Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), Southern Landscape, 1926

Lot 26: Hermann Hesse (1877-1962), Southern Landscape, 1926

by Auctionata AG

March 25, 2015, 6:00 PM CET

Berlin, Germany

Estimated Price: €16,000 - €20,000

Description: Watercolor over pencil on wove paper Ticino, Switzerland, 1926 Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) - German poet, author and painter Dated with pencil along the right edge '12. Juni 1926' This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity by Regina Bucher, Fondazione Hermann Hesse, Montagnola, Museo Hermann Hesse, Montagnola, dated 14/1/2015 Dimensions: 25 x 33 cm Frame: 43.3 x 48.6 cm Good condition Picturesque landscape impression of Ticino, where Hermann Hesse used to live during the summer months since 1919; his watercolor landscapes of Ticino, painted in the 1920s, fetch up to €31,000 at international auctions The present work reveals the view from Arasio leading towards Magliaso on the opposite side of Lake Lugano. In the mid-1920s Hesse preferably omitted details in favor of a more sketchy style, but the offered composition interestingly documents the narrow beach line with the row of trees along the shore of the lake. The small barn at the lower right corner is also a quite authentic observation and turns out to be a typical Ticino barn with an open hay loft. Besides, the single tree on the left side is rated as another favorite motif of the artist, since he interpreted it as a (solitary) human being. Finally not only the composition corresponds to Hermann Hesse's artistic output of the mid-1920s, but also the technical realization, mainly characterized by a brief pencil or pen drawing, which was then colored with broad watercolor fields. Condition: The watercolor is in very good condition considering its age. The sheet is slightly browned and affected by faint pressure marks at the upper edge. Besides, there are two tiny pin holes at the height of the pencil signature at the upper right edge. The work is matted and measures 25 x 33 cm. The framed overall dimensions are 43.3 x 48.6 cm. Hermann Hesse (1877-1962) The German poet, author and painter Hermann Hesse achieved international prominence with his prosaic works 'Siddharta' (1922) and 'Steppenwolf' (1927). His poems are also very well-known and rendered him the Nobel Prize for Literature (1946), and the order Pour le mérite for science and art (1954). Several archives and institutes in Germany and Switzerland are entrusted with the administration of his estate. The Hermann-Hesse-Höri-Museum is located in Gaienhofen, Germany, and the Museo Hermann Hesse in Montagnola, Switzerland. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance. Auctionata charges the resale rights tax pursuant to Section 26 of the German Copyright Act (UrhG) towards the buyer in case of the sale of an original work of art or photography prior to 70 years having lapsed since the death of their creator. Therefore, Auctionata charges when purchasing a good - if a protection as an original work of art or photography is given - starting from a hammer price of EUR 400 an additional amount, which is calculated according to Section 26 (2) German Copyright Act (UrhG) and which does not exceed the amount of EUR 12,500.
