An Elkington silver-plate scale-copy of the Venus Rosewater Dish originally

Lot 261: An Elkington silver-plate scale-copy of the Venus Rosewater Dish originally

by Graham Budd Auctions

May 18, 2015, 10:30 AM GMT

London, United Kingdom

Estimated Price: £500 - £700

Description: An Elkington silver-plate scale-copy of the Venus Rosewater Dish originally owned by the Victorian tennis player James Baldwin winner of the All-England Mixed Doubles Championship with Ms K. Hill in 1890, approx. ¾ scale faithful copy of the trophy presented to the Ladies Champion at Wimbledon on Centre Court each year, an electrotype circular 'Temperantia' charger dish, after the original by Francois Briot (circa 1585), decorated in relief with a design of allegorical cartouches within borders of strapwork, birds, masks and flowers, diameter approx. 39.5cm., 15 1/2in. copper exposed on raised surfaces due to over cleaning through time; sold together with a silver-plated goblet won by James Baldwin at the heavyweight boxing championship at Bath in 1891, presentation inscription to the bowl, height 20cm., 8in. (2) Provenance: By family descent Extracts from James Baldwin's obituary in the Bath Weekly Chronicle reads " ... in boxing he had been the hero of several truly Homeric combats, in one of which he was the victor after 23 rounds ... his spell as Master of the Bath Harriers ended in 1899, when he was presented with a handsome silver salve at a complimentary banquet at the Assembly Rooms in April, 1899 ... In November,1905, he accepted the Mastership for a second period ... He had represented Somerset at lawn tennis in the County Championship, and was honoured by being placed on the Committee of the Somerset Lawn Tennis Association." He was also the subject of a feature in the Sporting Gazette 27.5.1899 under the heading 'The County Gentleman: Mr James Baldwin" which tells us that he was from a sporting Irish family in County Cork with prominent links to hunting. He was educated in England, and when at school was stroke of his boat. He also captained the Bath football team for two seasons, and afterwards took up lawn tennis, at which game he was most successful for many years, having held nearly all the champion cups in England. This included the All-England Mixed Doubles title with Ms K Hill in 1890. He also excelled at boxing having won the heavy and light weight cups competed for by amateurs in Bath and County. Additionally he was described as a remarkably good shot and a keen fisherman.

DANCE MASK OF A KRODHA DEITY

Lot 188: DANCE MASK OF A KRODHA DEITY

by Galerie Zacke Vienna

May 14, 2015, 2:00 PM CET

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €300 - €600

Description: Wood with black coating. Tibet, 19th cent. Large ritual cham dance mask, depicting a Krodha deity with fangs and large, staring demonic eyes. Presumably a Mahakala, as it is painted black. A third eye on the forehead, the diadem with skulls. Certain parts were effectively gilded (remnants). Minor bruises on exposed parts due to age, otherwise well-preserved, lacquer seal on the inside. HEIGHT 27,5 CM From the former collection of Heinrich Harrer Harrer, a mountaineer, adventurous explorer and writer, gained worldwide prominence for his ground-breaking ascent up the Eiger's north face in 1938 and later for his book "7 Years in Tibet" (1952, translated into 53 languages). In the course of his escape from a British prisoner-of-war camp in India, Harrer, together with Aufschnaiter, was the first ever European to reach Lhasa, where he stayed until 1951. During his stay he became the teacher of the Dalai Lhama, with whom he fled to India during the Sino-Tibetan conflict in 1950/51, sharing a lasting friendship together until the end of his days. The book, which tells of this adventurous escape and his time in Tibet, was made into a blockbuster film in 1997, starring Brad Pitt in the lead role. Harrer, who lived in Hüttenberg (Carinthia) until 2006, was personally acquainted with us and regularly contributed important objects from his collection - most of which was obtained by the Rietberg Museum in Zurich - to earlier exhibitions in our gallery, which was located in Vienna's Schulerstraße at the time.

Vienna, Austria

Estimated Price: €100 - €200

Description: Schistose and serpentine. Tibet, old Engraved in the grey schistose piece is the popular mantra OM MANI PADME HUM, in simplified script. It symbolises the absolute of spiritual energy. The second piece is smaller, but offers a vivid rendition of a male head, wearing a hat and holding his hanging mouth slightly open. Greenish colour with dark grain, lightly polished. WIDTH 8,5 CM, HEIGHT (HEAD) 6 CM From the former collection of Heinrich Harrer Harrer, a mountaineer, adventurous explorer and writer, gained worldwide prominence for his ground-breaking ascent up the Eiger's north face in 1938 and later for his book "7 Years in Tibet" (1952, translated into 53 languages).
