Vienna Bronze 'Wood Grouse on a Gnarled Branch', around 1920

Lot 23: Vienna Bronze 'Wood Grouse on a Gnarled Branch', around 1920

by Auctionata AG

April 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €720 - €900

Description: Bronze, cold painted Austria, around 1920 Manufactory Bergmann (est. 1860) - Producer of Vienna Bronzes Mounted on a black marble base Naturalistic designed figure Height of the figure: 14.5 cm Good Condition Provenance: from an Austrian private collection Vienna bronze in the form of a courting wood grouse with finely worked feathering This Viennese Bronze, made in the early 20th century, offers the naturalistic design in strong cold painting. Shown is a wood grouse, which belongs to the largest galliforms in Europe. This shy bird is especially native in the needle, mixed and deciduous forests. In this case, the courting bird is depicted on a gnarled branch, has slightly tilted his head to the ground, spread his wings and his tail is erect. The bronze is mounted on a square marble base and displays the masterful craftsmanship, which made the Vienna Bronzes so famous. This Viennese Bronze is in good condition signs of age and wear. Some paint is rubbed off here and there and the base is bumped at the lower edge. The height of the figure measures 14.5 cm. The total height is 20 cm and the width 13 cm. Vienna Bronze The term 'Vienna Bronze' refers to very fine cast bronzes from the period of around 1880 to 1930. The very naturalistic small sculptures depict human figures, often with exotic features, humans and animals, humorous illustrations as well as erotica. The bronzes were so fashionable that there were 80 companies in Vienna which concentrated on these products. A large number of significant artistic works was melted during the world wars to meet the metal needs of the artillery, thus the bronzes are now not only treasures but rare collectibles. The most famous manufacturer of Vienna Bronzes was the Manufactory Bergmann. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Auctionata charges the resale rights tax pursuant to Section 26 of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) towards the buyer in case of the sale of an original work of art or photography prior to 70 years having lapsed since the death of their creator. Therefore, Auctionata charges when purchasing a good - if a protection as an original work of art or photography is given - starting from a hammer price of EUR 400 an additional amount, which is calculated according to Section 26 (2) German Copyright Act (UrhG) and which does not exceed the amount of EUR 12,500. You can find more information about resale rights tax in Auctionata´s table of fees and T&C.

Vienna Bronze 'Chicken', Bell Pusher with an Egg Button, 1920

Lot 24: Vienna Bronze 'Chicken', Bell Pusher with an Egg Button, 1920

by Auctionata AG

April 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €280 - €340

Description: Bronze, cold painted, celluloid Austria, around 1920 - or somewhat later Manufactory Bergmann (est. 1860) - Producer of Vienna Bronzes Separate collector's area under the Vienna Bronze Fine designed plumage Chicken in expectant attitude Height: 7 cm Good Condition Provenance: from an Austrian private collection Essential Vienna Bronze in the collector's area of bell pushers This Viennese Bronze, manufactured as a bell push button, is a charming example of the small sculptures made in the early 20th century. Pictured is a chicken in expectant attitude on his nest, considering its egg. The plumage of the animal as well as the elements of the nest are extremely fine elaborated. The cockscomb and its face are accentuated by cold painting. The egg is made of celluloid and serves as the push button. The latter was originally used to summoned servants to the lordly premises and was therefore essential in the equipment. This Viennese Bronze is in good condition with hardly any signs of wear. The height measures 7 cm. Vienna Bronze The term 'Vienna Bronze' refers to very fine cast bronzes from the period of around 1880 to 1930. Bergmann Vienna Bronze 'Scholar' by Karl Tuch, c. 1890

Lot 13: Bergmann Vienna Bronze 'Scholar' by Karl Tuch, c. 1890

by Auctionata AG

April 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €400 - €500

Description: Marble and bronze with olive green patina Austria, around 1890 Manufactory Bergmann (est. 1860) - Producers of Vienna Bronzes Prof. Tuch - Austrian sculptor Signed on the back 'Prof. Tuch' Manufactory mark 'B' in circle and triangle Rare Viennese Bronze depicting a scholar in antique style mounted on marble base Overall height: 19 cm Good condition Provenance: From the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna Viennese bronze sculptures of this kind are quite popular collectibles due to its elaborate design Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.This bronze sculpture from the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna was created around 1890. It depicts the figure of a scholar in classical antique style, decorated with an olive green patina. Sitting quite relaxed on a throne whose armrests are decorated with lion heads, he holds a scroll in his hand. His body is covered with a sheet that is draped loose around his lap. The sculpture is mounted on a marble base and is signed on the back 'Prof. Tuch'. It further wears the manufactory mark 'B' surrounded by a circle and triangle. It is in good condition showing slight signs of age and wear. The figure is slightly rubbed at some parts and measures 19 cm in height. Franz Xaver Bergmann (1861-1936) Franz Xaver Bergmann was the son of a bronze caster with the same name who had a small bronze foundry in Vienna. Bergmann inherited the foundry of his father and reopened it in 1900. Many of the designs however stem from the old sketch books of his father. The foundry was especially famous for its very naturalistic cold painted animal bronzes. Cold painted bronzes differ from fire glazed ones as the glaze can be applied in more layers. The knowledge on how to cold glaze is lost which makes the Bergmann bronzes especially valuable. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Carl Kauba, Bronze 'Bow Shooting Native American', c. 1950

Lot 20: Carl Kauba, Bronze 'Bow Shooting Native American', c. 1950

by Auctionata AG

April 17, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €200 - €240

Description: Cold-painted bronze Austria, around 1950 - or somewhat later Carl Kauba (1865-1822) - Viennese sculptor Signed 'C. Kauba' and marked 'AUSTRIA' on the plinth Dynamic figure of a bow shooting Native American Dimensions: 8 x 10.8 x 6.4 cm (height x width x depth) Very good condition Provenance: from the former sample stock of the Bergmann factory in Vienna An original bronze by the famous Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba; one of the greatest portraitists of the American West Object is regular taxed. 19% VAT is added to the purchase price for deliveries within the EU.This elaborately crafted bronze originates from the famous Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba, who created many designs for the Bronze foundry Bergmann. In a dynamic way, the bronze depicts a Native American, who is just about to shoot an arrow with a bow. He is leaning forward on his knee, highly concentrated targeting with his bow to his left. Especially finely executed is the thin thread of the bow, which was originally made of animal tendons. The Native Americans of the Wild West used arrow and bow for hunting purposes and as a weapon. The bronze is in very good condition with slight traces of wear. It is signed 'C. Kauba' and marked 'AUSTRIA' on the plinth in the cast. The dimensions, including the plinth, are 8 x 10.8 x 6.4 cm (height x width x depth). Vienna Bronze The term 'Vienna Bronze' refers to very fine cast bronzes from the period of around 1880 to 1930. The very naturalistic small sculptures depict human figures, often with exotic features, humans and animals, humorous illustrations as well as erotica. The bronzes were so fashionable that there were 80 companies in Vienna, which concentrated on these products. A large number of significant artistic works was melted during the world wars to meet the metal needs of the artillery, thus the bronzes are now not only treasures but rare collectibles. Carl Kauba (1865-1922) The Austrian sculptor Carl Kauba attended the Viennese Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by Laufenberg, Waschmann and Schwartz. He later continued his education in Paris. Kauba's polychrome, very detailed and realistic sculptures make him one of the leading 'Viennese bronze' artists. Fascinated by the adventure novels by the German author Karl May (1842-1912), his expressive illustrations mostly show Wild West motifs, like cowboys and Native Americans. His representation of American Indian headdresses, weapons and costumes were rendered with great attention to detail. There is no evidence that Kauba himself has ever been to America. Carl Kauba personally directed the casting of his clay models. Most bronzes from the years 1895 to 1912 were produced for the U.S. market, where they were offered in New York until the 1950s. Today collectors rank Kauba in the same league as Frederic Remington (1961-1909) and Charles Russell (1864-1926), the great portrayers of the American West.
