Unique Collection of Items - Internment Camps of Etzel and Lehi Exiles in Africa - Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog

Lot 53: Unique Collection of Items - Internment Camps of Etzel and Lehi Exiles in Africa - Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog

by Kedem Public Auction House Ltd

October 29, 2014, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: Collection of items from Internment camps of Etzel and Lehi Exiles in Africa - letters to chief Rabbinate in Eretz Israel, an issue of "BeGalut Asmara" ["In Asmara Exile"], drawing of Sembel internment camp; telegram to the chief rabbi of Eretz Israel, Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog, concerning detainees in Kenya. Asmara, Gilgil and Haifa, 1946-1948. 1. Handwritten letter from the representative of Sembel camp detainees, Dov HaLevi Milman, to the Chief Rabbinate in Eretz Israel. Asmara, (February 22, 1946).The letter deals with an incident that took place on January 17, 1946, when two detainees in the Sembel camp were killed by fire shot by soldiers of the Sudanese Guard. At first, Milman thanks for the letter of condolences that was received from Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Isaac HaLevi Herzog; he continues with a detailed description of the situation in the camp since the incident: "the wild guards, when they realized that the murderers were not punished but their deeds were justified... now they continue and abuse us...we request your immediate intervention...protests will not revive the dead". Leaf, 25.5 cm. Folding marks and creases. Dark spots. Torn in its upper part (no text omission). The shooting incident in Sembel happened after a conflict between one of the detainees, Eliyahu Ezra, and one of the Sudanese soldiers, a conflict during which the soldier shot Ezra and injured him. When the guards refused to open the camp's gates and transfer Ezra to the first aid station, the detainees tried to break through the fence and the guards started shooting. The incident ended with the death of two detainees (Eliyahu Ezra and Shaul Galili) and with other detainees being injured. The Jewish Yishuv in Eretz Israel responded furiously to this incident, and the camp's detainees requested the appointment of an investigation committee. About one month later, in order to calm matters, the British authorities permitted the Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel, Yitzhak Isaac HaLevi Herzog to visit the camp.2. Single leaf - drawing, drawn by hand, of the Sembel camp: dining room, kitchen, two barracks, "guard posts" and the "Negroes Residence". The locations in the camp where the detainees were injured and killed during the incident of January 1946, are marked. Includes a handwritten index for the various sites. The drawing was drawn on the reverse of a "Sniper Certificate" form, on behalf of the Royal Italian army. Leaf, 38 cm. Folding marks and creases. 3. "BeGalut Asmara" ["In Asmara Exile"], internment camp, Asmara, Eritrea. February 26, 1946. Issue no. 102.Single leaf, handwritten, in a newspaper format - coverage of the arrival of the Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel, rabbi Herzog, to Asmara; includes the "Reception Order". Written on the reverse of a "Sniper Certificate" on behalf of the Royal Italian Army. Leaf, 38 cm. Folding marks. Tear within one of the folding marks.4. Typewritten letter, signed by hand, from Haim David Kahana (detainees' rabbi in Gilgil camp, Kenya) to the Chief Rabbinate in Eretz Israel. February 11, 1948.Kahana describes in his letter the happenings in Gilgil and the tension between Kenya Authorities and the camp's representatives, and pleads the chief rabbis to act towards the return of the camp's prisoners to Eretz Israel. Leaf, 32 cm. Folding marks and creases. Filing holes and minor tears.5. Telegram sent to chief rabbi Herzog by Zvi Holinski from Haifa (handwritten), [1948]. "In view of the great danger to the lives of our children in Kenya...please use all of your influence amongst all the relevant authorities to return them to the country..." 18X14 cm. tears to margins.

He used the same, recurring symbols in his painted and printed works, as well as in his mosaics and in the windows and stage-sets designed by him. As one of the most important artists of the 20th Century the 'painter-poet' gave Expressionism a new character. After his first education at private art schools in Saint Petersburg he went to Paris in 1910 where he was involved in the avant-garde art scene. Apart from that, he was also inspired by visits to the salons, exhibitions and museums of this exciting city. After the First World War which Chagall spent in Russia he went to Berlin and later returned to Paris. Even after he had immigrated to America in 1941 he returned to his 'ville lumière' Paris in 1948. In his lifetime Marc Chagall received many commissions whose preparation and execution took him around the world. Already during his lifetime he was honored with numerous international exhibitions, retrospectives and art prizes. (fea) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
