Toronto, ON, Canada

Estimated Price: CAD2,000 - CAD2,500

Description: JASON BROWN MOOSE SEASON IN THE GASPE, RIVIERE-AU-RENARD, QC, 2011 archival pigment print mounted to archival boardedition 1/5 41 ins x 50 ins; 104.1 cms x 127 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoNote:Jason Brown is a fine art photographer based in Toronto. His work explores storytelling and hints at narratives found in our built environments and the nominal subjects in our surroundings. Born in Elliot Lake, Ontario, Jason holds a Bachelor of Journalism degree with a concentration in History from Carleton University in Ottawa and he has studied photography at Ryerson University in Toronto. Moose Season in the Gaspé, Rivière-au-Renard, QC (2011) is from the series "You Seem To Be Where I Belong" - Brown's personal, ongoing, survey of contemporary Canada. Peering around unassuming corners and down quiet roads, this work presents an unexpected view on how our sometimes out-of-date and sometimes out-of-place occupation of the Canadian landscape connects and brings us together as a society. At its essence, this work is a reflection on the Canadian landscape and small town life, laying bare a country that is in one light authentic and charming, and in another troubled and enigmatic.-Courtesy of the artist

Stoeffler ends this work with a discussion of perspective and measurement. Many authors of the many books on mathematical instruments to be published in the sixteenth century followed Stoeffler's example. Johann Stoeffler (1452-1531) was professor of mathematics and astronomy at Tübingen, and was the teacher of Phillip Melanchthon and Sebastian Münster. "Invited by Pope Leo X in June 1515 to take part in a project to reform the calendar, Stoeffler published Calendarium romanum magnum, printed by Jacob Koebel in 1518 in Oppenheim. This was later issued in German as Der newe gross Roemische Calendar (Oppenheim, Jacob Koebel, 1531). As a necessary preparation for this calendar reform, he published a number of ephemerides. Stoeffler maintained, as did Paul of Middenburg, that the spring equinox should not be a fixed date. Instead, using the meridian of Tübingen and the Alphonsine Tables, and following the practice of the Church fathers, he suggested a variable equinoctial date for which up-to-date ephemerides were indispensable" - Biographical Encyclopaedia of Astronomers (p. 1089-1090) "[Elucidatio]was first published in 1512/13 by his printer, Jacob Koebel and was an immediate success with astronomers, mathematicians, astrologers (speculators of the sky), surveyors, and other students of the good arts, and has been cited by virtually every author on the subject ever since. By 1619, Elucidatio had gone through sixteen editions, mostly in Latin, but also in French and German." - Classical Science Press. "... an independent literature of printed treatises on mathematical instruments was launched in 1513 by Johann Stoeffler with his Elucidatio fabricae ususque astrolabii. The formula of 'construction and use' was adopted for many of the accounts of particular mathematical instruments that were published through the century. Stoeffler first tells his readers how to make an astrolabe, then, in a series of worked examples, how to use it. The treatise presents itself not in the context of an overarching discipline but as an independent manual for a particular instrument." - Isis, Vol.102, No.4 on early mathematical instruments. by Doyle New York

April 15, 2015, 10:00 AM EST

New York, NY, USA

Estimated Price: $2,000 - $3,000

Description: BOSWELL, JAMES The life of Samuel Johnson, LL.D. comprehending an account of his studies and numerous works, in chronological order; a series of his epistolary correspondence and conversations with many eminent persons; and various original pieces of his composition, never before published. The whole exhibiting a view of literature and literary men in Great-Britain, for near half a century, during which he flourished. London: Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly, 1791. First edition, one of 1750 copies, second state, with the correct reading "give" on line 10 of page 135. Two volumes, early (and probably original) boards with blue paper covering, rebacked later in brown morocco, and with the supralibros of Robert Tyndall Hamilton Bruce blocked on the upper cover of each volume, and his monogram on the spines. 11 1/2 x 9 inches (29 x 23 cm); portrait, xii, [16] pp. contents and errata, 516 pp.; [2], 588 pp., with the "Round Robin" plate and the terminal plate of Johnson's handwriting. Boards rubbed and soiled, spines a trifle rubbed with some minor weakness at the head of the front board of the first volume, some slight foxing as usual, but an entirely uncut copy in what appear to be the boards of issue. As noted, the Bruce copy (his library, sold Edinburgh, 1900), with the later bookplate of Winston Henry Hagen. A pleasing copy of the first and greatest of English biographies, perhaps the earliest with a modern sensibility. It is as telling an account of the inner life of Boswell as it is of Johnson, its ostensible subject. The book is quite rare uncut. Pottle 79; Grolier English 65; Rothschild 463; Tinker 338. C

Selznick's attention], six paragraphs outlining Mitchell's concerns and frustrations due to her sudden fame and to her selling of the movie rights, paragraph three reads in part "Life has been awful since I sold the movie rights! / I am deluged with letters demanding that I do not put Clark Gable in as / Rhett. Strangers telephone me or grab me on the street, insisting that / Kathaine Hepburn will never do," Mitchell also mentions wanting to meet George Cukor and wanting to set him up with Wilbur Kurtz in Atlanta -- overall, an interesting early letter before production got off the ground. And who didn't want Gable to play "Rhett?" 11" x 8 1/2"

Artist: Mort Kunstler Title: "Benjamin Franklin" Medium: Print on acid free canvas textured paper Image Size: 13"x10.5" Edition: Framed and matted calendar printing Framing: In high quality mahogany frame, with blue matte Overall Size: 18"x16"Condition: Excellent condition Benjamin Franklin (January 17, 1706 [O.S. January 6, 1706] - April 17, 1790) was one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America. A noted polymath, Franklin was a leading author and printer, satirist, political theorist, politician, scientist, inventor, civic activist, statesman and diplomat. As a scientist he was a major figure in the Enlightenment and the history of physics for his discoveries and theories regarding electricity. He invented the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove, a carriage odometer, and a musical instrument. He formed both the first public lending library in America and first fire department in Pennsylvania. He was an early proponent of colonial unity and as a political writer and activist he, more than anyone, invented the idea of an American nation[1] and as a diplomat during the American Revolution, he secured the French alliance that helped to make independence possible. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Franklin learned printing from his older brother and became a newspaper editor, printer, and merchant in Philadelphia, becoming very wealthy, writing and publishing Poor Richard's Almanack and the Pennsylvania Gazette. Franklin was interested in science and technology, and gained international renown for his famous experiments. He played a major role in establishing the University of Pennsylvania and Franklin & Marshall College and was elected the first president of the American Philosophical Society. Franklin became a national hero in America when he spearheaded the effort to have Parliament repeal the unpopular Stamp Act. An accomplished diplomat, he was widely admired among the French as American minister to Paris and was a major figure in the development of positive Franco-American relations. From 1775 to 1776, Franklin was Postmaster General under the Continental Congress and from 1785 to 1788 was President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania. Toward the end of his life, he became one of the most prominent abolitionists. Franklin's colorful life and legacy of scientific and political achievement, and status as one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, has seen Franklin honored on coinage and money; warships; the names of many towns, counties, educational institutions, namesakes, and companies; and more than two centuries after his death, countless cultural references.
