EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE, (c1910 - 1996), UNTITLED, 1990, synthetic polymer paint on canvas

by Deutscher and Hackett

May 6, 2015, 7:00 PM AEST

South Yarra, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD80,000 - AUD100,000

Description: EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE, (c1910 - 1996), UNTITLED, 1990, synthetic polymer paint on canvas SIGNED: inscribed with catalogue number OG02 DIMENSIONS: 176.0 x 120.0 cm PROVENANCE: Delmore Gallery, Alice Springs (cat. OG02) Private collection, South America RELATED WORK: See Isaacs, J., Smith, T., Ryan, J., Holt, D., and Holt, J., Emily Kame Kngwarreye Paintings, Craftsman House, Sydney, 1998, p. 53, pl. 10, for a related example exhibiting close stylistic similarities; and Neale, M., Emily Kame Kngwarreye: Utopia, The Genius of Emily Kame Kngwarreye, National Museum of Australia, Canberra, 2008, p. 126, cat. D-14 ESSAY: In the 1990s, Emily Kngwarreye emerged as one of Australia's leading painters and her works became sought after on an unprecedented scale. Kngwarreye's mark making revealed a strength and sureness of hand that delivered an exuberance of gesture. Renowned for the expression of ceremony through her art, Kngwarreye painted the spiritual aspect of her life as it relates to country and Awelye or women's ceremonies. Her mark making and abstract references to ceremonial practice identifies the relationship between individual, country, ceremony and ancestors. Her paintings were constructed of various elements that, over time, were added to or eliminated from the surface of the canvas. These elements constitute the artist's lexicon and are used separately or in varying subterranean combinations, thus allowing her work to evolve and be constantly fresh. In Untitled, 1990 underlying, meandering lines structure the composition, and areas of dots applied on dots build up a rhythmic colour, suggesting the overlaying of leaves and flowers above a subterranean root system.

EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE, (c1910 - 1996), MY COUNTRY: ALALGURA, 1992, synthetic polymer paint on canvas

by Deutscher and Hackett

May 6, 2015, 7:00 PM AEST

South Yarra, Australia

Estimated Price: AUD50,000 - AUD70,000

Description: EMILY KAME KNGWARREYE, (c1910 - 1996), MY COUNTRY: ALALGURA, 1992, synthetic polymer paint on canvas SIGNED: inscribed verso: artist's name and Delmore Gallery, cat. 92A07 DIMENSIONS: 150.0 x 120.0 cm EXHIBITED: Chapman Gallery, Canberra PROVENANCE: Delmore Gallery, Alice Springs Chapman Gallery, Canberra Private collection, New South Wales This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Delmore Gallery, Alice Springs which states in part: ' Emily has spent most of her life at [her place, "Alalgura"] and knows it intimately, in good season and in bad. It is essentially the power of the red bare soil, with its countless seeds of energy hidden, lying in wait for rain, that when recognised, binds one forever to the country by the marvel of such dramatic transformation and abundance that follows. To witness that abundance that carpets the earth, gives a basis for understanding the reverence and enthusiastic anticipation of the woman's ceremonial activities called "Awelye". They celebrate the hardiness and fertility of their bush tucker and food sources, and in turn, their own. Using an interesting palette and the smaller dot-work as evidenced in all of her earlier works, Emily displays her country in bold and brazen storms of colour. Each colour represents the raw, ripe and dry fruit, the bud the flower, the dry petals, the plant stem, the stalk, the scattered seeds - all parts of the life cycle. This is one of the several canvases completed when the rain was building up. Emily was unusually calm, and ceremonial activities were on hold. This work is in anticipation of the transition from barren to lush.'
