by Alexander Historical Auctions | Alexander Autographs

February 11, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Chesapeake City, MD, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: PRESENTATION WARDEN'S BILLY CLUB FROM ALCATRAZ A great relic from the notorious federal prison on Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay, a wood "billy club" presented to Associate (Deputy) Warden Joseph B. Latimer. The 22 1/4" long wood club bears two metal shields tacked thereto, the larger bearing an engraving: "ASSOC. WARDEN JOS. B. LATIMER U.S. PENITENTIARY ALCATRAZ, CAL. 1954", with the smaller shield reading: "U.S.B.O.P. 1953". The club bears a grooved grip and leather strap attached at bottom. The lettering on the plaques leads us to believe that the plaques, and possibly the entire presentation, were made on the island. Latimer supervised the search for at least two escapees from the famous "escape-proof" prison.

The Silk Road by HongNian Zhang

Lot 61S: The Silk Road by HongNian Zhang

by Artistic Holdings Company

January 27, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Las Vegas, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $1,500 - $1,880

Description: The Silk Road by HongNian Zhang - Edition Size: 35 - Giclee on Canvas - Signed & Numbered Dimensions: 40 x 60 Release Date: 2-2008 ???.The arts of China have held the Western world in awe for centuries. The captivating images and incredible talents through the ages have intrigued and fascinated viewers. A culmination of these inherent traits is evident in the outstanding works created by HongNian Zhang. As an internationally known artist working in the Western academic tradition, Zhang enjoys tremendous success with his powerful and exquisite works. Born in Nanjing, China, Zhang?s artistic training began at age nine. From the beginning, it was obvious the young man was an outstanding talent. As a top student in his mid-teens, the artist was accepted to the Central Art Academy Affiliated High School in Beijing. After graduation, however, the Cultural Revolution closed the schools. At this point, Zhang was sent with his class to do forced labor for four years in a remote countryside of China. Returning to Beijing in 1973, the talented artist became the youngest member of the Beijing Art Academy. In 1979, Zhang was, again, the youngest member ever elected to the All China Artists Association. Leading the "Scar? art movement, an important, artistic period in China exposing the painful memories of the Cultural Revolution, three of Zhang?s paintings were acquired for the Chinese National Art Gallery?s permanent collection. In 1984, the artist was accepted to the highly acclaimed and selective MFA program at the Central Art Academy. In 1985, Zhang came to America to continue his study in art and was represented by New York?s Grand Central Gallery. The artist participated in the gallery?s acclaimed 1986 show, Realism from China, the first exhibit to introduce Chinese oil painting to the Western world. Zhang continued painting in the realism tradition, but also expanded his subjects from Tibetan to a wide range including Chinese and American historical paintings and contemporary American subject matter. The talented young man developed a passion for historical painting at an early age. Envisioning scenes of struggles between the good and the bad, these works helped satisfy his romantic feeling for the distant past. The artist is well known for his large-scale, epic, historical paintings; two early titles are "Farewell, Premier Zhou? and "Before the Long March.? Coming to America had a profound impact on the artist?s great success with gallery shows. The market for his large-scale historical paintings took more time. However, Zhang knew his time had come when he was contacted by the National Geographic Society to create historical paintings about China. Four of these paintings are included in the Society?s permanent collection. Returning to his ancestral roots to create these works, Zhang introduced the glory of China?s ancient civilization to the world. The artist incorporates his Asian spirit and many youthful dreams in his paintings today. His works are often complex scenes with dramatic movement and orchestration in a symphonic presentation of life. Zhang?s works have appeared in many publications including National Geographic, Fine Art Connoisseur, and Artist magazines. He also taught for several years at the New York Academy of Art and at the Woodstock ( New York) School of Art. The artist and his wife, Lois Woolley, co-wrote The Yin Yang of Painting, which presents his unique artistic approach and style for oil painting. Painting from memories of a sometimes tumultuous past that bring forth an amazing talent to create stories for today?s world, Zhang knows he has come full circle. Join this artistic storyteller on his unique journey.

Swans in Flight

Lot 27: Swans in Flight

by Copley Fine Art Auctions

February 12, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Charleston, SC, USA

Estimated Price: $25,000 - $35,000

Description: Frank Weston Benson, one of the Ten American Painters and a leading influence in the Boston School of American Impressionism, was born in Salem, Massachusetts, on March 24, 1862. In his youth, Benson was a gifted athlete and excelled at boxing, sailing, and tennis. Growing up along the extensive marshes surrounding his native Salem, Benson learned to hunt and fish at an early age. Benson loved nature and birds in particular. He wanted to combine his love for birds and his love for art by pursuing a career as an ornithological illustrator in the manner of John James Audubon (1785-1851). As a child he spent many hours at the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard and Benson's mother, who was herself a painter, encouraged him in this pursuit. In 1880, Benson enrolled at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. He studied with the school's founding teachers, Otto Grundmann (1844-1890) and Frederick Crowninshield (1845-1918). Among his classmates were Willard Metcalf (1858-1925), William Bicknell (1860-1947), Edmund C. Tarbell (1862-1938), and Joseph Lindon Smith (1863-1950). Benson learned quickly and was recognized as a particularly gifted student. In 1882, while still attending classes at the Museum School, Benson began to teach free evening drawing classes in Salem. In 1885 Benson rented a painting studio in Salem. He began to exhibit at the Boston Art Club and the National Academy of Design in New York, receiving much critical acclaim and numerous awards. After his marriage to Ellen Peirson in 1888, he taught at the Boston Museum School with his friend Edmund Tarbell intermittently until 1930. The year 1898 was the turning point in Benson's career. He joined a number of other leading painters from New York and Boston, including Tarbell, Childe Hassam (1859-1935), and J. Alden Weir (1852-1919) to form the Ten American Painters. This group of radical avant-garde painters, mostly working in the French Impressionist style, rejected and resigned from the National Academy and the Society of American Artists to exhibit independently and without juries. Benson exhibited in all of the Ten's annual exhibitions, which were held for twenty years, to critical acclaim. This watercolor of swans displays Benson's expertise in the medium, as well as in depicting waterfowl. With its classic composition and gentle colors, this work shows the artist as his technique shifts from tighter brushwork to a style that incorporates broader, more expressive strokes. This watercolor captures the artist as he combines his masterly painting technique with his life-long passion for birds and the outdoors.

Antonio Alonso Martinez, Mixed Media on Canvas, „España

Lot 124: Antonio Alonso Martinez, Mixed Media on Canvas, „España", 2012

by Auctionata

January 27, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,400 - €3,000

Description: Mixed media; including oil, acrylic, fluorescent paint and polyester on canvasSpain, 2012Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963) - Portuguese-Spanish painter Signed and dated on verso 'Matinez 2012'; also titled 'ESPAÑA'Dimensions: 81 x 65.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, SpainVery good conditionImpressive portrait of Picasso painted by the famous 'Martinez the Killer'; his works fetch up to €12,000 at international auctionsThe present portrait depicts Pablo Picasso and is a provocative and very characteristic painting by the Portuguese-Spanish artist Antonio Alonso Martinez. Head and chin of the iconic artist are bathed in red, while the middle part of his face and the background appear in bright yellow. The colors immediately evoke associations with the stripes of the Spanish national flag, which are ultimately supported by the inscription 'ESPAÑA' at the lower left. The message of the picture seems to identify Picasso as a child or even a hero of his country. But Picasso's keen view irritates and closer inspection of the painting shows that his pupils are even emphasized by white pinheads pierced through the canvas. Here, the portrait impressively unveils how Martinez uses the method of alienating his sitters in order to express allusions, possible questions or even criticism raised against the depicted persons, or at least against our perceptions of those people. The painting signed and dated on verso 'Martinez 2012' and also titled 'ESPAÑA'. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of wear. The size of the depiction is equal to the overall framed dimensions of 81 x 65.5 cm.Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963)Martinez was born in Portugal in 1963 and studied painting in Lisbon. In his youth he was present, when his best friend was murdered at the age of eighteen. This shocking experience deeply influenced his later artistic output, since his portraits often deal with mortality. In 2011 Martinez moved to Spain, where he still lives and works. Self Portrait with Three Setters

Lot 35: Self Portrait with Three Setters

by Copley Fine Art Auctions

February 12, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Charleston, SC, USA

Estimated Price: $20,000 - $40,000

Description: This rare self-portrait depicts Edmund Osthaus himself cleaning his double barrel shotgun while three eager setters look on. It is one of only two known self-portraits that have surfaced in the last twenty-five years, and one of only a handful of figurative works by the artist. Painted in 1911, it was likely reproduced by the DuPont Company for a calendar. The painting is accompanied by a signed photograph of the artist, inscribed "To my good friend H.W. Lancashire, Faithfully Yours, Edmund Osthaus." Herbert W. Lancashire, the grandfather of the current owner, was a prominent businessman in Toledo, Ohio, where Osthaus led the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts and founded the Toledo Art Museum.Edmund Henry Osthaus was born in Hildesheim, Germany in 1858, the son of a prosperous farmer who subsequently emigrated to Toledo, Ohio. Osthaus studied at the Royal Academy of the Arts in Dusseldorf from 1874 to 1882 with Andreas Muller, Peter Jansen, E. von Gebhardt, Ernst Deger, and wildlife and landscape painter Christian Kroner. In 1883, after studying painting for six years, Edmund Osthaus became an instructor at the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts. He served as the director from 1886-1893, refining his painting technique and pursuing his passions: hunting and fishing. In 1893 Osthaus dedicated his full attention to painting, shooting, and field trials. He was a charter member of the National Field Trial Association established in Newton, North Carolina, in 1895. "Edmund Osthaus followed field trials from the fall prairie chicken trials in Canada to the important quail trials in the South in mid-winter, judging, sketching, and sometimes entering his dogs. He was a handsome, powerfully built man," and his artistic talent combined with his love of dogs enabled him to capture the essence of the focused working dog while depicting them in precise anatomical detail."Any painter who paints for shooting men had better be a shooting man himself, for no one is more jealously critical of detail than the man who knows guns and dogs and game... Edmund Osthaus, who trained and shot over his own setters and pointers, transformed oil paint into dog flesh quivering under the stress of a point."
