Estimated Price: CAD20,000 - CAD30,000

Description: ALBERT HENRY ROBINSON, R.C.A.SKATING AFTER SCHOOLoil on panelsigned 11.25 ins x 13 ins; 26.7 cms x 33 cms Provenance:Dominion Gallery, MontrealPrivate Collection, TorontoLiterature:Jennifer C. Watson, Albert H. Robinson: The Mature Years, Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery, Kitchener-Waterloo, 1982, pages 14-18.Note:Best known as a painter of winter, Robinson’s reputation lies in his distinction as a gifted colourist. While often associated with the Group of Seven, Robinson never became a member. Nonetheless, writes Watson: “He surely contributed to the development of Canadian painting and the formation of a national style.” Like the Group, Robinson sketched directly from nature and considered this a critical source of inspiration. Using Winsor Newton oils on birch bark panel, without priming or varnish, Robinson worked rapidly, by some estimates producing a finished sketch in under three hours. Skating After School is not dated nor have we suggested a date. In her 1982 catalogue, Watson alludes to the fact that first-hand documentation for the artist is scarce. However, most of Robinson’s best work was done prior to 1933. It was then that he suffered a heart attack, “with ensuing complications and painted little thereafter.”

Wallace R. Hester [

by Graham Budd Auctions

May 18, 2015, 10:30 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £3,000 - £5,000

Description: Wallace R. Hester ["WH"] (1866-1923) PORTRAIT OF ARTHUR FREDERICK BETTINSON, AMATEUR BOXER AND FOUNDER OF THE NATIONAL SPORTING CLUB signed with initials WH, a pencil, black chalk and watercolour heightened in white, being an original artwork for a Vanity Fair print published 1911, 46.5 by 27cm., 18 1/4 by 10 1/2in., mounted, framed & glazed Arthur Frederick Bettinson, nicknamed “Peggy”, was born in Marylebone, London, in 1862. He was crowned British lightweight boxing champion in 1882. In 1887 Bettinson opened the Pelican Club in Gerrard Street which quickly became an attractive entertainment venue for wealthy gentlemen intent on hard drinking and gambling. The club boasted the largest boxing hall in London and was the secen for many bouts by the most illustrious fighters of the day. The behavior of the club's patrons known as the “Pelicans” whose rowdy behavior would spill onto the local streets eventually led to its decline and bankruptcy when the Pelican Club's licence was rebuked. Not to be deterred, Bettinson set about opening a new club determined to have the finest respectable reputation as a sporting and entertainment venue. Together with business partner John Fleming, he founded the National Sporting Club on 5th March 1891 at 43 King Street, Covent Garden. The club boasted lavish and impressive décor, electric lighting and fine dining facilities which attracted a membership in the region of 1,300. Top boxers of the day who fought at the NSC included Joe Walcott, Tommy Ryan, Jimmy Wilde, Ted “Kid” Lewis, Georges Carpentier and Kid McCoy. The National Sporting Club and Bettinson in particular did much to formalise boxing as a properly organized professional sport and improved its reputation in many observer's minds from disdain to respectability. In 1909 it standardised divisions and weight limits before authorizing British title bouts and arranged for the presentation of the famous Lonsdale Belts, the solid gold championship prize belts donated by Lord Lonsdale who was the first President of the NSC. Bettinson continued for many years to be the sport's leading manager, match-maker, promoter and referee; as well as a writer and contributor In 1926 “Peggy” suffered a heart attack whilst travelling in continental Europe. He returned home but died in his Hampstead home on Christmas Eve and was buried at Highgate Cemetery at a well attended funeral service. Provenance: The John Franks Collection of original watercolours for Vanity Fair, Christie's South Kensington, 14th December 2005, lot 57.

“Horrors of War” Trading Card Collection.

by Profiles in History

June 11, 2015, 11:00 AM PST

Calabasas, CA, USA

Estimated Price: $8,000 - $12,000

Description: 168. “Horrors of War” Trading Card Collection. The 1938 Horrors of War is one of the most famous trading card sets of all time. They were produced by Philadelphia-based Gum Inc., which later became Bowman. Bubble-gum was a new craze among the nation’s youth in the 1930s and card companies offered a stick of gum packaged in wax packs of cards. The Horrors of War cards were controversial from their first release and remain today the most famous and valuable of all non-sport sets. Several years ago a complete set in overall near-mint to mint condition sold for over $700,000. The cards depict graphic and unspeakable scenes of horror associated with the wars and conflicts going on in the world during this time frame. These include scenes from the brutal Japanese invasion of China, the Spanish Civil War, the Italian invasion of Ethiopia, the Russian and Japanese conflict in Manchuria and Germany's annexation of the Sudentenland from Czechoslovakia in 1938 that was the beginning of World War II in Europe. Gum, Inc. became like a news organization and hired a staff of artists (George Moll Agency), designers, copywriters, and researchers who reported on these conflicts as journalists and presented factual reporting on the backs of the cards. The company's slogan, “To know the HORRORS OF WAR is to want PEACE”, was printed on the back of each card. President Franklin D. Roosevelt referenced these cards to explain the horror of what actually went on in war-ravished countries and some Senator’s resented his “bubblegum diplomacy.” Life magazine also featured this card set in their 9 May 1938 issue (a copy of this issue is included with the lot). The cards offered in this lot are in very good condition considering they are now 77 years old. This lot features 196 cards (out of the total issue of 288). 111 of the 196 cards being offered are encapsulated and graded by PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator), the gold standard and #1 third-party authenticator in the world for card grading. Of these, there are (40) “high grade” cards: (1) card is PSA 9 or mint condition; (10) cards are PSA 8 or near mint-mint; and (29) are PSA 7 or near-mint. The balance of the graded cards are mostly PSA 6 or Excellent. The ungraded cards are mostly clean in both fronts and backs. Specific card highlights include: card #1 Marco Polo Bridge, first skirmish between the Japanese and Chinese – a very rare card to find in any condition; #88 Human Hands and #99 Ghoulish Dogs are 2 of the most famous cards; #283 Hitler Threatens and #286 Chamberlain meets Hitler are 2 of the 3 Hitler cards in the set and are highly sought after by collectors who don’t even collect this set. Also included are (7) rare promotional cards which were randomly placed in packs, that were either printed at the factory or hand-stamped (rarer) offering either a “Free” pack of cards or a chance to win one of “1000 cash prizes to the 1000 children who send us the neatest lists of 240 correct titles.” $8,000 - $12,000

Pablo Picasso, Jeune Fille. Verso: Étude pour Saltimbanque, 1905

by Lempertz

May 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Cologne, Germany

Estimated Price: €150,000 - €160,000

Description: Unsigned. - Inscribed "5" in pencil on the front left. Pages 5 and 10 of a carnet album by Pablo Picasso, Paris 1905 (Carnet 024). The original sketchbook from Pablo Picasso's estate - a “pocket book” that can be dated to “3 de Mayo 1905” based on a note on one of the sheets - originally contained 51 pages. It was broken up, the present double page is part of it. The sketches and notes of this early sketchbook from 1905 are fascinating with regard to the theme of the “saltimbanques”, which featured motifs from the world of the circus and acrobats. These define Picasso's so-called Rose Period. Thus, the sketch of the slender youth seen in profile - one of the most beautiful from the sketchbook's series of six all around-studies of an elevated seated figure - recognisably prefigures what will return in the artist's paintings and prints of that year. In “Arlequin assis” we find not only the type but also the characteristic pose of the figure taken up once again (see comparative illus.). Günter Metken wrote: “The year 1905 [...] is dominated by the theme of the acrobats. Several times a week Picasso and his friends went to the Cirque Médrano, at the foot of Montmartre, and chatted with the performers, sometimes inviting them over for a visit. The travelling circus people - who, like the artist, were without a home - define his compositions. [...] Their performances in front of alternating and merely suggested sceneries freed Picasso from the convention of having to conceive a solid pictorial space featuring accessory objects and local colour. His emphasis is on the pose and grouping of the figures, on their three-dimensional setup. [...] The first notations already attest to his distance from naturalism and genre: attentive looking and forming, no copying. They deal with a seated boy or youth, who is circled around as a 'sculpture'; in doing so, the anatomical details are less significant than the pose. The artist works very summarily from the model: abbreviation of forms, slender angularity and a somewhat asexual Gothic quality, which encompassed many of his figures following the revaluation of medieval art among his circle of friends in Barcelona. In the narrow head with its high forehead, the column-like neck, and the vertical - seemingly load-bearing - planting of the arms, we seem to sense the statics of a cathedral, at the same time, however, the bodily structure of early Greek figures of young men as well. Here Picasso practises riders' poses for the etching Die Wasserstelle (Geiser 10) [...]. In addition, the seated figure in the sketchbook can be typologically recognised in several famous works of this period, such as Akrobaten mit der Kugel, Akrobatenfamilie, Akrobat und junger Harlequin, etc. Each time, Picasso begins with the statuesque individual figures without relation to one another, and this provides these works with their composite character, held together only by the circus framework as a loosely binding element.” (Günter Metken, 3 de Mayo 1905: Ein Skizzenbuch aus der Rosa Periode, in: Pablo Picasso, Sammlung Marina Picasso, exhib. cat. Cologne 1981, pp. 36/37) By contrast, the charming little girl with the finely drawn profile and the blue skirt, sheet 10 of the sketchbook, comes from a series of four drawings in colour, also in the sketchbook, a “portrait sequence with profile views of four different girls' figures” - admittedly there is no recognisable connection with the “saltimbanques”, but as a figurine it is related to them stylistically and in terms of expression (cf. E. A. Carmean Jr, Die Gaukler, Skizzenbuch Nr. 35 von 1905, in: Je suis le cahier, op. cit., p. 14). A comment from Fernande Olivier's memoirs about the Bateau-Lavoir may refer to this bold young model: “Pablo has brought back to the studio a young girl found I don't know where whom he is going to do as Joan of Arc. Bizarre-looking rather than beautiful with bright red hair and large, rather coarse but good features. She started posing two days ago. But last night I realized she must have been crawling with lice, as both of us have caught them.” (cited in Richardson, op. cit., p. 342) These lines could not more appropriately characterise Paris's creative bohemian community in those years. Total dimensions including fold 14.4 x 16.9 cm (single sheet each approx. 14.4 x 7.5 cm) 1905

Condition Report: The sheet with traces of the binding thread to the center, the perforation of the left slightly loose. - The margins of the page mounted to the mat on verso, the front exposed. - On the reverse of the carnet sheet the left side with the trace of a female head in profile facing left, with faint colouring.

Campbell’s commissioned projects include Following Room at the Whitney Museum of Art (2007) and Following Room (Trento) at Manifesta 7, Trento, Italy (2008); Potential Store Fronts for the Public Art Fund, New York (2007).
