Derringers with Brass Frames and Scarce Short Barrels -A) National Arms Co. Second Model Derringer This is one of the rarest matched pairs of derringers in existence. Only 200 National Arms. Co. Marlin Model 1917

Lot 3467: Marlin Model 1917 "Potato Digger" Machine Gun with Tripod, BATFE Registered Deactivated War Trophy (DEWAT)

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 26, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $7,500 - $12,000

Description: Marlin Model 1917 "Potato Digger" Machine Gun with Tripod, BATFE Registered Deactivated War Trophy (DEWAT) Originally developed as the Model 1895 by John M. Browning, the "Potato Digger" was an early development in gas-operated firearms, using a gas port near the muzzle of the barrel to power a spring loaded lever arm to cycle the action. This arm, which projects down and out from the weapon with significant force during the firing cycle, is the source of the weapon's nickname. Originally manufactured by Colt, the production of the arm was taken over by Marlin Rockwell, who received the rights, the tooling, and the standing military contracts to the Russian and Italian governments. Primarily used as a training weapon by American forces, the Marlin found additional use as aircraft and tank armament, in addition to being issued to National Guard units and the North Russia and Siberia Expedition Forces sent to intervene in the Russian Civil War. Measuring 42 inches in overall length, the Marlin is fitted with a blade front and a flip-up elevation adjustable rear sight, with a heavily ribbed barrel and a wooden pistol grip. The barrel and receiver are separately marked with the 2-line New Haven address and caliber markings (the archaic "CAL 30 MODEL 1906" on the receiver to distinguish from the earlier 30 Krag and 30-03 rounds), and "J.A.D." on the receiver. A green painted brass tripod is included, properly configured to not interfere with the action arm, with traverse swivel, gear-driven elevation adjustment and a swiveling gunner seat/kneerest. Manufacturer: Marlin Arms Corp. Model: 1917 BBL: 27 3/4 inch round Stock: Gauge: 30-06 Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 2111 Class: Class III Condition: Very fine as deactivated, with 80% of the bright original blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and scattered handling marks. A few dings are visible on the wood grips, a few light chips on the seat, and 75% of the original green paint finish on the tripod. The arm cycles freely, with the muzzle and breech both welded and a number of internal parts removed/disabled during the deactivation. NOTE: This item is classified by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives as an Unserviceable Machine Gun or Deactivated War Trophy (DEWAT) in accordance with the terms of the National Firearms Act (NFA). Before bidding on this item it is the sole responsibility and obligation of the bidder/Class 3 FFL holder to comply and understand with all the State and Federal transfer laws and restrictions that apply in their current place of residence.

Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer

Lot 1307: Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $1,000 - $2,000

Description: Documented One-of-a-Kind National Arms Co. Prototype Second Model Derringer This unique pistol is pictured on page 129 of THE DERINGER IN AMERICA VOLUME II by R.L. Wilson and L.D. Eberhart. The caption reads: " Prototype Second Model National. Serial no. 10, marked on the brass frame beneath rosewood grip. In an unfinished state, and believed employed to demonstrate the experimental lever blade ejector. The system works admirably but was never introduced to production. Collection of Bob Vanni, Bay State Arms. Co." The serial number in the caption must be an typographical error given that "11" is clearly stamped under the left grip panel, and the mill lines and other imperfections match the pistol pictured. It has a German silver half moon blade front sight, hammer groove rear sight, and no markings aside from the "11" on the frame and "X73" on the underside of the grips. The National Arms Company derringers were the predecessors of the Colt cartridge derringers produced after Colt purchased The National Arms Company in 1870. Manufacturer: National Arms Co Model: Derringer BBL: 2 1/2 inch round Stock: Gauge: 41 RF Finish: white Grips: rosewood Serial Number: 11 Class: Antique Condition: Good. This prototype has milling marks throughout with some brown patina forming in the recesses on the barrel and an aged patina on the frame which has some pitting on the back strap. The ill-fitting grips are fine with some edge and generally handling wear. The action is fine. Overall, an interesting link in the history of 19th century derringer cartridge pistols.

Nearly all of these carbines were issued to cavalry and dragoon regiments on the pre-Civil War frontier. A few Model 1855 Pistol-Carbines remained in service at the start of the Civil War. The Model 1855 Pistol-Carbine is one of only three handguns ever manufactured by the Springfield Armory. It is unusual to encounter a Pistol-Carbine with matching assembly numbers on the stock and pistol. Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1855 BBL: 12 Inch Stock: walnut Gauge: 58 percussion Finish: bright Grips: Serial Number: NSN Class: Antique Condition: Very fine. Description: World War I 1918 Production M.A.N. Model 08/15 Maxim Heavy Machine Gun with Bipod, BATFE Registered Deactivated War Trophy (DEWAT) Known today mostly for heavy trucks and diesel engines, Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nurnberg was a German military supplier in both World Wars, being a chief producer of the Panther Tank in the latter. Originally developed by Hiram Maxim in the 1880s, the Maxim Gun is credited as the first true automatic weapon, using the energy generated by firing the round to cycle the weapon. Predating the idea of the air-cooled quick-change barrel, Maxim dealt with the technical challenge of the massive heat generated by automatic fire by installing a water-filled jacket around the barrel, an innovation that would continue to be used for decades afterwards. Fitted with a blade front sight on the water jacket and a tangent rear sight on the top cover, which is also bears the model markings, manufacturer name and address, and the "1918" production date. The accessories are representative of the Imperial Maxim, with the recoil boosting muzzle device, water cooling jacket, crank-adjusted fire rate regulator on the left side of the frame, pistol grip mounted safety, detachable steel bipod and a solid hardwood buttstock. Manufacturer: M.A.N. Model: BBL: 28 1/2 inch round Stock: walnut Gauge: 8 mm Finish: blue Grips: Serial Number: 1512 Class: Class III Condition: Very good as deactivated, with over half of the arsenal blue finish, showing areas of brown patina and some scattered dings and dents. Nazi RPzB 54/1

Lot 1588: Nazi RPzB 54/1 "Panzerschreck" Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher with Blast Shield (Registered NFA Destructive Device)

by Rock Island Auction Company

April 25, 2015, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $3,500 - $5,500

Description: Nazi RPzB 54/1 "Panzerschreck" Anti-Tank Rocket Launcher with Blast Shield (Registered NFA Destructive Device) Introduced in 1941, the Raketenpanzerbuchse (Rocket Armor Rifle, RPzB) series of weapons was developed by taking the American M1 "Bazooka" launcher from examples captured on the African and Eastern Fronts and enlarging the tube to handle an 88mm HEAT (High Explosive Anti-Tank) rocket, giving Nazi infantry enough firepower to deal with just about any armor the Allies could roll out. The 54 and 54/1 variants introduced the distinctive steel blast shield, which removed the need for the operator to wear a protective gas mask. This particular example is finished in a drab green with the underside stenciled "SA" in the pattern of Finland's martial inspection mark, suggesting this piece was among the hardware supplied by Germany to the Finns to press on the Continuation War against the Soviets. Overall length is 160cm (63 inches) with wood and steel grip sections, 15 1/2 inches tall and 12 1/2 inches wide blast shield marked "12" with a 3 inch square glass viewport (onboard spare lens included), piezoelectric ignition system and wire guide around the breech. NOTE: This weapon is defined by the National Firearms Act as a Destructive Device. This is a fully transferable NFA Class III Firearm currently on a Form 4. This weapon can be transferred to a Class III dealer at no charge. Buyer pays all other transfer fees and stamps.
