Three letters with signatures of the authors Azar, S. Ben Zion and Yosef Yoel Rivlin

Lot 422: Three letters with signatures of the authors Azar, S. Ben Zion and Yosef Yoel Rivlin

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

April 12, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: 1. A letter to Mrs. Granovsky from the deputy chairman of the committee of Beit Echad Ha'Am, Alexander Ziskind Rabinowitz (Azar) from 20.3.1928. The letter expresses the feelings of gratitude towards Mrs. Granovsky, who donated the furniture of her late husband, Moshe Granovsky to Beit Echad Ha'Am. Beir Echad Ha'Am received this news from Chaim Nachman Bialik, Granovsky's friend. The donator is asked to order metal plates to engrave her late husband's name on. In addition, she is asked whether she has books that she could donate as well. The letter is written on the official stationary of Beit Echad Ha'Am and hand-signed by Azar. Beit Echad Ha'Am is the house of Ascher Zvi Greenberg, a philosopher and founder of the Spiritual Zionism Movement. Already in his life, the street where he lived was named after him. The house was given to him by the Tel-Aviv municipality to help him continue in his writing and thought. After his death, in 1927, the house opened to the public. The house had a library that contained close to 20,000 books. Moshe Granovsky (1865-1928) was one of the most important Zionists in Odessa. His house served as a meeting place for Odessan scholars and authors and for Russian Jewish leaders. He invested a lot of money in settlements in the Land of Israel, participated in Zionist congresses and supported the strengthening of the Hebrew language. The national poet, Chaim Nachman Bialik was among his closest friends. Granovsky tried to immigrate to Israel, yet returned to Odessa due to an illness. He eventually did immigrate to Israel in 1922 and died in 1928. Alexander Ziskind Rabinowitz (Azar) (1854-1945) the oldest author in Israel and the translator of dozens of books. He was born in Russia and immigrated to Israel during the Second Aliyah. In Israel, he worked as a librarian and was close to the authors Shai Agnon and Y.H. Brener. He was also a frequent visitor to the house of Rabbi Avraham Yitzchak Ha'Cohen Kook. 2. A letter to Advocate Binyamini from Tel-Aviv from S. Ben Zion, secretary of Bet Echad Ha'Am committee, and Azar, deputy chairman of the committee, 13.4.1928. The letter expresses the feelings of gratitude towards the addressee for his desire to transfer the estate of the late M. Berlin of Riga to Beit Echad Ha'Am. The offer was made by Refael Superman, a Hebrew teacher in Poland and a member of the city council of Tel-Aviv. The letter is written on the official stationary of Beit Echad Ha'Am and hand-signed by S. Ben Zion and by Azar. Simcha Alter Gutman, known by the pen name S. Ben Zion (1870-1932) was an author, editor and publisher, among the founders of Tel Aviv. 3.A letter in the handwriting of Dr. Yosef Rivlin. A letter from 29.7.1935 from Dr. Yosef Yoel Rivlin to Chaim Arya. The letter deals with an attempt to help the Hebrew schools in Poland, financially and in other ways. The Polish Hebrew schools were founded between the two World Wars by Dr. Mordechai Ze'ev Broyda in order to respond to the processes of secularization in the Jewish society while maintaining the basic connection to the Jewish tradition and culture. Since 1932, the attitude of the Polish authorities to these schools had deteriorated. A law was legislated that questioned the legal status of educational institutions of minorities and it was thoroughly enforced. A Zionist movement named 'Tarbut' (Culture) acted to revive the Hebrew language in Poland and to encourage immigration to the Land of Israel. The movement preserved the Jewish, yet not the religious, culture. The economic situation of 'Tarbut' was bad and its teachers had not received their salaries for many months. Among the teachers who taught at the 'Tarbut' school was Shmuel Rosenhek (1894-1969), a teacher and educator, the editor of the children's newspaper 'Olami Ha'Ktantan' (My Tiny World) and the founder of 'Tarbut' school in Volyn. The letter mentions Rosenhek, who had travelled to Israel to ask for help for the schools together with Dr. Aharonson. The writer of the letter is Dr. Yosef Yoel Rivlin (1889-1971), an Israeli expert in Middle Eastern affairs and the father of the Israeli president Reuben Rivlin. Rivlin was born in Jerusalem. He studied at Etz Chaim Talmud Torah and at 'Lamel' school and the Ezra Seminar for teachers. He also studied at an independent Moslem school. After he was imprisoned and released from the prison in Damascus, he managed there a Hebrew school for girls. In Frankfurt, he studied Arabic and Moslem studies and received his Ph.D. When he returned to Israel, he received professorship from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. He translated many Islamic books to Hebrew, among them the Qur'an. Since the establishment of the State, he was a member of the 'Cherut' movement. The letter is hand-written and signed by Rivlin. Condition: Very good. Filing holes.

Description: A great group of historic documents from Eastern Air Lines. 1) Typed letter signed by Eddie Rickenbacker, the famous flying ace, as head of Eastern Air Lines dated 1949, on Eastern Air Lines letterhead. Great content, as Rickenbacker writes Marcie Lieberman, the mayor of Miami Beach, Florida, detailing Eastern's "all out" campaign to promote Florida as an all-year vacationland. Rickenbacker notes that their publicity story, "Florida As We Know It" had been distributed to 2,000 editors of house organs throughout the country. Eastern Air Lines had a near monopoly on air travel between New York and Florida from the 1930's to the 1950's and had it's headquarters at Miami International Airport when it dissolved in 1991. This letter has great historical content. Nice clear signature of Eddie Rickenbacker in blue pen. VF. Also comes with one of his business cards from Eastern listing him as Chairman of the Board. 2) Stock certificate from Eastern Air Lines, Inc., issued in 1938 and with facsimile signature of Rickenbacker as president. A map of the Eastern Air Transport System is on the back. 4) Two 8 1/2 x 11" black and white photos of Rickenbacker, one showing him boarding and Eastern plane and the other as the famous "flying ace". by Rock Island Auction Company

April 26, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $5,000

Description: Historic Shadow Box Display of World War II Commander and Five Star General Omar N. Bradley with Letter of Provenance from Ret. Major General John E. Bianchi General Omar N. Bradley is one of the United States military's most historic leaders. He commanded all of the U.S. ground forces invading Germany from the Normandy campaign to the fall of Nazi Germany. At one point he was in command of nearly one and a half million men; the largest fighting force ever under control of a U.S. field commander. After WWII, he led the Veterans Administration, became Chief of Staff of the United States Army, and served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He retired after helping oversee the policies of the Korean War, but, as Bianchi notes, "The Department of the Army kept General Bradley on open consulting status following his retirement and continued to supply him with updated uniform accoutrements until his death." Bradley is the last of only nine individuals to earn a five-star ranking in the United States military. The included letter of provenance from Retired Major General John Bianchi lists the contents of the case as: pair of five star silver insignia of rank and matching epaulettes, an "ONB" marked wallet belonging to General Bradley with two calling cards circa 1950 presented to the General by President Truman upon his promotion to five star general, original black and white photograph of the General in a khaki summer uniform, and an autographed copy of his biography A GENERAL'S LIFE. The letter explains that Bianchi was the General's neighbor at the time of his death in 1981 at Springs Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. He acquired the items from the General's widow. Bianchi is himself a well respected military veteran and committed American. He founded the famed Bianchi International gunleather company, the Frontier Museum Historical Center, and Bianchi Cup/NRA Annual International Pistol Championship and is the author of BLUE STEEL AND GUNLEATHER. He came out of retirement to help the U.S. mobilization effort for the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Manufacturer: None Model: None BBL: Stock: Gauge: Finish: Grips: Serial Number: Class: Other Condition: Excellent. The display is in immaculate condition with only some faint handling and storage marks. Most of the items contained inside are in excellent condition including the wallet which shows only minor signs of use.

Revisionist Movement, two important letters and rare document

Lot 445: Revisionist Movement, two important letters and rare document

by Jerusalem of Gold Ltd.

April 12, 2015, 5:00 PM EET

Jerusalem, Israel

Description: 1) Letter from Baruch Weinstein, secretary of special union of Revisionist Zionist in London, to Shlomo Vigodsky in Tel Aviv, 1933. Typewritten, with Weinstein's signature. The letter concerns functional problems of the Eretz Israel Committee in Paris. Baruch Weinstein (1898-1982), Revisionist activist who became the right hand of Revisionist leader Ze'ev Jabotinsky in the 1930s. As a young man, served time in Russian prison for participating in public activities. Took part as a delegate in many Zionist Congresses, and served as secretary of the "Doar Hayom" newspaper. Shlomo Vigodsky (1902-1984), one of the first Beitarists in Poland. Later served as head of the department for the History of the Israeli armed struggle for independence in the Jabotinsky Institute. Condition: Excellent. Filing holes, fold marks. 2) Letter from Lehi commanders, in their signature, concerning the establishment of a museum named after "Yair" Stern. A letter from the "Committee for the establishment of Beit Yair" to Oved Ben-Ami, 3 September 1964. Printed on official paper of the committee. In the 1960s, the "Association for the Commemoration of Lehi Fighters" to commemorate Yair Stern by buying the house in which he was murdered (which was slated for demolition), and turning it into a Lehi museum. In this letter, board members approach Oved Ben-Ami, a founder of the city of Netanya, and thank him for his willingness to donate 20,000 Lira for the purchase of the house. Avraham Stern (1907-1942), known as "Yair", was the founder and first commander of the "Israeli Freedom Fighters Association" (Lehi). Yair was hunted by the British mandate security forces, whose detectives located him in an apartment on 8 Ha'Mizrahi St., Tel Aviv, where they shot and killed him on 12 February 1942. The letter is signed by Yitzhak Shamir, former Lehi leader and future Prime Minister of Israel; Anshel Spielman, Lehi activist and chair of the "Association for the Commemoration of Lehi Fighters"; Tuviya Chen-Zion, prominent Lehi commander who gave the movement its name; David Stern, the younger brother of "Yair", and later a Likud MK. Copy of the letter addressed to David Tidhar, the chief of police in Jerusalem during the British Mandate, a writer and editor of the "Encyclopedia of Yishuv Pioneers and Builders." Condition: very good. 3) Honorary certificate in Hebrew and Spanish of "The Iron Plates of the Tel Hai Fund [Luhot ha'Barzel le'Keren Tel Hai]", signed (in English) by Menachem Begin. Jerusalem, ca. 1975-1977. The Tel Hai Fund was founded in London in 1929, after the events of the 1929 riots, to support Hebrew defense in Israel and to educate for this purpose. The Fund was used by the Tzohar (Zionist Revisionists Alliance) and helped Beitar immigrants. It appears that the expansion of Herut movement in the seventies by Ezer Weizman, and the need for financing, caused the Fund to invest in the gray market loans, which led eventually to the collapse of the fund. When this was discovered in 1975, Chairman of the Movement Menachem Begin invested heavily in rebuilding the Fund. He rented out the organization's assets and embarked on worldwide fundraising campaigns. Some claim that Begin's many efforts seriously affected his health, and led up to his suffering a heart attack. The certificate before us was apparently prepared for a fundraiser to be held in Spain, but the potential donors' lines remained empty, save for Begin's signature (in English). Rare! Condition: Excellent.

Colt Model 1878 Special Order Deluxe Double Hammergun

Lot 55: Colt Model 1878 Special Order Deluxe Double Hammergun

by Amoskeag Auction Co

March 28, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

Manchester, NH, USA

Estimated Price: $4,000 - $6,000

Description: serial #14686, 10 bore, 30" damascus barrels with very good bores that show just a little light pitting mostly just ahead of the chambers. These shotguns were the most expensive items in the Colt catalog when they were made between 1878 and 1889. This shotgun has special engraving which is listed on the included factory letter as "Factory Engraved: Yes $85.00 worth of engraving". This engraving consists of tight scroll on lockplates, frame, hammers, recoil shields, top lever, triggerguard and forend metal. The condition of the shotgun is very nice with the barrels retaining about 90% original brown finish which is just thinning slightly and shows strong damascus pattern their entire lengths. The action and locks retain about 60% original color case-hardened finish which is most vivid on locks and fading to a smooth gray brown patina on belly. The checkered round knob pistolgrip buttstock and forend are of nicely figured English walnut and rate excellent with 90% original finish remaining and with just light wear to the checkering. The factory letter lists the chokes as "left 300 right 300" and shows this as a single gun shipment to Hibbard, Spencer and Bartlett on April 3, 1883. Overall a very fine and rare high grade Colt double Hammergun. (17063-36) {ANTIQUE}
