At A Young Age, Hansel Demonstrated His Artistic Ability; Throughout His Life, He Never Swayed From His Dream Of Becoming An Artist. As Long As The Artist Can Recall, His Love Of Wildlife And The Outdoors Have Inspired His Work So He May Share His Vision Of Nature?s Wonders. The World Hansel Paints Is Not Always The World He Sees. At The Age Of Twelve, He Was Diagnosed With A Degenerative Eye Condition, Which Has Left Him Legally Blind. Mastering His Visual Limitations, He Has Learned To Create Beautifully-detailed Images With Magnification And Low-vision Aids. Working Only One Or Two Inches Away From The Canvas, Hansel Painstakingly Paints In The Details Of A Work, While Forming In His Mind A Clear Picture Of The Finished Painting. Hansel Also Relies On His Camera To Capture His Ideas And Bring Them Into Focus. He Uses Photographs To Bring The Landscapes And The Wildlife Models Back To His Studio. At This Stage Of Starting A Painting, He Enlarges The Photographs, If Necessary, To See Them More Clearly. Amazingly, The Artist Then Gazes Through His Glasses And Commences His First Brush Strokes As His Painting Comes To Life A Few Square Inches At A Time. Hansel?s Visual Challenges Require Him To Spend More Time On A Painting Adding His Details Than Many Artists?.sometimes Working Four Months On A Single Canvas. Hansel Wants His Artwork To Be Judged On Its Own Merit, Not On The Basis Of An Artist With A Visual Impairment. U.S. Model 1805 Flintlock Pistol By Harpers Ferry

Lot 203: U.S. Model 1805 Flintlock Pistol By Harpers Ferry

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $15,000 - $20,000

Description: .54 caliber, 10 1/16" round barrel. The lockplate is properly marked with large federal eagle over "US" ahead of cock and "HARPERS / FERRY / 1806" in vertical arc behind cock. The barrel shows excellent deep inspectors marks including "US" and "(eaglehead) / P" both in sunken ovals along with the serial number "53". This rare and desirable early dated 1805 pistol appears to have been very neatly reconverted to flintlock from a drum and nipple conversion. The lock, cock and frizzen are all assembly marked "IIII" and all lock components match perfectly in color with a single "V" stamped on inside of lockplate. All markings in metal remain crisp and clear. The barrel retains an even silver gray color showing an old light cleaning leaving some scattered light pitting present. The lock is slightly darker and shows a couple small patches of light pitting, again with crisp marks and edges. The walnut stock rates very good showing a mix of original finish and some old added light oil with a still visible oval cartouche. The stock edges remain well defined and the stock maker's initials "O" and "B" are still legible on front side of the butt. There is a superbly executed repaired sliver along the top of the lock that is almost undetectable and with just a little softening of the edges, likely would be undetectable. All brass furniture bears a pleasing mellow patina and was likely cleaned long ago and has regained a pleasing color. The hickory ramrod may be an old replacement but it is properly brass tipped and looks very nice. This pistol is listed in Hudak's book as being sold in a Christie's auction on May 14, 1987, page #47, item #125. These early dated Harper's Ferry pistols are difficult to obtain in any condition, this particular example is very fine overall. (16558-3) {ANTIQUE} [Dr. Joseph A. Murphy Collection]

by Amoskeag Auction Co

August 2, 2014, 9:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: 256 Newton, 24" barrel with a bright near excellent bore showing light fouling in the grooves. The barrel and receiver show 90% original blue with the loss due to silvering at the muzzle and on the front sight barrel band. A few light usage marks and spots of pinprick oxidation are loosely scattered across the surface, and remain unobtrusive. The rifle features double set triggers, with the triggerguard and floorplate showing about 80-85% original blue just starting to tone to mottled brown. Silvering is visible at the edges and surrounding the floorplate hinge. The bolt body remains in the white, with original blue showing on the extractor, bolt sleeve and bolt handle. The bolt handle features a knob with checkered panel, and shows about 50% original blue now wearing to pewter. The pistolgrip stock remains in near excellent condition, showing strong checkering with a few rounded points and light soiling. Minor usage marks are scattered across the wood surface, with the left of the buttstock showing a light abrasion 1" in length and several light impressions. The sharp edge of the carved schnabel forend shows some wear and minor chipping. A blued steel gripcap is present, as is a blued steel buttplate now wearing to pewter. Originally smooth in surface, the buttplate now shows a covering pattern of parallel 1/8" hand punched lines serving to roughen the surface and clearly not original. The rifle is equipped with a barrel band mounted front blade sight, with a replacement simple flat steel sporting sight now mounted in the original rear sight barrel band. Weaver aluminum bases have been mounted to the matted top flats of both front and rear receiver rings. The original bolt mounted peep sight is present and remains in excellent condition. Overall a pleasing Newton that shows some use and could still be hunted today. (146520-3115) {C&R} [Richard "Stretch" Kennedy Collection]
