Mr. Lyon of Spalding" in Lincolnshire. 30"h. 25"w., in a 19th-century bird's-eye maple frame, 37"h. 32"w. The subject is almost certainly Reverend Stephen Lyon, a French Huguenot who served as president of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society from 1713 until his death in 1748. In the Society's archives is a reference, penned by the Archdeacon of Lincoln, to a portrait of Lyon in the collection of the Earl of Westmoreland at Apethorp in Northampton, in which the reverend is depicted as a "young Divine."
