Here is a good camera for someone who loves to make fine photographs on negatives. It is a classic Graphlex view camera with case. Less expensive than a good digital camera and a lot more fun if the person likes to do darkroom processing. In the 1950s, this was the top of the line photographic workhorse.

I like the look of this c. 1780 Chinese export famille rose plate that is beautifully painted. It is 9 inches in diameter.

Lot 5671: EARLY VERTICAL STEAM ENGINE WITH ALCOHOL
Many steam engine toys that run on alcohol burners are offered in this auction. They are wonderful. Look at them all -- especially Lot 5682. You will need a steam engine with leather straps to power this set-up of machine tools. The vertical steam engine of Lot 5671 is my favorite.

Lot 5684: BLUE & WHITE OVERSHOT COVERLET REVERSIBLE
Summer is a good time to acquire overshot coverlets of this sort. This one and another in Lot 5685 both have pine tree borders. Buy both for a near pair with Lot 5685 just a little larger.

I am not certain that this diamond ring and earrings or earclips of this lot were made to match the Tahitian pearl necklace of Lot 9021. Even if not, they would probably look very good together.

I am partial to beautiful pearl necklaces. This one with Tahitian silver-grey pearls especially appeals. Length of the necklace is about 41.5 cm.

Chalcedony is a beautiful milky greyish-white quartz with crystals arranged in parallel lines. The stone was believed to have mystical or magical properties. This stone is a stunning oval cabochon of 16.40 ct., mounted in gold with side diamonds. Very appealing!

I acquired a chair just like this rocker designed by Charles & Ray Eames some years ago for the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts. This is a classic modern design that introduced fabrication with plastics into American furniture through the manufacturer Herman Miller. Lots 28 and 37 are variants on a bent laminated wooden chair designed by Charles & Ray Eames that is incredibly comfortable. Lot 37 is covered with cowhide. I own a "DCW" chair just like Lot 28. I acquired the prototype model for it for the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston from Edward Wormley, a friend of Charles Eames (For an example of Wormley's design, see lot 195). George Nakashima worked in New Hope, PA., where his daughter Mira continues his practice. I acquired a half a dozen pieces from George for visitor seating at the Museum of Fine Arts in the early 1980s.

Alexander Wilson's images of American birds are a bit stiff, but charming. The efforts of this artist, who died young, came before that of Audubon and was assisted by Lucien Bonaparte who was also a student of American birds. This work, printed in London and Edinburgh in 1832, comes in 3 vols with 97 hand-colored engraved plates.

An earlier painting tradition than the foregoing is represented in this landscape of 1871 made by the same artist, Johann Gottfried Steffan who paints the Gebirgslandschaft not out in the open but in his studio in Munich. The image effectively conveys the power of nature in its majestic depiction of storm clouds above a rushing cascade of water over rocks in a canyon.

The artist Carl Liner (1871-1946) in this image of water spilling over rocks has carefully observed the beauty of the variety of colors in the water in ways impossible to represent working within the studio as in the previous painting made by Johann Steffan.

One of these three goblets was presented to Capt. Thomas Sands by those who were with him during a trip on the Philip Allen, Aug. 1858. It seems that in the 19th century it was a custom to present a ships captain with a silver vessel at the end of a voyage in gratitude for safe passage. These are all handsome goblets.

Lot 1012: Isaac Israaels. Two Drawings.
Here is an attractive opportunity to acquire sketches and lithographs by Isaac Israaels (Dutch 1865-1934), whose oil paintings command large sums of money.

Lot 1036: Alexander Stirling Calder. Star Maiden.
Beautiful! This standing "Star Maiden" in bronze stands 54 inches tall (with base). It is the work of Alexander Stirling Calder (American, 1870-1945), whose great fountain at the intersection of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and 19th Street is an impressive sight. The bronze offered here was made for the Panama Pacific International Exposition and it was copyrighted in 1914. The sculptor was the father of Alexander Caldwell (of mobile fame), and son of the sculptor who made the figure of William Penn that stands atop Philadelphia's City Hall.

Lot 1106: Contemporary Aboriginal Art.
Many impressive aboriginal paintings from Australia are offered in this exhibition. Compare this 20th century example with the others and select your own preferences. Lot 1111 also appeals to me very much!

Lot 1295: Bessie Potter Vonnoh: Bronze Butterflies
This 13 1/4" high bronze figure of a young girl was made by the sculptor Bessie Potter Vonnoh (1872-1955). It is a beautiful work worthy of a museum or an important private collection. Graceful lines and a mood of reverie distinguishes this work.

Copper work by "Dirk Van Erp" is highly sought after today. This work bears his windmill mark. It is dated c. 1911. It bears the characteristic mica shade and hammered copper sides. It stands an impressive 17 1/4" high. A related work was displayed in the Museum of Fine Arts exhibition--" The Art that is Life: The Arts and Crafts Movement in America. "

Lot 2012: Chinese Brown-Glazed Dish. Qing Dynasty.
This finely crafted Chinese brown-glazed chrysanthemum shaped dish of 6 3/8" diameter comes from the Quing Dynasty. Blue six character mark under the base in a double ring: "Da Qing Yong Zhen Nian Zhi"

Lapis Lazuli must be a hard stone to carve. This 5 inch long carving of an ox with a shepherd on its back must date to the 18-19th century. It is an elegant and detailed work --placed on a carved wooden stand. [repaired]

Japanese bronze sculpture often is finished to perfection with beautiful chased detail as in this gilt bronze monkey of 16/17th century. Additionally, it is an expressive and alert-looking sculpture.

This brilliantly executed image of a lone fisherman is attributed to Chinese artist Jiang ZhaoHe (1904-1986). There are poems inscribed on the upper right and the work is dated in the Spring, 1983.

Lot 2290: Chinese ink painting Li Shan (1686 -?)
This is a very old Chinese hanging scroll in ink and color on xuan paper. The painter is Li Shan (1696--?). {Some damage as might be expected for its age to upper hanging, wear, crack} The stork image or cranes on the pine tree is mellow and appealing.

Lot 73: Kasyn, Canadian, wc, farm landscape in winter
This bleak winter farm landscape is a watercolor by John Kasyn (Canadian, 1926-) who certainly captured the lonesome quality of a snow fence that disappears over the horizon in convergent perspective to merge with a dark winter sky.

Lot 74: Raffin, Canadian, tempera, Purple Finch
Luke Raffin (Canadian, 1955-) certainly knows how to paint birds convincingly with egg tempera on art board as attested by this charming image of a purple finch

Two bronzes are worth serious consideration in this auction. This genre piece by Alfred Laliberte (Canadian 1878-1953) and the bronze of a woman with a mop in Lot 78.

Painted very softly and skillfully is this image of a cluster of hanging grapes in a greenhouse by the British watercolorist Thomas M. Lindsay who exhibited between 1870 and 1910.

Lot 118: Houser, American, 15 assorted prints
I have no doubt that the acquisition of 15 assorted prints by the American Lowell D.Houser (1902-1971) will yield a highly satisfactory number of stunning works. The one pictured seems to be an expressive woodcut.

Lot 124: Inuit print of hunting scene
Several Inuit prints are offered in this auction. This hunting scene by Juanisialuk Irqumia (1917-1977) is distinguished for its energy or vigor.

Lot 132: Cowan, Canadian, oil still life with lemons
This is not the only still life by Canadian Sue Cowan (1952-) offered in this auction. But it is a favorite of mine for its bold directness and intensity of contrasting colors. It is an oil on canvas measuring 16" x 16".
