19th C. Mexican Retablo - St. Jerome

Lot 257: 19th C. Mexican Retablo - St. Jerome

by ArtemisGallery LIVE

July 23, 2014, 8:00 AM PST

Erie , CO, USA

Estimated Price: $400 - $600

Description: Mexico, ca. 1800-1900. A fascinating antique tin painting depicting St. Jerome. Icons like these were placed above household altars to venerate the saints (retablo literally means "behind the altar"). The retablo became wildly popular in the 19th century due to the introduction of tin as an affordable medium. This example depicts St. Jerome, his naked body covered with lacerations, a flagellation rod in the form of a cross in his hand. He gazes mournfully at the observer. At his feet is a book, a symbol of the prolific scholarship for which he is best known. Also by his foot is a skull, a symbol of mortality. Above, an angel with a trumpet heralds the Day of Judgment. At St. Jerome's side is the lion he is said to have tamed by removing a thorn from its paw. 14" x 9-1/2".

Condition Report: Areas of loss, warping, and rust, as is typical with antique tin.
