Lyell, Charles - Principles of Geology, First Edition, 1830-32

Lot 20: Lyell, Charles - Principles of Geology, First Edition, 1830-32

by Albion Auctions

October 23, 2014, 6:00 PM GMT

Chesterfield, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £5,000 - £7,000

Description: "Principles of Geology, being an attempt to explain the former changes of the earth's surface, by references to causes now in operation" London: John Murray, 1830-32, 3 volumes, 8vo. xv, [1], 511; xii, 330, [2]; xxxi, [1], 398, 109pp., plus 4pp. publisher's advertisements. 11 plates, including 3 engraved frontispieces (2 hand-coloured), and 3 maps (2 folding, 2 hand-coloured), later half green morocco, old boards. First Edition. Lyell's Principles of Geology revolutionized the science of geology. The work had two major and controversial goals: First, to establish a strict uniformitarian theory of the earth based upon a knowledge of the existing causes and effects of geological change; and second, to give a specific meaning to the term geology; and establish its proper position relative to the other physical sciences. Lyell's work had profound influence upon Charles Darwin, who read the Principles aboard the Beagle. Not only did the work shape Darwin's understanding of geology, but its discussion of the problems of evolution stimulated Darwin's thinking on the subject. The first edition was published in an edition of 1,500 copies and sold for fifteen shillings a copy. Lyell received 200 guineas for the work. The title page of Vol. I indicates that the work was originally intended to be published in two volumes. Norman 1398. Greene, Geology in the 19th Century, pp. 70-76. Rudwick, The Meaning of Fossils, pp. 174-191. Ward & Carozzi, Geology Emerging, 1407. Wilson, Charles Lyell: The Years to 1841, pp. 146-47; 210. Frontis to Volume 1 foxed, as is the Map to volume 2. Small closed margin tear to plate 2, volume 3. Otherwise good.

Lg. Ancient Greek Bronze Phalanx Spear Head

Lot 54A: Lg. Ancient Greek Bronze Phalanx Spear Head

by ArtemisGallery LIVE

October 23, 2014, 9:00 AM MST

Erie , CO, USA

Estimated Price: $4,500 - $5,500

Description: 4th century BCE. Greek BRONZE PHALANX SPEAR HEAD from the time of Alexander the Great.  Authentic Ancient Greek weapons are extremely scarce on the commercial market and are far outnumbered by later Roman examples. A RARE opportunity to acquire such a piece of profound ancient history and military accomplishment.  It clearly was meant to be mounted on the end of a typical long phalanx spear pole based on its sheer enormity, far larger than typical hand-held Hoplite spears.   The size and broad willow leaf design to the blade is typical for Greek spears of this period.  Its coveted green mineralized patina is 100% ORIGINAL and the metal surfaces are impeccably preserved. The weapon still has its original attachment hole in the shaft where it would have been affixed to a long wooden pole. 17.7" (45 cm) in length. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

Condition Report: NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION OR FABRICATION. Professional cleaned and conserved.

Particularly striking are the golden accents on the ornamental and floral trims, which are etched on the figure of the eagle and the laurel wreaths. The fine grisaille paintings within the medallions, showing an antique-like profile picture of Friedrich II, the founder of the factory, and a putto flying over insignia, are also of particular note. The vase bears the underglaze blue scepter mark, the on-glaze red orb, the impressed number 1 M and the painter's mark IED to the underside, as well as the on-glaze black numbers 148/276 and 148/277 in the lid. The overall height, including the vase, is 34 cm.KPM - Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin The manufactory of KPM that was established in 1763 by Frederick the Great was based on three private companies that had tried for some time to produce porcelain in Berlin. The manufactory was located in Berlin Tiergarten since 1871. It took up the production of painted porcelain tiles under the direction of Professor Alexander Kips and made a huge profit. After the destruction of the manufactory during the Second World War, the Land of Berlin took over the company in 1988. Since 2006, the company has been owned by the private banker Jörg Woltmann. 5 Bottles 1977 Dalva Vintage Port

Lot 25: 5 Bottles 1977 Dalva Vintage Port

by Auctionata

November 11, 2014, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €320 - €400

Description: Five bottles of Dalva Vintage PortProduced by Da Silva1977 vintagePorto, PortugalOriginal filling quantity: 0.75 lFill level: Into NeckThis lot comprises five bottles of Dalva 1977 Vintage Port produced by Da Silva in Porto.Port is an absolute classic of the wine world that originates from the Douro Valley. Vines for red and white port grow on impressive slate terraces on the vertiginous, steep slopes along the Rio Douro. The history of the vine-growing region stretches far back into antiquity. Some of the archaic wine production methods of that time remain unchanged: in Lagares, for example, grapes are still pressed manually, by foot. Over 80 different vine types may be used for the wine - another archaic feature, namely genetic abundance in the vineyard instead of vine purity. Port itself only came about during the 17th century, when British wine merchants began looking for a strong, transportable wine. Due to this, the fermentation process of the wines was halted with strong brandy, thereby preserving its natural sweetness. The methods used in creating port have changed very little to this day. Port wines are very sweet early on and have a high alcohol and tannin content. They require a lot of time to refine their flavor, which accounts for the number of different ripening methods from which various port styles developed. The most important ripening method is Tawny: the finest Tawny is ripened in barrels for over 6 years, then bottled and sold. It stands out due to its fine aroma that ages well and contains hints of nut and almond. Vintage port remains the most prominent port style, however. These wines are only created during special years, from a single vintage. After maturing in a barrel for two to three years, they are bottled and sold. However, they are still a long way off their optimal maturity and require decades of storage. After about 30 to 40 years, the wines reach their peak, which lasts for many years. Great vintage ports transcend time and perishability thanks to their longevity.Port takes its name from the Portuguese city of Porto, which it has been associated with for hundreds of years. Traditionally, the most important port wine houses and merchants have been based here for centuries. Wines from the Douro valley are also brought here and stored and matured in the lodges of port houses in Villa Nova de Gaia. The fill levels are excellent (into neck). The labels and capsules are in perfect condition. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
