or copper. Beautiful!

 Lot 87 Image

Lot 87: ALFRED THOMPSON BRICHER (American 1837-1908)
Two Bricher paintings are offered in this sale. This one represents a glowing sky and beach with cliffs and calm water.

 Lot 96 Image

Lot 96: OGDEN MINTON PLEISSNER (American 1905-1983)
The painter Ogden Minton Pleissner never fails to surprise and please with his dramatic and superbly executed water colors. Here the sense of rushing water is magnificently represented -- with freedom -- and echoed in the clouds of the sky. The focus of this painting is on two fishermen on the Great Watchishou River, North Shore, St. Lawrence, Quebec. One holds a bent pole indicating a catch of a salmon. The other man stands ready with a net to bring in the fish. The image of fishermen is interesting, but they are simply part of the grand vista of nature and the energy of rushing waters.

 Lot 129 Image

Lot 129: PHILIP HOWARD EVERGOOD (American 1901-1973)
Highly decorative in its composition of red poppies held by a young blond girl -- this oil on canvas by Philip Evergood is signed by the artist and dated '55. Three labels record its provenance at the Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Terry Dintenfass, Inc. dealership in New York.

 Lot 135 Image

Lot 135: CHARLES EDWIN LEWIS GREEN (American 1844-1915)
Close observation of the rocks at Whale's Beach, Swampscott in this oil on canvas by Charles Edwin Lewis Green (1844-1915) makes me desire to go to that site to see if it is as ruddy-golden and beautiful today as it was when he painted it.

 Lot 327 Image

Lot 327: JOSEPH HENRY HATFIELD (American 1863-1928)
Sentiment without sentimentality appeals in this oil entitled "Doll Time". The real subject is the quality of light that spills through the room to reveal the figure of the child. Her doll would hardly be noticed were it not for its red color at her shoulder. Beautifully soft and tender is the light.

 Lot 346 Image

Lot 346: STOW WENGENROTH (American 1906-1978) "WILD
The images by New England artist Stow Wengenroth are almost always haunting and mysterious. Here the swift motion of the river over rocks signals a direction of nature echoed in the flight of the crows. The sense of wonder created by Wengenroth appeals.

 Lot 390 Image

Lot 390: REGINALD MARSH (American 1898-1954) TRAIN YARD
Reginald March is often at his best with water colors when he paints images of trains. Of course, his images of striding and bustling women are more famous. Yet here with a train image his brush flows smoothly to suggest energy and motion. The rails and the lines overhead reinforce that idea.

 Lot 818 Image

Lot 818: IMPORTANT RARE PAIR OF BALTIMORE FEDERAL
What a potential "find" these chairs suggest to me. Baltimore Federal sidechairs of this quality and design are hardly abundant today. Here is an opportunity!

Lot 937: RHODE ISLAND QUEEN ANNE MAPLE HIGHBOY IN

Catalog: Day 2
 Lot 941 Image

Lot 941: RARE BRANDED PAIR OF LEFT AND RIGHT BOSTON
Wonderful! One could hardly want to find a better pair of Boston andirons, for these are marked by the maker John Molineux. The andirons are of the classical period -- that is to say, c. 1820-50.

Catalog: Day 2
 Lot 946 Image

Lot 946A: QUAKER SILK WEDDING QUILT
I like the coloring and pattern of this Quaker silk wedding quilt made c. 1830-40. It is backed with homespun linen and it is in good condition.

Catalog: Day 2
 Lot 1550 Image

Lot 1550: IMPORTANT AND RARE LABELED HUNT BOARD
Here is a masterpiece of Victorian furniture made in America. This work deserves the attention of a major collector or a museum curator in search of Victoriana. Superb-- indeed, outstanding carving distinguishes this work by Alexander Roux of New York City. The piece bears the maker's label.

Catalog: Day 3
 Lot 1558 Image

Lot 1558: RINALDO DE RINALDI (Italian 1793-1873)
What a fine example of Italian marble carving at mid nineteenth century this is. It was made and signed in Rome by Rinaldo De Rinaldi (1793-1873) in 1852 when Americans were making the grand tour, many American sculptors were making their careers there as sculptors and as Nathaniel Hawthorne was writing his famous work, the Romance of Monte Bene, or The Marble Fawn. This image of The Pensive Shepherdess is life size and was recently discovered in an old warehouse in New Hampshire.

Catalog: Day 3
 Lot 1635 Image

Lot 1635: ATTRIBUTED TO HIRAM POWERS (American
The attribution of this marble ideal bust of a classical female to the American sculptor Hiram Powers certainly deserves attention. At present there is a superb exhibition of works by Powers at the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. A wonderful catalogue of that exhibition was produced by Lynne D. Ambrosini and Rebecca A. G. Reynolds, Guest Curator of the exhibition. Rebecca was once a staff member of the Department of American Decorative Arts and Sculpture Department at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Only a few days remain before the Powers exhibition closes on August 12. Get a copy of the catalogue and come to your own conclusions regarding this marble. In any case, it is a beautiful work even though the surface is somewhat weathered.

Catalog: Day 3
 Lot 1689 Image

Lot 1689: FINE GOTHIC VICTORIAN HIGHLY CARVED AND BURLED
Fine quality carving enhances this superb Victorian standing desk or lecturn that is made of burled walnut. The entry states that the work was made either in New York or Philadelphia.

Catalog: Day 3
 Lot 1694 Image

Lot 1694: GOTHIC VICTORIAN CARVED WALNUT ADJUSTABLE
I'm intrigued with this attractive walnut adjustable portfolio stand in the Gothic Revival - Late Victorian period. That it is walnut suggests to me that this portfolio stand was made in the U.S. c. 1870.

Catalog: Day 3
 Lot 1857 Image

Lot 1857: AMERICAN MT. WASHINGTON GLASS AND SILVER-PLATE
A delightful and original design for a covered sugar bowl made by the Mt. Washington Glass works of New Bedford.
