M.M. Fredrick, Virginia City Pocket Watch

Lot 1612: M.M. Fredrick, Virginia City Pocket Watch

by Holabird Western Americana

April 10, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $10,000 - $17,500

Description: Beautiful size 18 Elgin pocket watch with 7-jewel hunter case movement. Key wind and set. Single sunk white "M.M. Fredrick" dial, black roman numerals, blued spade hands. The glass crystal is in excellent condition, with no scratches or chips. Dial bears hairline cracks. The gold filled case is a G.W.L., serial number 22368, with no other markings save for small initials representing various entities who once handled or repaired the watch. The Elgin 7-jewel full-plate mechanism is a J. T. Ryerson with a 200353 serial number indicating this watch mechanism was manufactured in 1872. "M. M. Fredrick/ Virginia, Nev" is also engraved in the mechanism. The lightly embellished case is worn through to the brass on the front and rear of the crown post. Included is a fabulous 13" chain with an additional 3.5" connected to a T-bar, and a 1" segment bearing a locket fob. The chain consists of six 1.5" segments of gold in quartz (alternating pink and black quartz samples) and the fob is gold in pink quartz on one side, with samples of gold in green and black quartz on reverse. The 1.25" x 1.5" locket is empty, but has space for a 0.75" x 1" photo in each half. The T-bar also bears pink and black quartz with gold, with only slight chipping on the black sample. This stunning chain and watch represent a fine work of art by the Pioneer Watch Maker. Winding key included. The M. M. Fredrick business was truly one of the pioneer jewelry businesses in Nevada. It began as Eaves & Nye in Virginia City in late 1862 or early 1863. William T. Eaves and Emanuel Nye started their jewelry store on the corner of C and Union Streets. Eaves lived in the building, perhaps in an apartment in the back or upstairs as was the common practice in Virginia City at the time. Nye, a carpenter in 1862 in Virginia City, lived on Stewart. Eaves was not present in 1862 for inclusion in Kelley`s First Directory of Nevada Territory [Ref: 1862 and 1863 Nevada Territory Directories]. Nye took over the partnership in the mid-1860s. By 1867 the firm was known as Nye & Rothenbucher, according to Langley`s Pacific Coast Business Directory for 1867. Emanuel Nye may have briefly left Virginia City in the early 1870s. The name does not appear again until much later, and then as a saloon proprietor. In 1871, the firm Nye & Co. was run by Issac Fredrick, probably a relative of M. M. Fredrick. Both the Nye & Co. and Fredrick businesses were listed at the same address, 36 South C Street in the 1871 Langley Pacific Coast Business Directory. They were listed as watch makers and jewelers. M. M. Fredrick took over the business and began using his own name in 1872, calling himself a manufacturing jeweler. The business made it through the fire of 1875. By 1877 Fredrick was billed as the Nevada Jewelry Manufactory, as listed on his billheads and in the Bishop`s Directory of Virginia City and surrounds in 1878. Meanwhile, Fredrick`s business was doing so well that he opened two other businesses. The M. M. Fredrick House, a lodging establishment on the north east corner of Union and C Streets, was opened about 1876 and run by his son, M. M. Fredrick, Jr. He also ran an auction business in 1876 [Ref: 1876 Langley Pacific Coast Business Directory]. By 1883, Fredrick was known as the Pioneer Watch Maker, still located at the old shop address, 36 South C. His store and business was then twenty years old [Ref: McKenney`s Oregon State Directory for 1883]. City: Virginia City State: Nevada, Circa: c.1872

Territorial Comstock Assessments for Two Diff. Companies

Lot 1521: Territorial Comstock Assessments for Two Diff. Companies

by Holabird Western Americana

April 10, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $200 - $400

Description: Lot of six Nevada Territory assessment receipts. All have Virginia dateline. Identical form for two different companies. Two are for the Santa Rosa Gold and Silver Mining Company (Oct. 5 and 21, 1863). Towne & Bacon Printers in S.F. Four are for Bonanza Gold and Silver Mining Company (Sept. 1863-January 1864). J.P. Le Count Stationer. We were able to locate three different Santa Rosa mining companies in Nevada for that period. One in Virginia City (A St. near Best & Belcher, Gould & Curry), one in the center of Gold Hill, and one outside of Carson City. Based on W. Rose's Revised Chart of the Comstock Mines and Sutro Tunnel (1878, printed by Payot, Uphan & Co., S.F.), we believe that the Santa Rosa in question was the one in Virginia City. Rose's map shows the Bonanza mine very close to the Santa Rosa. Given that they are located close to each other spatially and their forms are identical, we believe they may have been related. These are rare, early receipts from lesser known mining companies. Wear on receipts are folds and light soiling. They measure 3.5" x 7.25" (Prag Collection) City: Virginia City State: Nevada, Circa: 1863-64

Clason's Touring Atlas / Leahy's 1933 Hotel Guide and Travel Atlas

Lot 4658: Clason's Touring Atlas / Leahy's 1933 Hotel Guide and Travel Atlas

by Holabird Western Americana

April 18, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $150 - $300

Description: Clason's Touring Atlas (12" x 8.25", opens to 12" x 16.5"), 4 copies. An accurate guide to the best roads in every state. Published by the Clason Map Company, Denver Colorado. Two copies priced at 50 cents and other two priced at 75 cents. One copy dated 1931. In 1923, the Clason Map Company produced its first road atlas of the United States. An advertisement appearing in the August 4, 1923 issue of the Chicago Daily Tribune (shown at right) shows a picture of Clason's "Best Roads of the United States" atlas and proclaims that it is "just off the press; nothing like it has ever been published before." There is some validity to this claim. Although the Cram Co. had produced a "Good Roads Atlas of the United States" and an "Auto Trails and Commercial Survey of the United States" a few years earlier, the road component of theses atlases was rudimentary at best, consisting of nothing more than a few "main roads" that had been crudely overprinted in red on some already existing state railroad maps. By contrast, Clason's road atlas contained fresh state maps that focused just on the road networks and that provided such details as the mileage between towns as well as the quality of the roads. Rand McNally followed this approach as well when it launched its first U.S. road atlas one year later. Copies are in used condition. All are in used condition. Hard bound, dark green cover of Leahy's Railway Distance Maps, Auto Road Maps, Air Lines Map (16" x 10.25") 106 pp. Published by American Hotel Register Co., Chicago. Copyright 1937 by Rand McNally & Company, Chicago, San Francisco, New York. Inside is loose from the binding. Also included is a tiny pamphet with a fold-out "Sketch" map of Colorado (3.5" x 2"), opens to 8.5" 11". Very good condition. City: State: United States, Circa:

Lot 3484: "Memoir of the Proposed Territory of Arizona" by Sylvester Mowry (reprint)

by Holabird Western Americana

April 17, 2015, 8:00 AM PST

Reno, NV, USA

Estimated Price: $70 - $200

Description: Reprint from an 1857 book. Mowry (for whom Mowry, Arizona is named) was an early pioneer. He was arrested as a traitor during the Civil War and was a great enemy of the Apache Indians. "In the possession of the writer of these notes is a map drawn in 1757, just one hundred years ago, presented by the Society of Jesuits to the King of Spain. The original of this map is now in the archives of the Mexican Government. It was copied, with the notes relating to the Territory, and to Sonora, Chihuahua, and Sinaloa, by Capt. C. P. Stone, late of the United States Army. The map bears the inscription, "Carte levee par la Societe des Jesuites, dediee au Roi d'Espagne en 1757." The copy of the map and the accompanying notes are certified as accurate by the officer of the Mexican Government in charge of the archives. My information, therefore, upon the early history of this comparatively unknown domain, is accurate and reliable. As early as 1687...." City: State: Arizona, Circa: 1964
