Estimated Price: $3,000 - $4,000

Description: Historic Americana1758-1801 (41) Volumes of "The Annual Register, OR A View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year..."(41) Volume Set of "The Annual Register, or a View of the History, Politics, and Literature for the Year...," Printed in London, England for J. Dodsley, a Fine Set.This original matched Set of 41 Volumes offers near complete coverage of the years from 1758 to 1801 in a set of Matching Bound Volumes, numbered from 1 to 43. There are only two missing yearly volumes: 1769 & 1786. Each volume measures 5" x 8" and ranges from 1.25" to nearly 2" thick. All of the volume covers are in excellent condition, and internally, they are nice, clean, and easy-to-read. Some have bookplates and prior owner notations on the frontis blanks and bookplates by previous owners. Mixed Editions: First through Eighth. A myriad subjects are covered in these volumes: antiquities, history of Europe, medical essays, letters, poetry, etc.Overall, an unfiltered look into the British mind before, during, and after both the French and Indian, plus the American Revolutionary War. Begun in 1758, The Annual Register is an annual survey of the past year (traditionally focusing on history, politics, State Papers [including addresses, speeches, and letters], science, and literature) from the British perspective. These volumes contain extensive and detailed information on the American Colonies. The American Revolution and the formation and early years of the United States are covered in great depth.Highlights include very early printings of both the Declaration of Independence in book form, the 1776 volume here is a fifth edition(1803?) and the Constitution, The 1787 volume is a second edition (1789). The various volumes also contain the Articles of Confederation, the Treaty of Paris, Washington's Farewell Address, and countless other significant documents and noted public addresses. There is also reporting on all major incidents and Battles including, The Boston Massacre and subsequent trial(1770), the Boston Tea Party(1774), Bunker Hill (1775), Lexington & Concord (1775), Ticonderoga (1775), Saratoga (1777), Washington crossing the Delaware (1777), etc. While the post-Revolutionary War volumes provide an in-depth look at the French Revolution, the rise of Napoleon, the British war against France, as well as the diplomatic problems faced by the young United States in dealing with the increasingly hostile French. A scarce and rarely encountered historic original Set.

What might seem to be abrupt changes in retrospect was actually a slow evolution constituted by the successive works. Every beginning, a new project is marked with great anticipation, excitement and fear. I always have to overcome the last before I can give vent to the rest. Conviction is of utmost importance in whatever subject my work is about, be it a tree, a colour, a thought, or an idea. I am searching for its truth, its essence. . ."- Caroline Dukes - Caroline Dukes was born in 1929 in Ujpest, Hungary and lived there during the German occupation band under the Stalin Era. She began her training in Budapest, studying sculpture with Sigiesmund de Strobl at the Academy of Fine Arts. Dukes immigrated to Canada in 1958 with her husband and children, first to Toronto and then nine years later to Winnipeg. In 1968 Dukes entered the School of Art at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1972.   Within two years she had established her own studio, taught classes, and had her first solo exhibition at the Fleet Gallery in Winnipeg. She also received the "Highest Quality and Most Original Painting" Award at the Manitoba Society of Artists exhibition that same year. By the early 1980s she was quite active in the regional art world, during which time her painting hand changed dramatically from stylized abstract-like interiors to highly expressive and monumental gestural reflections of the innate energy of the natural world. In 1991 The Winnipeg Art Gallery mounted a solo exhibition of her work titled At the Focus of Forces and in 1996 her installation Remember...Relate...Retell was hosted by Plug In ICA.Dukes exhibited her work in both solo and group exhibitions across Canada and abroad, including shows in Jerusalem, Munich and Barcelona. Her work is represented in major collections world-wide, including the Budapest Museum of Fine Art, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Canada Council Art Bank, Manitoba Arts Council Art Bank, and the Princess Anne Collection. In 1994, she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Dukes passed away in 2003, leaving  a remarkable body of work that dealt with memory, loss, tragedy, and the human spirit's amazing capacity to overcome. She was honoured posthumously with a 2008 solo retrospective, Concealed Memories, at the Winnipeg Art Gallery.Selected Corporate, Private and Public CollectionsAsper Jewish Community Centre, Winnipeg, ManitobaBudapest Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest, HungaryCanada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, ONCARA Operations Ltd, Mississauga, ONCKY-TV, Moffat Communications Ltd, Winnipeg, MBClaridge Collection, Montréal, QCComcheq Corporation, Winnipeg, MBEsso Resources CanadaGreat West Life Insurance Company, Winnipeg, MBGulf Canada Resources, Calgary, ABHewlett-PackardInter-City GasInvestors Group, Toronto, ONLoring Ward Investment Counsel Ltd.Manitoba Arts Council Visual Art Bank, Winnipeg, MBMusée des beaux-arts de Montréal, Montréal, QCNorman MacKenzie Art Gallery, Regina, SKNorth Dakota Museum of Art, Grand Forks, North DakotaPrincess Anne Collection, EnglandRobert McLaughlin Gallery, Oshawa, ONShell Canada, Calgary, ABSt John's College, Winnipeg, MBTaylor McCaffrey Chapman, Winnipeg, MBToronto-Dominion Bank, Toronto, ONUniversity of Winnipeg Art CollectionWinnipeg Art Gallery, Winnipeg, MBYad Vashem Art Museum, Jerusalem, IsraelSelected Solo Exhibitions2008Concealed Memories, Winnipeg Art Gallery, MB1998Cities, Gallery 1C03, University of Winnipeg, MB1996-92 Remember . . . by Swann Auction Galleries

May 7, 2015, 1:30 PM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $12,000 - $18,000

Description: ADOLPHE MOURON CASSANDRE (1901-1968) NEW STATENDAM / HOLLAND - AMERICA LINE. 1928. 40 1/4x30 1/2 inches, 102x77 1/2 cm. Nijgh & Van Dittmar, Rotterdam. Condition A: minor creases in margins and image. Launched in 1924, construction problems delayed the maiden voyage of the Statendam until April 11, 1929. Known as "the Queen of the Spotless Fleet," she served the Holland-America Line until 1940, when she was destroyed during World War II. To promote her first crossing, Cassandre developed this compelling close-up view of funnels and ventilation cowls, with waves of smoke billowing out overhead. Cassandre's love of sea travel found him "constantly renewing himself, constantly varying not only his point of view and angle but also his style" (Mouron p. 64). This poster not only represents another unique vantage point from which to view technology, but is "a prime example of Cassandre's attention to tonal values. The color scheme . . . brings a wonderfully sober equilibrium to the composition" (ibid. p.66). Mouron 104, Brown & Reinhold pl. 12, Cassandre / Weill p. 22, Cassandre / Suntory 69, Cassandre / Tokyo 28, Schipp & Affiche 53, Passenger Ships 73, Crouse p. 227.
