Exposition Gallery Adriano Ribolzi Monaco, Rétrospective RAZA oeuvres de 1950 à 2001, reproduit page 61.Maître fondateur du Progressive Artiste groupe, Sayed Haider RAZA jette les bases de l'art contemporain indien, il comprend qu'il lui faut venir étudier à Paris. Il entre aux Beaux-arts, découvre l'école de Paris et les principaux acteurs d'une peinture non figurative. Raza voyage, dessine d'après nature en peignant des paysages. « J'avais beaucoup étudié Cézanne. Mes toiles commençaient ainsi à avoir des murs. J'obtenais même en 1956 le Prix de la Critique. Mais si mes peintures avaient désormais un toit, je n'étais nulle part. Où es-tu toi Raza dans tes toiles ? Dans ces paysages où est ton pays, où est la civilisation indienne ? En fait mes peintures n'étaient pas habitées. Il manquait une présence, une émotion, un sentiment, ce qu'on appelle le bhâva dans l'esthétique indienne. L'inde devait réapparaître dans mes toiles. Je devais me ressourcer, repartir en Inde ». Raza a alors soixante ans. Il va y retourner chaque année. Les années 1980 témoignent ainsi d'un tournant dans son oeuvre. Rajasthan est sa première série dans laquelle il se retrouve car « ce n'est plus une réalité visuelle, mais une expression spirituelle ». L'artiste représente le Rajasthan non tel qu'il est mais tel qu'il le perçoit en tant que peintre. Pour Raza ce n'est pas encore suffisant. Il veut aller au plus près de sa nature, retrouver le plus instinctivement possible l'inné sous l'acquis, ce processus de création qui s'enclenche et « nous échappe » avec pour terreau cette « indianité » et une logique plastique. « Alors tout naturellement le bindu s'est imposé à moi. A l'âge de sept ans je détestais l'école. Mon père est allé voir l'instituteur. Quelques jours plus tard, l'instituteur m'emmenait devant le mur blanc de l'école sur lequel il avait dessiné un point. Assieds toi m'a-t-il dit et regarde tout simplement ce point avec confiance, avec bonheur ! On l'appelle bindu. Oublie tout, les oiseaux, les arbres, les leçons apprises. Le maître est alors parti, me laissant seul face au point. J'avais peur qu'il me punisse. Mais il est revenu et m'a dit : c'est bon rentre chez toi. Demain on peut commencer les leçons particulières. Sur le moment je n'ai rien saisi bien sûr mais cette leçon m'est restée.... j'ai compris plus tard » Compris qu'à partir de ce point, de ce rattachement à un centre, tout pouvait repartir et tout était reparti comme son intérêt pour l'école alors qu'il était enfant. Le bindu est dans le monde hindouiste, la semence, la graine quicontient toute chose. Depuis Raza a parcouru biend'autres mondes géométriques composé de triangles, de carrés ou de ronds ; autant de figures qui évoquent la tradition de la peinture tantrique (de tantra, la trame, la chaîne d'un tissu, la règle, le livre doctrinal) avec ses cercles, les mandala ou ses diagrammes, lesyantras. Mais si Raza s'inspire du tantrisme, ce n'est pas pour en suivre les principes mais pour chercher à comprendre l'esprit de ce qui dans ses déclinaisons a priori abstraites (les yantra sont des supports visuels de méditation) touche non pas notre intellect mais notre perception la plus élevée, la plus profonde. Une démarche essentielle dans la recherche formaliste de l'artiste. Car Raza, bien que construisant « une oeuvre plastique à part entière » rappelait le critique d'art, Pierre Gaudibert, tente toujours d'éveiller, de solliciter la meilleur part de nous mêmes. Une volonté qui n'est pas sans filiation avec cette croyance de l'Inde ancienne qui postulait que « l'homme détient toujours une étincelle divine mais n'en a jamais conscience ».

The paper's watermark is a flower. Caroline Anne Stanhope and Charlotte Stanhope were the daughters of Jane Fleming and General Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl of Harrington. Jane Fleming was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Queen Charlotte and her portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds is in the collection of the Huntington Library. General Stanhope's illustrious military career included serving as an aide-de-camp to General Burgoyne in the Battle of Saratoga in the Revolutionary War. Caroline Anne Stanhope married Edward Ashford Sanford in 1841 and she died in 1853. The couple lived in Nynehead Court in Somerset, England. Description: inscribed "Title- Snubbing the Canoe" and "32" on back Born in Winthrop, Massachusetts, John Whorf spent many years painting the seascapes around Provincetown, Massachusetts. As a young man, he studied in Boston at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and the St. Botolph Studio under Philip Leslie Hale (1865-1931) and Sherman Kidd (b. 1877). In 1919, after recovering from a paralyzing accident, Whorf traveled to Europe. He painted throughout France, Portugal, and Morocco, gradually shifting to painting watercolors as well as oils. Whorf held his first one-man show in 1921, and continued to hold them twice a year for the next thirty-five years. Upon returning to America, Whorf continued his studies with famed American painter John Singer Sargent (1903-1959) in Boston. Whorf married Vivienne Wing in 1925 and fathered four children. He and his family lived in Brookline and spent summers in Provincetown until 1937 when they relocated permanently to the lower Cape. In 1938, Harvard College conferred on Whorf an Honorary Master of Fine Arts degree. His work is in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.
