Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,280 - €1,600

Description: Oil on canvasGermany, 1940/50sGeorg Arnold Graboné (1896-1982) -German Impressionist painterSigned lower left 'Arnold-Graboné'Verso with artist's label titled 'Fischerheimkehr auf der Nordsee' and signed 'Arnold Graboné'Opulent stucco framesDimensions: 70 x 80 cmVery good conditionAn atmospheric seascape from the oeuvre of Arnold-Graboné who gave painting lessons to Eisenhower and Churchill; paintings by the artist fetch over €4,400 at auctionThis painting by Georg Arnold Graboné depicts a maritime motif in the artist's characteristic technique. The impasto paint is not applied with a brush but with a palette knife, enabling the painter to form an almost three-dimensional landscape. Another distinctive feature is the brilliance of the subtle color palette. In addition to paintings of the Bavarian Alps, Arnold created numerous maritime landscapes of the North and Baltic Seas. Here he rendered a returning fishing boat at dusk. The setting sun bathes the scene in a soft pink light. The painting is signed lower left 'Arnold Graboné'. On the verso the canvas bears the artist's label titled 'Fischerheimkehr auf der Nordsee' and signed 'Arnold Graboné'. The work is in very good condition. The frame shows light wear. The framed work measures 91.5 x 101.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 70 x 80 cm.Georg Arnold Graboné (1896-1982)After Georg Arnold Graboné was injured in the First World War, he devoted himself to painting and studied in Stuttgart and Vienna. Here he was initially influenced by cubism, but soon turned to traditional landscape painting. He undertook numerous travels through Europe, the Middle East and North America, where he found his subject matter. Back in his hometown Munich, Arnold became a master student of Heinrich von Zügel and Leo König before he studied in Berlin under Max Liebermann. From 1932 he was a professor and later principal at the Zurich academy. End of the 1930s he settled in Upper Bavaria. After the war, General Dwight D. Eisenhower acquired a painting by the artist, and subsequently received painting and drawing lessons. Winston Churchill was also taught by Arnold. In subsequent years the German painter enjoyed international exhibition successes. Today some of his works are in the collections of the Eisenhower and Kennedy family. Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982), Alpine Landscape, 1960/70s

Lot 75: Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982), Alpine Landscape, 1960/70s

by Auctionata

January 26, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €1,600 - €2,000

Description: Oil on canvas Germany/Austria, 1960/70s Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982) - German painter Signed lower left 'Arnold Graboné'Inscribed on the verso side of the stretcher 'Im Wilden Kaiser'Dimensions: 80 x 70 cmProvenance: Private collection, Lower Saxony (Germany)View of the Kaiser Mountains in Austria painted by the well-known Alpine painter; Arnold-Graboné's paintings fetch up to €4,300 at international auctionsGeorg Arnold Graboné's works are characterized by a virtuoso spatula technique and depict Alpine and mountain motifs, in particular. The present landscape reveals a view of a mountain panorama located at the Kaiser Mountains in Austria. The composition is a typical example of his artistic output and captivates through its bright intensive colors. The painting is signed lower left 'Arnold Graboné'. It is inscribed on the stretcher 'Im Wilden Kaiser'. The paint surface only appears a bit discolored and shows minimal losses of material at the height of the tree. Inspection under UV light shows areas of retouching to the sky as well as to a restored tear in the canvas at the lower right edge. The size of the stretcher is 80 x 70 cm and the framed overall dimensions are 98.5 x 88.5 cm.Georg Arnold-Graboné (1896-1982)Georg Arnold-Graboné was born in Munich and grew up in Gerabronn, which inspired him to his pseudonym 'Graboné'. During WWI he lost his speech and hearing, so that he soon considered painting as his most important medium of expression. He later studied at the art academies in Stuttgart, Munich, Vienna, Paris and Berlin, where he finally became a master student of Max Liebermann and Leo König. In 1922, Georg Arnold-Graboné became a member of the artist's group 'Uecht'. In Paris, he was able to develop his own naturalistic style. As a mature artist, he was appointed professor at the academy in Zurich in 1930, where he was later promoted to its president. A number of study trips led him throughout Europe, the Middle East and the United States. In his later years he taught a number of young students, even including Winston Churchill among those. by Auctionata

January 29, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €3,040 - €3,800

Description: Ink drawing / colour pen on paper Germany, 1920 Karl Arnold (1883-1953), German illustrator Monogrammed lower right „CKA" Inscribed in the lower middle Overall dimensions, framed: 41 x 60 cm Good condition Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.Karl Arnold has managed to capture the character and the characters of his time in an ironic and masterly manner. The drawing "Read the Newspaper" proves this impressively. It shows a mischievously looking, respectable gentleman who sits in his armchair and is comfortably reading his newspaper. A dog is sleeping at his feet. Another reader sits smoking in an armchair behind him. Maybe the one in the seat at the front is telling the one behind about something amusing he has read in his papers. The coloured drawing is in good condition; only a minor spot can be seen in the middle underneath the drawing. The frame is new and without fault. The drawing is monogrammed in the lower right "CKA" and measures 41 x 60 cm in frame and 23.5 x 32.5 cm without frame. Karl Arnold (1883-1953) Karl Arnold studied drawing and modeling at the Ducal Industry and Trade School in Neustad before he began to study at the Academy in Munich in 1901. He visited the drawing class under Karl Raupp and later studied at the painting class under Ludwig von Löfftz and Franz von Stuck. He began drawing for the Simplicissimus in 1907 and soon worked for several other known papers. Karl Arnold was one of the most important German caricaturists of the early 20th Century. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Shroud of Tourin

Lot 44: Shroud of Tourin

by Cooper Owen

December 29, 2014, 2:00 PM GMT

Kensington, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £70,000 - £80,000

Description: An original signed artwork by John Lennon called the ?Shroud of Tourin? in which he apparently depicts himself as Christ has emerged for sale. The famous Beatle created the bizarre work in the autumn of 1966 just after his comments about the Beatles being more popular than Jesus caused a stir in the US. The unique and rarely seen canvas is similar to the original shroud in Turin in that it is hard to see and the details emerge only after close examination. It is claimed that the words on the shroud ? which measures 26.5 X 18 inches - later morphed into the song ?Strawberry Fields?. Lennon created the piece when he was on the set of the film How I Won The War where he became friends with actor Ronald Lacey. He gave the shroud to Lacey who passed it on to a friend and a letter from that friend, dated 1977, explains how it was made. He states that Lennon and Lacey ? who until that point had never experimented with drugs ? ate some chocolate laced with ?illegal substances? that were delivered to the film set in a hamper. The letter states that Mr Lennon then ?had a vision that became a revelation!!? The Beatle apparently saw an apparition like the Shroud of Turin and because Lacey had ?conked out? set about recreating it on the piece of canvas for him. According to the letter ?he was empowered to be John the individual instead of John the Beatle?. The image?s title ?Shroud of Tourin? is a reference to his dislike of touring ? he had been on the road for years at that stage. Indeed it was after Lennon?s quip that the band was more popular than Jesus that they ceased touring. The canvas shows a picture that is three dimensional. It has Lennon wearing two pairs of glasses and a Batman symbol across his chest. He has his fists held in front of him, with ?love? and ?hate? written on the knuckles. To the left is a cross on a hill with a crown above it and the word ?Elvis?. Words are written across the image. They include: ?Spectacles - wife child love - maijhuana [sic],? ?Holy Batman I knew this would happen,? and below the drawing of a radio ?tune in if you want.? The ?shroud? has been owned by a collector for many years and is to go under the hammer at an online CooperOwen sale in London on December 15. Among the other items at the auction is a cartoon portrait of Yoko Ono by Lennon, with an estimate of £17,000. He has written above it ?Hi! I?m John Lennon and I?d like you to meet Yoko Ono?. The drawing was famously reproduced in the 1970 edition of the book ?Grapefruit? by Yoko. Louise Cooper, owner-managing director of CooperOwen Music Media Auctions of London, said: ?The shroud is an astonishing relic, created by John Lennon at the height of his fame in 1966. ?It is a peculiar story about how he made it when he was on set with Ronald Lacey and after apparently taking some drugs, probably marijuana. ?He gave it to Lacey who then passed it on to a friend who wrote a letter describing how it was created and why. ?For any Lennon or Beatles? memorabilia collector this is an important piece. ?Lennon made it shortly after his comment about The Beatles being more popular than Jesus caused such controversy. It is also said that the shroud inspired the writing of ?Strawberry Fields?. ?How he made it I don?t know, but it?s like the real shroud in that you see more in a photo of it than in real life. It is also drawn in 3D and contains some rather random-sounding words and phrases. ?We are anticipating a lot of interest in the sale from around the world.? Other music memorabilia will be offered at the sale along with some original Disney cartoons by artist Michael Jackson including ones of Mickey Mouse, Snow White and Walk Disney himself. At a recent CooperOwen sale a remarkable note scrawled by Lennon blaming rockers Keith Moon and Harry Nilsson for urinating on a console at a recording studio sold for more than 50,000 pounds. Actor Ronald Lacey, who died in 1991, is probably best remembered for his villainous roles in Hollywood films, most famously Gestapo agent Major Arnold Ernst Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
