1930-40's Vincent Zito Caricature of Gracie Allen Signed by Allen JSA Y31549

Lot 194: 1930-40's Vincent Zito Caricature of Gracie Allen Signed by Allen JSA Y31549

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: This caricature comes with a full letter from JSA. Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Vincenzo Maria Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. Grace Ethel Cecile Rosalie "Gracie" Allen (July 26, 1895 - August 27, 1964), was an American comedienne who became internationally famous as the zany partner and comic foil of husband George Burns. For contributions to the television industry, Gracie Allen was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6672 Hollywood Boulevard. Burns and Allen frequently used running gags as publicity stunts. During 1932-33 they pulled off one of the most successful in the business: a year-long search for Allen's supposedly missing brother. They would make unannounced cameo appearances on other shows, asking if anyone had seen Allen's brother. Gracie Allen's real-life brother was apparently the only person who didn't find the gag funny, and he eventually asked them to stop. (He dropped out of sight for a few weeks, at the height of the publicity.) The inside cover of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THIS COVER IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

Vintage 1920's or 1930's Era Vincent Zito Caricature of JEAN HARLOW D. 1937

Lot 220: Vintage 1920's or 1930's Era Vincent Zito Caricature of JEAN HARLOW D. 1937

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Vincenzo Maria Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. Jean Harlow (born Harlean Harlow Carpenter; March 3, 1911 - June 7, 1937) was an American film actress and sex symbol of the 1930s. After being signed by director Howard Hughes, Harlow's first major appearance was in Hell's Angels (1930), followed by a series of critically unsuccessful films, before signing with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1932. Harlow became a leading lady for MGM, starring in a string of hit films including Red Dust (1932), Dinner at Eight (1933), Reckless (1935) and Suzy (1936). Among her frequent co-stars were William Powell, Spencer Tracy and, in six films, Clark Gable. Harlow's popularity rivaled and soon surpassed that of her MGM colleagues Joan Crawford and Norma Shearer. She had become one of the biggest movie stars in the world by the late 1930s, often nicknamed the "Blond Bombshell" and the "Platinum Blonde", and popular for her "Laughing Vamp" movie persona. She died during the filming of Saratoga in 1937 at the age of 26. The film was completed using doubles and released a little over a month after Harlow's death. The American Film Institute ranked her as the 22nd greatest female star in Hollywood history. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

This autograph is guaranteed to pass authentication or your money back. George Albert Jessel (April 3, 1898 - May 23, 1981), sometimes called "Georgie" Jessel, was an American illustrated song "model," actor, singer, songwriter, and Academy Award-winning movie producer. He was famous in his lifetime as a multitalented comedicentertainer, achieving a level of recognition that transcended his limited roles in movies. He was widely known by his nickname, the "Toastmaster General of the United States," for his frequent role as the master of ceremonies at political and entertainment gatherings. Jessel originated the title role in the stage production of The Jazz Singer. Jessel was included as one of the "witnesses" interviewed in the 1981 film Reds (film) by Warren Beatty. To gain perspective on the lives of jack Reed and Louise Bryant, the two protagonists of the movie, Beatty began filming the "witnesses" as early as 1971. Jessel famously confused the name of Emma Goldman, referring to her first as "Emma Goldberg" and then "Emma Goldfarb" before correcting himself. Jessel died of a heart attack in 1981 at the age of 83 at the University of California at Los Angeles Medical Center. He was interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

1920-30's Vincent Zito Caricature of Harry Richman Autographed by Richman

Lot 214: 1920-30's Vincent Zito Caricature of Harry Richman Autographed by Richman

by Piedmont

May 2, 2015, 11:00 AM EST

Philadelphia, PA, USA

Description: Zito (1900-1966) was a talented artist most famous for his caricatures of the celebrities he encountered throughout his life in both Europe and America, primarily working in Paris and Palm Beach. Original sketchbook used by famed caricaturist Zito during the 1930s and 40s while in Paris, measuring approximately 8 x 10.5, containing over 80 caricatures of celebrities and notables, many of them signed by the subject. This autograph is guaranteed to pass authentication or your money back. Harry Richman was an American entertainer. He was a singer, actor, dancer, comedian, pianist, songwriter, bandleader, and night clubperformer, at his most popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Richman was born as Harold Reichman in Cincinnati, Ohio to Russian Jewish parents. He changed his name to "Harry Richman" at age 18, by which time he was already a professional entertainer in vaudeville. He worked as a piano accompanist to such stars as Mae West and Nora Bayes. With Bayes' act he made his Broadway debut in 1922. He appeared in several editions of the George White's Scandals in the 1920s to acclaim. He appeared in the 1931 Ziegfeld Follies. He made his feature movie debut in Hollywood in 1930 with the film Puttin' on the Ritz, featuring the Irving Berlin song of the same title, which gave Richman a phonograph record hit that year. His film career was short lived due to his somewhat overpowering personality, and his limited acting skills. (Leonard Maltin wrote of Puttin' on the Ritz: "A songwriter drinks and goes blind - after seeing this you'll want to do the same".) This made little difference to his career as he remained a popular nightclub host and stage performer. Harry Richman died in Hollywood, California. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

This autograph is guaranteed to pass authentication or your money back. Harry Rosenthal (15 May c. 1893 - 10 May 1953) was an orchestra leader, composer, pianist and actor. Rosenthal was born in Belfast in 1893, and by the 1920s he was in London where he had a thriving musical career as a composer, bandleader and pianist, including composing five operettas which met with great success. He came to the United States by 1929, when he wrote songs for Herbert Stothart's musical Polly on Broadway, and in 1930 acted inRing Lardner and George S. Kaufman's play June Moon, which was revived in 1933. After he met Edward, the Prince of Wales at a reception, he accompanied the heir to the British throne on a world tour. Rosenthal's film career began in 1931 and ended in 1948, during which time he worked on 19 films, playing pianists, orchestra leaders and also non-musical roles, as well as composing music (for The Sin of Harold Diddlebock) and conducting (on For Me and My Gal). In the early 1940s, Rosenthal was part of writer-director Preston Sturges' unofficial"stock company" of character actors, appearing in all of Sturges' films from The Great McGinty (1940) through The Sin of Harold Diddlebock (1947) with the exception of Hail the Conquering Hero. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.

Paul Whiteman (March 28, 1890 - December 29, 1967) was an American bandleader, composer, orchestral director and violinist. Leader of one of the most popular dance bands in the United States during the 1920s, Whiteman produced recordings that were immensely successful, and press notices often referred to him as the "King of Jazz". Using a large ensemble and exploring many styles of music, Whiteman is perhaps best known for his blending of symphonic music and jazz, as typified by his 1924 commissioning and debut of George Gershwin's jazz-influenced "Rhapsody in Blue". Whiteman's place in the history of early jazz is somewhat controversial. Detractors suggest that Whiteman's ornately-orchestrated music was jazz in name only (lacking the genre's improvisational and emotional depth), and co-opted the innovations of black musicians. Defenders note that Whiteman's fondness for jazz was genuine (he worked with black musicians as much as was feasible during an era of racial segregation), that his bands included many of the era's most esteemed white jazz musicians, and argue that Whiteman's groups handled jazz admirably as part of a larger repertoire. The inside cover, and other pages, of the sketch book which contains Zito's information has been imaged to this listing. HOWEVER, THESE PAGES ARE NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING WITH THE CARICATURE.
