Antonio Alonso Martinez, Mixed Media on Canvas, „España

Lot 124: Antonio Alonso Martinez, Mixed Media on Canvas, „España", 2012

by Auctionata

January 27, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €2,400 - €3,000

Description: Mixed media; including oil, acrylic, fluorescent paint and polyester on canvasSpain, 2012Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963) - Portuguese-Spanish painter Signed and dated on verso 'Matinez 2012'; also titled 'ESPAÑA'Dimensions: 81 x 65.5 cmProvenance: Private collection, SpainVery good conditionImpressive portrait of Picasso painted by the famous 'Martinez the Killer'; his works fetch up to €12,000 at international auctionsThe present portrait depicts Pablo Picasso and is a provocative and very characteristic painting by the Portuguese-Spanish artist Antonio Alonso Martinez. Head and chin of the iconic artist are bathed in red, while the middle part of his face and the background appear in bright yellow. The colors immediately evoke associations with the stripes of the Spanish national flag, which are ultimately supported by the inscription 'ESPAÑA' at the lower left. The message of the picture seems to identify Picasso as a child or even a hero of his country. But Picasso's keen view irritates and closer inspection of the painting shows that his pupils are even emphasized by white pinheads pierced through the canvas. Here, the portrait impressively unveils how Martinez uses the method of alienating his sitters in order to express allusions, possible questions or even criticism raised against the depicted persons, or at least against our perceptions of those people. The painting signed and dated on verso 'Martinez 2012' and also titled 'ESPAÑA'. The work is in very good condition with only minimal traces of wear. The size of the depiction is equal to the overall framed dimensions of 81 x 65.5 cm.Antonio Alonso Martinez (b. 1963)Martinez was born in Portugal in 1963 and studied painting in Lisbon. In his youth he was present, when his best friend was murdered at the age of eighteen. This shocking experience deeply influenced his later artistic output, since his portraits often deal with mortality. In 2011 Martinez moved to Spain, where he still lives and works. Auctionata charges the resale rights tax pursuant to Section 26 of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) towards the buyer in case of the sale of an original work of art or photography prior to 70 years having lapsed since the death of their creator. Description: Silkscreen in colors on cardboardGermany, Hamburg, 1975After Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980) - Renowned Austrian painter, graphic artist and writer; representative of Expressionism and Viennese ModernismSigned right below the depiction in print 'Oskar Kokoschka'Inscribed and dated left below the depiction in print 'Hamburg, 1961'Numbered in pencil by an alien hand left below the depiction 'A 1679/2000'Catalog raisonné: Wingler/Welz not listedDepiction: 24.4 x 32.3 cmThis is a silkscreen in colors after a work by Oskar Kokoschka from 1961. Depicted is the view of Hamburg seen from the harbor in loose lines and colorful complexion. Kokoschka had visited Hamburg for the first time in 1926 and stayed at the hotel Vier Jahreszeichen, where he created his first painting, a view from the hotel window. He returned multiple times and created almost 100 graphic works in Hamburg. The painting 'Der Hafen von Hamburg' was created in the same year as the present print. He painted the harbor panorama in commission of the banker and collector Wilhelm Reinhold from the view of a crane of the Stülcken-Werft. (Not only was a smaller version but also a lithograph for the members of the Hamburg Griffelkunst-Vereinigung created of this harbor view.)The work is below the depiction in print signed 'Oskar Kokoschka', inscribed and dated 'Hamburg, 1961' and numbered in pencil by an alien hand 'A 1679/2000'. The margin shows foxing and slight handling creases. The depiction is in very good condition. The depiction measures 24.4 x 32.3 cm and the dimensions of the sheet are 39.9 x 50 cm.Oskar Kokoschka (1886-1980)Kokoschka studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. He moved to Berlin in 1910 where he illustrated the expressionist magazine Der Sturm and had a huge exhibition in Paul Cassirer's gallery. Back in Vienna, he met Alma Mahler and when their tumultuous affair ended, Kokoschka voluntarily joined the military service. He got injured and spent the rest of the war as a war painter. He was named a professor in Dresden in 1919 and stayed there until 1924. With the beginning of the Nazi regime, Kokoschka had to flee to Prague after he was named 'The most degenerated amongst the degenerated', and, 'Hitler's artistic enemy No. 1'. He fled to England in 1938 and became a British citizen in 1946 (he only re-accepted the Austrian citizenship in 1975). He founded the Schule des Sehens, an international fine arts summer academy in Salzburg and moved to Switzerland in 1953. The artist participated in the documenta I, II and III and received many honors and awards. Paintings of his are in the possession of museums of modern art in Austria and Germany, but also in the National Gallery of Scotland and the National Gallery in Prague as well as in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
