by Auctionata

January 20, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,760 - €2,200

Description: Porcelain with white glaze and polychrome paintGermany, Meissen, around 1940Shape: 'Neuer Ausschnitt'Décor: 'Flower III' with gold rim2 coffee or tea pots, 12 cups with saucers, 2 milk jugs, 2 sugar bowlsHeight: 5.5 - 17 cmDiameter: 6.7 - 10 cmHallmarked with the underglaze blue swordsmark to the underside1st and 2nd choiceVery good conditionThis exquisite porcelain coffee or tea set by Meissen will delight every future owner. The 30 pieces are hand painted with colourful wild flowers and trimmed with a gold rim as well as a gold decoration along the handles. The knobs are formed as three-dimensional rosebuds. The handles and pourers show a floral relief decor. The service includes two pots for coffee and tea and 12 small cups with saucers as well as two milk jugs and two sugar bowls. All pieces are of first and second choice and in very good condition with only minimal signs of use. The knob of one of the pots shows a little loss. The height of the cups is 5.5 cm, and the diameter is 6.7 cm. The height of the milk jugs is approximately 7.5 cm and the height of the pots is circa 17 cm. The height of the sugar bowls is circa 10 cm, and the diameter of the plates is 10.5 cm. Each piece is marked with the underglaze blue swordsmark to the underside.MeissenPorcelain was known in Europe since the 13th Century, but always had to be imported from China and was thus mostly of lower quality - the Chinese seldom gave their best ware to foreigners - and extremely expensive. Europeans tried to copy the Chinese porcelain for centuries but only in 1708 managed to create real porcelain - in Meissen. The manufacturer's brand, the crossed swords in blue, has been in use since 1722 and is still a guarantee for the high quality of the porcelain. Meissen celebrated its 300 years of existence in 2008. Quality has always been the number one criteria for Meissen and they go as far as to have their own mine to win the needed kaolin, also known as china clay, for the production. It takes several years to reach the degree of a "master painter" in Meissen but judging by the quality of the painting, it is definitely worth it. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
