Folies-Bergère / La Belle Otero. 1898

Lot 422: Folies-Bergère / La Belle Otero. 1898

by Poster Auctions International, Inc

May 3, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $2,500

Description: Artist: PAL (Jean de Paléologue, 1860-1942) Size: 31 1/4 x 48 1/4 in./77.4 x 122.8 cm Imp. Paul Dupont, Paris Carolina Otero, more commonly known as La Belle Otero, was an exceptionally popular Spanish dancer at a variety of French musical halls around the turn of the century. Her beauty and fame were so great that she counted Prince Albert I of Monaco, King Edward VII of England, the Duke of Westminster, the Russian Grand Dukes Peter and Nicholas, as well as the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio as her lovers. Performances such as this one at the Folies-Bergère showcased her Andalusian charms and maintained her infamy in French society. Although at her height she would amass a fortune well over 25 million dollars in today's currency, she would die impoverished in Nice at the age of 96.

Condition Report: B/ Very slight tears at edges; tear in central dress area.

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. McNamee died on May 9, 1942 at St. Lukes Hospital at the age of 53. The cause of death was a brain embolism after he had been hospitalized with a streptococcus infection. He was buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Columbus, Ohio. The National Radio Hall of Fame inducted McNamee in 2011. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

WALTER KING STONE (American, 1875-1949) Rocky Cliffs ov

Lot 68127: WALTER KING STONE (American, 1875-1949) Rocky Cliffs ov

by Heritage Auctions

May 2, 2015, 2:00 PM CST

Dallas, TX, USA

Estimated Price: $3,000 - $5,000

Description: WALTER KING STONE (American, 1875-1949) Rocky Cliffs over Valley Oil on canvas 24-1/2 x 29-1/2 inches (62.2 x 74.9 cm) Signed lower right: Walter King Stone PROVENANCE: Private collection, Virginia; Estate of the above. From the early 1900s until 1920, when he began a twenty-three-year tenure as Professor of Fine Arts at Cornell University, Walter Stone King had an active career as an illustrator and writer. He won widespread recognition for his nature illustrations, which appeared in books as well as the major national magazines including Scribner's, Century, Colliers', Outing Country Life in America, St. Nicholas, and The Country Gentleman. His favorite medium as an illustrator was flat watercolor wash combined with charcoal drawing. During his years at Cornell, however, his work went through a shift as he began painting in oil, exploiting not only the vivid color the medium afforded but also the varieties of texture it was able to achieve. In this dramatic view of the plains below a towering rocky cliff, Stone seems to have adopted the vantage point of one of the birds of prey he often illustrated. Like Maxfield Parrish and other successful illustrators who were sophisticated colorists, Stone rendered the shadows in this scene with a searing blue, which creates a forceful optical dazzle against the golden cliffs. Stone was a friend and favorite painter of the poet Robert Frost.

Condition Report: Original unlined canvas.
