by Rock Island Auction Company

December 5, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $2,500 - $3,750

Description: Cased Adams Small Arms Company Model 1872 Double Action Revolver with Scarce Short Barrel According to the included documentation, this commercial revolver, which is very similar to the Government Pattern Mk. III, is the shortest barreled variant known to date. It was previously in the James F. Hallam Collection (Vice President of the Historical Breechloading Small Arms Association among other British firearms organization positions). The martial version of this revolver was the first official center fire revolver adopted by the British War Department. The top of the top strap is marked "ADAMS'S PATENT SMALL ARMS Co" with "391 STRAND LONDON" on the top flat of the short 3 1/2 inch barrel. The serial number "8236" is marked on the cylinder pin, cylinder face, hammer slot, right side of the frame after the "ADAMS'S PATENT No" marking, trigger, and top of the grip. It also has the John Adams monogram trademark on the lower right side of the frame and various British proofs. It is equipped with blade front and notch rear sights, an ejector with serrated round knob, a lanyard loop stud on the butt, and a once piece checkered walnut grip. It comes in a fitted oak case with green felt lined interior and an Adams Patent Small Arms Company label with instructions adhered to the inside of the lid. Manufacturer: Adams Model: Adams Patent Revolver BBL: 3 1/2 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 450 Finish: blue Grips: walnut Serial Number: 8236 Class: Antique Condition: Fine. The revolver retains 50% plus of the original blue finish with a mottled brown patina on the balance. The hammer is mostly bright. There are patches of oxidation, some minor edge wear, and scattered minor marks and scratches. The grip is also fine with mostly crisp checkering, a few minor dings, and some superficial scratches. Mechanically fine with most markings clear. The case is very good with numerous minor scratches along with some repairs and residue on the exterior and some stains and minor tears on the interior. The interior label is fine. Overall, a fine example of an important revolver in British firearms history.

Maynard Sporting Rifle Fitted with Unique Earlier Production Buttstock Inlaid Compass Inscribed Presented to Edward Stabler By the Maynard Arms Co. May 1, 1859

Lot 1240: Maynard Sporting Rifle Fitted with Unique Earlier Production Buttstock Inlaid Compass Inscribed Presented to Edward Stabler By the Maynard Arms Co. May 1, 1859

by Rock Island Auction Company

December 6, 2014, 9:00 AM CST

Rock Island, IL, USA

Estimated Price: $7,500 - $15,000

Description: Maynard Sporting Rifle Fitted with Unique Earlier Production Buttstock Inlaid Compass Inscribed Presented to Edward Stabler By the Maynard Arms Co. May 1, 1859 This unique Maynard rifle has a buttstock from a First Model Carbine made c. 1859 with a brass compass inlaid on the left side that has detailed scroll engraving and is marked "Presented/to/Edward Stabler/by the Maynard Arms Co./May 1st/1859". The consignor has included a research file with information on Maynard firearms, message exchanges concerning this rifles, and a brief biography of Edward Stabler. The biography explains that Stabler was imprisoned during the War of 1812 for refusing to serve in the militia due to his pacifist views and was then released when his mother wrote to her childhood friend, then First Lady, Dolley Madison. The document also notes that Stabler was innovative and invented several devices, formed the Mutual Fire Insurance Company, worked as the Sandy Spring postmaster for 53 years, and took to seal making. Seals designed or made by Stabler were used by both houses of Congress, the Treasury, Post Office, Supreme Court, and others. This brief biography oddly leaves out several significant designs of Stabler's including the "Stabler cut off" used on post war altered Spencer carbines and what is arguably Stabler's most important design: the Seal of the President of the United States which he designed based on crude instructions from President Millard Fillmore. Stabler's design has been changed slightly over the years to accommodate for the number of states and thus stars in the design. Under the cap, it has a white and black compass marked "HUNTER'S PATENT". The stock also has the First Model buttplate with a patch box marked "MAYNARD PATENTEE/SEP 22 1845/MAY 27 1851/JUNE 17 1856". The left side of the frame is marked with faint three-line patent information followed by "1873". The action is clearly one of the sporting models developed in the post war years that was at some point fitted with the stock of an older rifle. It has a part round, part octagon barrel equipped with a blade front sight followed by a band with a "hood" the sight and "hood" have grooves that allow for the attachment of the two-piece scope shade stored in the patch box. The barrel also has a notch rear sight with two folding leaves marked "2" and "4" similar to those used on Second Model carbines, and it has an adjustable tang mounted peep sight of the type used on the First Model Carbines. It also has a smooth Schnabel end forearm. Manufacturer: Massachusetts Arms Co Model: Maynard-Rifle BBL: 32 inch part octagon Stock: walnut Gauge: 40 Maynard Finish: blue/casehardened Grips: Serial Number: 12100 Class: Antique Condition: Fine as assembled. The barrel retains 60% of the original blue finish mixed with a brown patina. The other components retains 40% of the faded case colors with a brown patina on the balance. The compass has an aged patina. The wood is very good with some slight cracks at the tip of the forearm and in the finish on the right side of the butt and otherwise only light scratches and handling marks. The action is excellent. The compass is non-functional, and the front sight pieces have one broken lens. This is a unique piece connected to the designer of the Seal of the President of the United States!

Lot 63: Camille Souter HRHA (b.1929) Basking Sharks, Achill

by Morgan O'Driscoll

December 8, 2014, 6:00 PM GMT

Ballsbridge, Ireland

Estimated Price: €10,000 - €15,000

Description: Camille Souter HRHA (b.1929) Basking Sharks, Achill oil on board signed lower right & dated 1959 h:58  w:38.50 cm. Provenance: James Adam's, Dublin in the 1970's Private Collection, Dublin By Descent In early 1959 Camille Souter returned to Ireland from Italy and spent the next few years living and painting on Achill Island. Although primarily associated with abstract expressionism most of Camille Souter's work retains a figurative element. At times Souter's work appears to be at the point where abstract imagery becomes sufficiently recognisable for us to characterise it as representational. The work she produced during this period in Achill is highly successful and the series is extremely important within the Artist's oeuvre. The subject painting is surely one of the strongest of the Achill series and unusually for her paintings from this period incorporates beautiful pools of color reflecting off the beached sharks stretched skin as the water moves in on the strand. Camille Souter is an Honorary member of the RHA and a member of Aosdána. She was elected Saoi of Aosdána in a ceremony presided in 2009, where she was presented with the symbol of the office of Saoi, the gold Torc. Souter continues to live and work on Achill Island.
