DUTCH SCHOOL, (LATE 17TH-EARLY 18TH CENTURY), SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS

Lot 12: DUTCH SCHOOL, (LATE 17TH-EARLY 18TH CENTURY), SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS

by Freeman's

January 29, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: DUTCH SCHOOL (late 17th-early 18th century)/span SUSANNA AND THE ELDERS Pen and brown ink, brush and brown ink and brown washes on paper laid down 5 1/4 x 5 1/8 in. (13.3 x 13cm) [Lugt 1812] provenance: /spanDr. N. Meyer, 1775-1855. W. Drugulin, Leipzig, May 12, 1862. Private Collection, New Jersey.

Condition Report: Matted (with cloth covered mat) and framed, the sheet set 'floating' within the overmat. On the verso is stamped 'DR N. MEYER.' The sheet has two tape hinges at top edge verso affixed to undermat, and there are some extra - mostly small remnants - tape pieces on the verso. The image itself measures 13.2 x 13 cm, and the sheet measures 14.5 x 14.4 cm. The outer portion of the sheet - the bordered area - is actually a thin added border (a separate sheet) that is affixed to the drawing itself at the very outer edges. There appears to be a now flattened vertical crease through the center of the sheet, with a pinhead hole at center along this crease. This pinhole does not touch any figures. There is a tiny hole in sheet with some associated surface abrasion at upper left edge. The verso of the sheet has some brown discoloration at outer right edge, which is not visible on the front of the sheet. As seen in the catalogue photo, there are some areas with what appear to be thin gray washes and some darker spots in part of the lower right quadrant of sheet. It is possible that these grayish areas - at bottom left and a small area at center left - and the spots are intended by the artist. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. The absence of a condition statement does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. by Auctionata

January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €4,800 - €6,000

Description: Oil on canvas, relinedBelgium, 18th centuryPrestigious hunting still life with game birdDimensions: 66.5 x 91.5 cmOpulent hunting still life, which features a masterful painterly execution and lifelike rendering of the motifHunting still lives with game bird and wild game were part of the furnishing of every hunting lodge or country mansion. Since hunting was a privilege of the gentry, the presentation of those paintings showing the yield of such activities was vital for noble families for keeping up their reputation. Hunting still lives were regarded as embodiment of power and wealth. This still life displays a particularly good haul. It was probably painted around. After the principle ofAbundantia, various species of poultry are positioned on a table. In the background on the right hand side pigeons are positioned in a basket. In the foreground is a grey goose, woodcocks and several singing birds, including kingfishers. Furthermore, on the left hand side a fruit bowl is displayed, carrying pears, grapes and apples. The presence of the singing birds and the kingfishers shows the opulence of the gentry, because they do not serve as food, they are merely prestige objects symbolizing strength and superiority of mankind over nature. Characteristically for still lives, the colors are kept in dark shades and motifs are painted rich in detail and masterly naturalistic. The painting is in a good condition with slight signs of age and wear. The surface shows craquelure and several retouchings. The dimensions of the stretcher are 66.5 x 91.5 cm. (nlu) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
